Martagon lilies

North East England, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

I love these lilies but I'm particularly pleased with this specimen as I grew it from seed from my original plants.

Very cool, Galanthophile! Isn't it amazing what one tiny seed can do?

G--very beautiful martagons! I'm very impressed that you can grow them from seed, too! thanks for posting. t.

Gorgeous!

Haydenville, MA(Zone 5a)

Lovely! You Should be proud! How long did it take between planting and bloom?

North East England, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

About 3 years I think. I have lots more still in a seed tray so it just shows how much better they perform when planted out early.

Haydenville, MA(Zone 5a)

Ahh! Good to know...I have lots of little plants in trays/pots...am nervous about putting them out in the big bad garden....I guess I shouldn't be. Thanks for the inspiration!

This is my first year growing this beauty. I planted them last
year. Now they have grown to 3', but on three of what I think
are buds, there is a white coating?

Is this normal, or another foe to fight?

Thank you!

No Corinne - if the white coating looks like tiny little hairs this is perfectly normal. I'll have a look at mine to compare.

I am very impressed! Awesome coloration. A fine achievement

Galanthophile,

Thank you. I was very worried.

Three had the white hairs, but a younger bud did not.

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

A particularly nice color and dot arrangement. Congrats!

Chicago, IL

Very pretty. I planted a few Martagon last year. I only see one plant now, but you gave me hope.
Thank you for sharing.

This is how the buds look with those white hairs

Fabulous photos Ann!

Indeed they are!! Also very timely. My very first martagons are in exactly that state and I am so glad to see that the "hairs" are normal. Thanks for asking, Taramark, and thank you for the great photos, Galanthophile.

How tall are your martagans? After 3 years I finally have buds on my Terrace City (I am so exicited). But the silly thing can't be over 15 inches. Looks perfectly healthy otherwise and for all the previous years, while waiting, this is about all the taller it got each year. Are there midget Martagons? According to my records this lily should be 36 to 42". Maybe I have it in too much shade.

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

My Terrace City sulked last year and is barely 2 feet tall this year. Good thing I'm patient...

North East England, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Yes I find mine are only about 24 inches and they are quite mature. Some of the hybrids that have been crossed with martagons might reach 36 - 42".

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

My martagons grow taller each year. They often sulk for the first year, or come up a foot or so and then turn brown and thats it for that year.

When I have to move them, I do so with lots of soil, so they don't even know they have been moved. They do hate being moved.

Wow they are tall - just shows what they will do in various conditions!

Thank you, Galanthophile,

I did not get a very good picture of the buds on my
L. martagon, but they look more natural to me now that
I have seen your picture above.

What do you think?

That is something else. Spit bug?

Have never seen anything like it. Can I take your photo to send to the best living martagon chap, to see what he thinks it is?

Yes they look like good old healthy martagon lily buds to me! You are in for a treat. Let us know when they bloom!

(Zone 4a)

Sure.
