Gardening with Texas Native plants & Wildflowers. Part 6

Kerrville, TX

Oh maggie I hope it isn't anything too serious...I am on the well with 5 other families so I have to be conservative...I am worried my plants are going to suffer...I am watering very little...I think this first season is a good reminder for people in my situation on the value of natives...

I do have a rainbarrel but most of the water in my rainbarrel is all used up...lol...it's a big one but I love watering...not the answer to a long dry summer but an extra 1700 gallons between rains...and trust me when I tell you that 1700 gallons isn't all that much...

This is the place to be for Texas natives - Hae you read the old threads yet? They are great reading - went theough them and now I have a list of natives I want a mile long! LOL You should come up tp the plant swap in Arlington this Sep. Josephine will be there and she always is full of natives! A really wonderful lady anyone would grow from just meeting her.

Kerrville, TX

Yes I have been reading them...I am going to try and go to some of the gatherings just to get acquainted but not to swap...I actually just moved in to an empty space so at the point I don't have much to trade...The Nov gathering is close to me so I will for sure make that one but again just to meet people...maybe b next year I can swap.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Hotnspicy, you dont have to have anything to swap, in order to come to the swap, I will swap you all the plants you want, for a smile and a hug, and may be some day we can come and see them at your place. Let me know what you like and I will see what I can do.
That rain barrel is more like a tank, I think it is great theat you are conserving water, that is of course, when there is some to conserve.
Josephine.

Morning Josephine! I am going to try today to get the plants out of the field - cross a finger for me! I can hear the mowers on the back part fo the field already so got to try to work fast Mitch

Meadows Place, TX(Zone 9a)

Just for fun, is this what happens when you garden too much ?????

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Mitch, take a bucket of water with you and drench them first, so you can get as many roots as possible. Good luck, may the native plant rescue fairie be with you.
Josephine.

Kerrville, TX

Thank you Josephine, I know that the gardeners here including you are very generous...Two people have already shared plants with me ..one of Dave's members came by to visit and brought me several plants...

Claiming it - need all the help I can get.. trying to wait until they take a lunch - dont want to be in the way and then kicked out!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Kipper2, that is a pretty funny cartoon, I know my plants love me, and I love them too.
Josephine.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I am so jealous, Mel and her husband got to see Trois' private jungle.
Those were very nice pictures, thank you Trois.
Josephine.

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

You are welcome.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

I am too! But I think I'm more jealous of that cruise they are going on! lol But Mel has given me permission to go to her garden and dig up a few babies while she is gone. She won't miss any of those other goodies I sneak out with either. ;) lol

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Dont forget to share and then we will not tell.... little pay offs...

Did this live is full sun? What are you looking for in exchange?

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Trois,

Re: the hibiscus-like flower. It's not in any of my wildflower books nor is it in A & M's DFT's website. Is this the first time you have seen it? Is it an annual, perennial or a shrub? Could it be an escaped ornamental?

You could write to the Plantanswer man, Dr. Jerry Parsons. Using their e-mail system, you can't send any photos, but when you respond to the email he sends you, you can send photos. There is a limit to the size of the e-mail accepted by TAMU. You may have to send several packets of mail. He will need photos of the entire bush, close-up of the leaves and flowers, seedheads if any.

75154, It is sitting on my covered, back patio which faces due west with sun from @ 4:00pm on. Don't need anything (I know, it sounds strange) just email me your address and I'll toss some in an envelope.

Meadows Place, TX(Zone 9a)

YEEE HAWWWW. Just got 7/8 of an inch of that wet stuff which falls frome the sky. If I remember well, we used to call it RAIN. It came down in about 1 hour so it soaked in purdy good.

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

Thanks, bettydee. This is the first time I have seen this plant. Every year a surprise. None of our near neighbors have seen anything like it. I suspect a bird might have helped.

We got a few drops od something wet. It always does this when when I am trying to fill my water pump gas tank. Anyway, the pond is full. About 300,000 gallons topped it off. 15 gallons of gas.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks for the thoughts everyone. It just seems like i've been losing something every day recently, and maybe even a tree. I'll start a thread, don't want to stray from the natives here.

Ruthie, now THAT'S what I call a rain barrell! How did you have the foresight to install that? (Was it built onsite? (Looks a lot like a cistern.)

Kip, Congratulations on the rain! (Trying not to be jealous here.) It wasn't even overcast here, but the temps seemed a little cooler today. Are all those seeds from the one columbine? Woa!

trois, How large was that hibiscus-looking flower? I was going through some of last years' photos and found a flower that looks similar to it. This is still in the pot from the nursery, a year later! It's leggy as a result, needs to be in the ground or a real container, and needs more sun I suspect.

Those are very beautiful flowers. The leaves look similar to mine. I will take some more pics tomorrow, with a scale. The flowers are fairly small, smaller than a Rose of Sharon.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't know how big those are, but these are probably 1 1/2, 2" tops.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Mary, the stamen on your flowers are dark. Those in Trois photo are cream colored. The stems in his photo are very hairy. It will be interesting to see if his is a perennial.

Does anyone know anything about the Baby-White Aster(chaetopappa ercoides) or more importantly where plants are seeds can be bought?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

James, I had never heard of it, but I looked it up on google and it is very pretty.
I do have Heath Aster, ( Aster ericoides ) a Texas native, which is white and has very tiny flowers, but blooms so heavily that it seems to be covered with snow.

Linda,( Sugarfoot ) came to visit Sunday. Here we are in front of the slope.

(Zone 8b)

Is that a Texas Star Hibiscus in her hand? Mine is 8ft tall!! Is that normal?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, Mine don't normally get to 8feet, may be six, but I have read that they can get quite tall. Is yours close to water?
Mine are on the slope and don't get a lot of water, plus they are in full sun.
Josephine.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Mitch, did you get to recue those plants in the field?
Tell us how it all went.
Josepine.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Josephine, is your Frostweed blooming yet? I was at my brother's pool again today and immediately noticed that mystery plant is blooming, and is definitely a frostweed. Didn't have the camera tho.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

One of mine is beginning to bloom but most of them are a long way from blooming, I think because I have quite a bit of shade. I will try to put up a picture when they are in bloom.
Josephine.

Kerrville, TX

Haha I am always whining about not having any plants but one thing I do have is lots and lots of frostweek well that and the white wild petunia...Mine is not in bloom either but I am anxious to see it...I have tons of it on the property...

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Lucky you, around here it is rather rare. I love it, and I am trying to get everybody supplied.
Send us a picture when it blooms.

Dallas, TX

Hey you guys ... thanks for the 101 on Texas native plants! I cant believe all the plants that i love are Texas natives...verbena ... phlox...did someone say Scabs? FROST your phlox is the prettist things I ever seen. I have ordered them twice one from SH and one from Brecks. I got these long skinny roots that I didnt know whether to lay them sideways or straight up. Anyway I havent seen them come up yet.:( I went out to Mikes on 183 and bought two little 4" pots and they are coming up nicely. I bought some Guara from HD..they bloomed nicely for a while and I thought they had died on me but I saw last week they are coming back and getting ready to bloom again. I wish I had a place to grow wildflowers...I love them so. Mitch I sure hate I missed you that morning...I would have loved for you to see what I got going in my little 800 sq ft court yard.:) Cant wait for the July 23rd meet:)
Sylvia

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Sylvia, I hope you will be able to come to the plant swap in September, I am going to try and root some cuttings of Phlox and you can get some then. I really love it too and the scent is beautiful.
Josephine.

Our area is just covered at the moment in this little jewel...anyone know what it is...

Ruthie, it's called either Texas Star or Meadow Pink, Sabatia campestris. I love these, but they quite blooming for us earlier this month. It's gone too dry.

It looks like your grass is going the same route as ours. I sure wish it would rain. I keep looking at the weather radar map and hoping a very small hurricane will come in our direction. A very samll one — no damage just rain.

Our Meadow Pinks have yellow centers. I think it's Texas Star.
