This thing has the largest blooms of any thing I have ever seen. They have to be a foot in diameter. Really getting ready to put on a show.
Bulls Eye
to cool Jim
Wow ... is that one of the Luna ones?
Any chance this is a Ruby Red Dot........ ? I hope so because that's really awesome and I hope mine will end up looking so good......
What is the story on the "Luna" variety WaterlooLily ....... Are they just a different variety ....?
Wow Jim, a foot across?? That one is a beauty!
Thanks everyone. I only know it as Bulls Eye. I did a search on the Ruby Red Dot and it doesn't look the same. Might be something we can exchange seeds from if you are interested. I have grown some Hibiscus from seeds. This is the only one that I can not get a cutting to root from.
I also am not familar with Luna. Inquiring minds want to know.
I'm always interested in a swap...... I've bought several others for the first time this year......... My Kopper King just bloomed.... do you have one of those ..... ?
How long did it take from seed before you saw your first bloom........? and can you give more details on how you did your cuttings.... my first attempt at doing this looks like a lost cause..... Valarie
how long does the blooms last on hardys?
Linda
Linda ....
While each bloom only lasts one day, hardy hibiscus are prolific, sometimes producing more than a hundred blooms in a season. -
Taken from http://www.bachmans.com/retail/tipsheets/Perennials/HardyHibiscus.cfm
There will be so many blooms each day that you will swear the bloom from the previous day didn't die.
I just take a cutting about a foot long and leave about 3-4 leaves at the very top and place in water. All my others seem to root but this one just doesn't work for some reason. The ones I grew from seeds I sowed inside in the fall and then put them out in the spring and they all have bloomed that year.
I have Lord Baltimore, just started to bloom, a maroon that I grew from seeds and a pink that I don't know the name of. I also have 17 that I got in a coop that went bad here on Dave's. One of the ones was the Kopper King but I doubt that what it is. They are budding up ready to bloom so we shall see. I also have a yellow that has smaller blooms and grows into a taller plant. I have the name somewhere but can't remember off hand. Here's a picture of it. It grows taller and not as bushed as the other ones.
I also have several swamp mallow that I grew from seeds. Took about three years to see blooms on them.
The pink that I mentioned had so many blooms and buds last year the bottom limbs were laying on the ground. I'll see if I can find a picture. This is the only picture I can find of it and it shows many blooms. The plant itself had to be at least eight feet from end of branch to other end of branch. The more blooms that were on the plant the smaller the bloom
Here's a pic of my Kopper King bloom with the burgundy foliage behind it - I didn't get this in the coop - but did try to order one to go with it from the coop ...... the foliage is the give away.... if yours doesn't have the burgundy foliage then I'd say like the rest of us you didn't get a Kopper King in the coop .....
That's all good advice.... I didn't start my hibiscus seeds until Feb-March and most are still to little to put out..... I'm wondering what to do with them thru the winter.... (Zone 5 - I envy you your zone) I'm afraid if I put them out now they won't make it ..... I'm going to start much sooner with my seeds this time around - Let's get together and see if we have any we can swap ......
That is a beauty. I went and looked at the ones that have I received and most have burgundy in the leaves but not completly burgundy. A lot of burgundy veins in the leaves. I guess I will have to wait and see what I get.I do know it is hibiscus.
Sure would like to trade some seeds with you.
Wow, that pink one with all the blooms is just gorgeous, Jim! I just love the perennial hibiscus but I have run out of room for something so big.
And I love that Kopper King foliage, VS.
Jim,
Will you be offering rooted cuttings of any of these for the proposed hardy hibiscus swap http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/490229/ ?
Yes I will start cuttings tomorrow. Thanks for reminding me. My granddaughter has first dibs on the Lord Baltimore. I am also going to start some seeds and see how they do.
The 17 I got from Nadi all have buds except for two and one died. So I should have 14 in the next few days to see what they appear to be. Sure would like to be surprised. Wouldn't it be funny if she got mixed up and sent all of us some rare expensive hibiscus.
Dream on, Jim!! LOL
I'd be tickled if there were at least 5 different varieties in 12 or 13 plants of mine that lived. I cut all mine back about 6 weeks ago so they've been busy putting on new stalks, etc instead of blooming. Of course, now I see I shot myself in the foot...
What variety of seeds will you be starting?
They're wonderful, Jim. Good for you! (I'm going to get to post blooms someday....)
I know most of these aren't suppose to come true to their parents, but I'm trying them from seed anyway: Lord Baltimore, Fantasia http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/53974/ , Frisbee http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/32485/ , Plum Crazy and Kopper King.
I started a thread where we can post our wants and haves ~ http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/527592/ .
