Does anyone use IrfanView for their pictures?

I don't have a digital camera yet. I can post pictures from my regular snapshots if I scan them and place them on IrfanView. However, the picture gets distorted and blurry. Does anyone know how to use it where this would not happen. Please explain it to me as you would a first grader. I am not too swift on this stuff....bye, Lisa
