Sweezel, me, Texasgarden and Vossner at lunch today. Nery was in town with her husband and met the three of us just outside of downtown Dallas. We were just a tad bit late back to our offices. I had a great time, girls, and think that next time we should take the afternoon off. :-)
Long Lunch
Neat! Nice to see you all! (Hope to do it some day in person!)
Looks like you had a ball girls - where was that you lunched?
All of you look really nice, this gave us am opportunity to meet Vossner, it is nice to put names and faces together.
Oh, just found this. That was Cafe Express we met at. It was a nice long lunch and I enjoyed chatting with everyone and meeting Nery! :)
Wow it is so nice that so many people manage to get together to meet face to face...I'm jealous...
It will be your turn soon, in Austin! I'm going to the Dallas plant swap in September, hope to meet these gals there. Want to come along?
Can't wait to meet you, Maggie!
Great to see all of you having a wonderful time via photo. I noted the plants on the table ... it seems gardeners always have a few to bring along with them. :o) Thanks for sharing your visit with us.
Yep, Nery was nice enough to surprise us with those!
Terri, I think we were following each other around on the forums last night! :-)
Hazel, I noticed the plants, too. There's always a cutting or plants or something on a gardener's table, even when it isn't their own table! lol
Is it hot out there or what! I just came in for a little breather and a glass of ice water. Yes, Maggie, I noticed you were following me around last night. :-)
Yep, blazing hot. I came in for some water too. When the lantanas you watered the day before are wilting, you better be careful outside. A couple of years ago, I didn't listen to the weather forecast. I worked and worked outside and wondered why I was feeling as though I had caught a flu bug ... like I was moving in slow motion. I decided to wash my big old dog (a Great Pyrenees with lots of hair). I wondered why he dried in just a few minutes. It was 113 degrees outside. Needless to say, we both went inside to enjoy the airconditioning.
Oh, yeah. Listen to your body in this heat. :-)
Maggiemoo, you mentioned a Dallas plant swap in September. I sure would like to attend. Will you send me info, please. neptara@charter.net
Adeline
Adeline, you've got mail.

Maggie
here's pix taken w/ my camera. We had a great time. After lunch I made a bee-line to North Haven (who was I kidding about being too tired to go???) and got me some goodies. A different kind of croton, a mini begonia for my terrarium, leopard ligularia. Also went to Tuesday Morning and got me gardening doo-dads, (which I don't need) at 50%.
Saturday I went to Lowes in West Plano and got one mini AV for 25 cents and a regular no name AV for $1. Then went to Cristina's right across the street. They were having a 50% off everything. Bought white geraniums for $1.50, some chemicals, and the nice cashier just gave me a lucky bamboo for free. I must have had that glazed look that plant nuts get when they're on to bargains. Must have scared him, LOL.
Terrie, I saw some Kaempferia ginger at North Haven. I was reading up on them and they are dubbed the hosta alternative for the south. I should concentrate on those instead of getting my heart broken w/ hostas...
Oh, my, Nery! You definitely did some power shopping. lol Glad you found Cristina's. That's one of my favorite places since it is so close to my house. They don't have a huge selection but great for flats of color and hanging baskets. I buy my ferns from them because they are always so healthy. Thanks for the ginger/Northhavens tip. I'll go by there sometime this week.
Come see us again, soon!
wow. I can fool myself into thinking that is hosta Francee and make myself happy. One of my neighbors has 4-5 varieties and it really looks good as a ground cover.
Yes, I planted mine in the ground last year. It really was pretty as a groundcover, and I'm hoping it has spread a little this year.
Maggie,
I saw your picture in another thread is the reason I've been looking for it. :-)
Wow, I don't remember where I posted it! That's neat!
Kaempferia gilbertii? What is this plant? It is wondeful! OK...I am hitting hwy75 to Northhaven first thing Saturday morning ...on the way to beauty shop...LOL...Why do you guys have a problem with Hostas? I never lost one even in this texas heat. I even ordered some from MB. buyone/get one free...6 for 7.95! Now ...I dont trust MB ..had some bad expierences. I put one bag of three in each pot and planted Moss roses in top thinking they were going to take a while to come up...if they did come up. Lo and Behold..after one week ...they are shooting up in those pots and the Moss Roses are dying! Now I am thinking I should have separated them completely:). ... btw all my Hostas are in pots the slugs are just too bad around here. ...even with that illegal stuff I ordered from Canada. LOL
Sylvia
Sylvia,
Have you tried Sluggo? Until I started using it a couple of years ago, I could not get rid of the slugs. I like it, too, because it will not harm my pet.
Trunnels...I dont remember Sluggo...but I will try it next year...when they comeback. Some of my slugs are almost six inches long. I saw one crossing the street one day! lol
Maggie tell me about the Plant Swap. I could root some of this Stonecrop to trade...and I got Ajuga...Obediant plant...Lambs ear...I would like to dig up these Dahlias...I dont have time for staking!
Physostegia...and maybe Acanthus...I got to move it...its too big for where it is. Oh yes Cannas!
Sylvia
Sylvia, here is the thread for the Plant Swap: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/504380/
At any time you can look at the very first thread in the Texas Gardening forum (it's "stickied" to stay in place at the top). There is a running list, by date, of events like the Nursery Dates, Plant Swaps, and RoundUps in TX, each with a link to the thread for that event.
oh so that's what sticky means!
Yes, I am just now seeing this! :)
Had a great time seeing Nery again. If anyone else is ever in Dallas please let me know! I love to meet other DGers.
BTW Terrie- I second that about Sluggo! Works very well for me too.
I just have to show you guys the hosta "Stripetease" I received from Bentlys today...look at this rootball ... this plant is huge..it is absolutley gorgeous! I have to retake the pic of the plant after I potted it ... I am trying to learn how to do macro shots and it didnt come out very well. lol
This man sends the actual plant...no bare roots from him!

Oh my vossner..what a beautiful succulent. I want to know its name too.
btw ladies I stopped by Northhaven yesterday looking for the KG plant ...thats all I could remember... the initials ...they had no idea what I was talking about....then I made the mistake of looking for it. Oh boy when will I learn I cant go looking without buying.
Sylvia
sylvia i am trying to root cuttings. if I remember well you're coming for the houston nursery date. I will gladly share one w/you then. I wonder that KG is. did you enjoy Northaven?
Gee thanks Vossner ... I will remind you. :) didnt have time to enjoy Northhaven...was running late for my Beauty appointment ... I am a blond now. lol
Sylvia
Wow, that is a nice hosta from Ed!
Thanks for sharing your picture, Nery. It looks geat in that pot!
Ok guys, I just bought Kaempferia pulchra "Silver Spot" at North Haven today. So should I overwinter it or does it just go dormant and come back on its own like hosta? My pond is finally sealed and has a pump and filter so I went a little nuts with plants today. I had to get myself some shade stuff and they had lots of this "ginger" in that area. :)
Texasgarden what area did you find it in? I didnt see it! anyway A GOOD FRIEND is supposed to bring me a piece at the Houston meet....I will just wait for it.;)
Did you see those Heliaborus for just 9.95?
SYLVIA
Syliva-
When you very first walk into the outside part, they have a bunch of tropicals and stuff to the right- I also got myself a Persian Shield so if you saw those, that's where these were too. I did see the Hellabores, but I already have a few that haven't bloomed yet. That "takes us years to bloom" aspect of that plant makes it loose appeal with me. But I won't say that too loud in case the ones I have outside hear me and refuse to bloom... EVER. Ha!
