How do I root a cutting from this shrub? The only thing that I have ever rooted is some New Guinea Impatiens and regular ivy. Don't have root hormone, but can get some. Don't have any special tools, etc. and would prefer not to have to get them.
How do I decide where to take the cutting?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Sheila

Sheila,
I will tell you what I did with a weigela. I am not the normal person on propagating but it works for me at times.
Last fall, I trimmed back the small weigela I had gotten. I had cut into the wood stems which I had found out you aren't supposed to, only the new growth is to be pruned.
Anyways, I had some extra branches so I hated to waste them and wanted to get one going for my neighbor. I just stuck it into a pot that has pretty wet soil and over the winter it set some pretty good roots.
I was really amazed that something that woody would root. I have done this with other plants thru the wet winter and they seem to grow. Doing it at this time of the year it probably won't work unless you are always keeping it quite moist.
Just my ways.
Carol
About how long do you let the cuttings sit? I am trying to propogate at least 6 weigela. Would it be about a year before its ready to plant?
Oh, it wasn't very long before it had good roots.
Probably like 4-6 months. Not a year at all.
Carol
