I really had to think about who "Bud" was.....roflol!!! But I got it! Like the picture of your bubbler.

Maya variegation field test - NE Illinois - Part II
WTG Blaine...Y'd already? Gee, Gosh...GANTASTIC! I gotta go out and tell mine to hurry up!!!
Carol
Here is my first log photo, Blaine. The largest one is Chas G, then Daybreak, Sun Kissed, Tropical Sunset and Maya with her marker. The easiest to root is Chas G, the most difficult was Tropical Sunset. If I was going to give away an easy brug, CG would be my selection, roots before you can get her in the ground. TS was difficult only because it was green and small, I'm sure it would be easier with more wood. Maya was almost as easy as CG, and she is showing green all up and down the log.
well ain't that special Sherry!!
SO - will you grow them like that or once you get a tall straight shoot going, cut it off and root it as well?
Carol - the one inground has Y'd as well. I saw what was probably the first 2 buds. One was brown at the stem where it connects and it looks like I might have touched the other and snapped it when I was cutting out one of the side branches to open it up.
Sherry, you say Maya is showing green all up and down the log. Does that mean that once the roots are formed, you can cut between the green to get multiple plants?
The only log I ever tried didn't make it, think I need to try another.
Also, Sherry, if you have a list for Susanne, I sure would like to be on it.
Hahahaha, Blaine, I've never rooted a log before, and while I was gone 3 hours, we had a downpour, followed by sun/clouds and MayaLog has grown - looks like she is going to grow stuff all along the top of the log. I don't know what to do with any of them. I wonder if I should put them in a brighter place since they've rooted. And, when should I start feeding them? Help!!! I'm attaching a photo of Momma Maya, she is pretty close to being my fav and she hasn't even bloomed or Yed yet. I think this nice rain today might speed things along. Thanks for your interest Blaine, I'm very excited about my logs...
Linda, I've never grown a log so I don't have a clue what to do, ya think I should cut it in half or thirds when it gets some size on it. I put it in a big pot so it would have room to grow. Attached is Baby Maya, who was as big as her momma, until I cut her off, then cut off a log - she had giant leaves but she stressed and I thought I'd lose her for sure, but here she is making her debut and I don't think you can see it, but she's leafing out all along her trunk and it looks like a couple of suckers are there too. She's so cute, spittin' image of her mom!!
SherryLike; what is with all the watering jugs beside your brugs?
Linda
BTW Your Maya is beautiful. Matter of fact all the brugs look good.
Linda, I've added you to my Susanne list, along with Blaine. I doubt if I'll have any more cuttings than that because poor Susanne was defoliated when her first flush bloomed - but, I will tell you that she is a trooper and her blooms have the nicest staying power of any brug I have and, considering that chemicals blew her tops off, I'm MOST impressed!! Also, she stressed, lost all her leaves when she arrived, and was still the first to flush. BTW, the US Post Office is why Maya and Susanne stressed, they were ridden around in a truck for an extra day during unusually (((HOT/HUMID)). So, here is a photo of her now, she's leafing nicely and, if I can ever get a cutting for myself, I'll put her in the ground. Last year, my first freeze was Dec 15, so surely she'll produce before then...
Thank you Linda 2pugs!!! The blue coil is ONE of my coil water hoses, I'm nuts for them and absolutely could not do without them and they don't distract me like a regular hose does. My plastic water bucket collection goes back to the early 70ies...little things mean lots, ya know??!!
I thought maybe you would fill with water and let it sit to remove the chlorine then water your brugs.
Linda
Hey, Linda - yep, I fill the buckets the night before, and then fill them right back up to use in the afternoon. We are getting strong wind from Dennis and rain is expected. I'm a bit concerned that PB and Rosamond might get blown to kingdom come...happy Monday!!!
Is there anyway you can secure your brugs. I feel for you. I know I would hate to have the strong winds very heavy rain. Good luck to you Sherry and to PB and Rosamond. Please keep us informed.
Linda
one of my half-barrel brugs had developed multiple trunks so I cut one out yesterday. Cut two 4" pieces, each with a couple of nodes on them and let them lay on the table till the ends dried. Pressed them into pots and set where they'll be in the shade. Now see what happens with this half-hearted attempt.
You won't have to worry about it rooting, you could throw a cutting in a bucket of s--- and it would come out smelling like a Brug. You just have the knack, or maybe I should say skill. LOL
blind luck maybe?
it's almost time to tell on myself again. I finally took a closer look at a bunch of cuttings I bagged up a couple weeks ago. Thought I was pretty clever but apparently sun was getting to half of it in the afternoon and most of them are just sticks now. I think there was 4 or 5 out of 24 that still had leaves and may be making it.
I wouldn't call it blind luck. You do the experimenting and you have great success. You may loose a few every now and then but what you don't loose grows like a weed.
Linda
Blaine, I enjoyed your 'coffee tour' on the perennial forum. You must be a hoot.
If it were not so difficult, I also would have garage nutrients.
better a hoot than a poot! ;P
Adding some afternoon shots to that coffee tour
I saw them and they are unbelievable. You have quite a garden.
They are beautiful, I'm really sold on Maya!!! I'm going to draw straws on Sat and put one of mine in the ground. I have one Maya bloom, and lots of buds, she smells great...
thanks Sherry!! I'm looking forward to that acid test because it looks so much like PC which has been a blooming fool and pretty but just has that light citrus smell.
Maya opened during drenching rain/wind and possibly her fragrance is inhibited - I hope that is why she didn't knock me over, smells good, but not particularly distinctive, thus far...
You GO Blaine!!! Mine has buds, but not as far along as yours...but close. I think you got yours about 4 days before I did...I wonder if they will bloom fully at the 'same' number of days?
You and Bud sure do a great job!!! (talking sternly to Maya this morning...maybe even pleading...).
Fanplantastic!
Your groupy,
Carol ;>)))
i think i'm getting a complex...
hope there is a cure
No need for a complex dear Blaine. Truth is truth and you're all that AND a bag of chips!! I, too, am one of your biggest fans lol :-)
Hugs
Julie
Someone is going to be VERY happy, WOW!!! That is past beautiful and oh so healthy...did I mention that zone 5a is magic, lol...
That is just beautiful. WTG Blaine!
you know I just realized I'm probably Lucky Kell hasn't given me a good tongue lashing for growing it out in that skanky old pot. That thing has been around for 7 or 8 years I think.
Blaine, awwww, now that pot has "character," and I'm sure that Kell is proud as can be of what you've done with her cuttings. I know I am!
From the looks of things, with your magic touch, this Maya would look just as gorgeous in a trash can!
Jackie
Think you fav color in acrylics, makes a masterpiece outta stuff, and will make you feel like Blain Da Vinchi, about a buck a bottle, soap and water clean up. Try sage green, then a glaze, red, purple, whatever, no way to mess up, it always looks great...cheap, easy, fast...
Definitely an option but I do like things that don't look like they're brand new and if I do put something in a container, the plant needs to be the focal point. You oughta hear how many times a year I get suggestions from the DW about staining or painting the deck. Nope! Aged wood so you almost don't notice it. I want to notice the plants.
IMO, the trick with paint is to make it look OLD, AGED, like it aged to sage green, with purple glaze, think faux. It's amazing. I have a newish pot, white, that I hated, put purple and teal stripes on it, took 3 minutes and it makes the plant look WAY better...
PS - I'm known here as the Diva of the Decks (and Fans). I've been building decks for 30 years, and I've NEVER stained or painted a single one, with exception of a very small front porch/deck to my barn, but ONLY to deter carpenter bees or wasps, or whatever they are. I will admit that I'm liking it, but I will never stain/paint the other decks, if for nothing else than I don't want to have to paint/stain each year...
