How ya doin' Songbird??????
I got those photos too, they're quite amazing.
I hope you guys are safe and sound, I hope you don't met up with the wicked witch.
(spelling corrected ti witch after I looked at 'which' and couldn't figure out why it looked funny)
Those are unbelievable.........I've seen clouds like them twice in the Battlefords and a couple times here. The first time was the year Edmonton and one of the parks in Saskatchewan, near North Battleford, was hit pretty hard. On another ocassion the sky turned solid black in the middle of the day. The principal at the school I worked at was looking very, very concerned (the school had 700 elementary students and was unprotected). The last time the funnel formed over CFB Moose Jaw but, unlike Songbirds experience, it never touched down.
So far the clouds have split around us but the heat/humidity is still really high.....hoping that any cool fronts stay far, far, far away.
edited to say I had to laugh at your witch Linda.......the system we've got is courtesy of Texas (close enough to Kansas ;).

In my neck of the woods (60 miles SE of Calgary) I haven't seen the dramatic skies like those amazing photos but it has been mainly grey and oh so wet since the first of June. Today I emptied the rain gauge (again) and so far this month we have had 15.5 inches. We are at a higher elevation but areas near rivers and creeks have experienced a lot of flooding. What I have managed to get planted out between showers is doing great but I still have lots of plants waiting to find their way into the garden. Forecast is for more of the same and I have a wedding to attend tomorrow :(
Susan
The worst is over Susan. According to the Weather Network, you should get a little repreive there in the South and the Northern areas around Edmonton will get mighty dumps of rain. My Mom and my Son live in Edmonton. I will get the lowdown from them later. Meanwhile, enjoy that wedding! :)
Incredible pictures, but scary to. You all take care!
:) Donna
You're right Donna - You just can't trust those weather guys. The weather report I heard last night was stating there was a heavy rainfall warning in effect. Only half an inch fell between 8pm and 8am. This morning the sun is shining and the forecast says there is 60% possibility of precipitation. Who knows what to expect. I will be taking my umbrella just in case....
Susan
Hi!
Still here, although last night's stormy was pretty intense. It blew the second metal shed down again! We had replaced the one shed that blew away last week with a heavy wooden one but the second wooden one is still under construction in the shop. We had added some more screws to the metal one that was still standing but last nights driving wind and rain was too much for it. Even the fence that has every second post cemented in, was flexing in the wind!
I got those pictures over the internet, too, but I never seen those cloud formations in the sky here but they could have been taking somewhere else around here. One of my dogs is afraid of thunder and she was absolutely bug-eyed yesterday. We have to put her in her crate so she doesn't hurt herself scuttling around in a panic. Poor thing.
In town the streets were flooding and the manhole covers were blowing off. Glad I live on high ground! Crazy weather! We got 4 inches yesterday and I dumped out 16 inches of rain from my rain guage before that. Yep, we are well watered here now!
Like Durtcom, what I planted is doing great but I have a whack of stuff to plant out yet. It'll be another week before this drys out! Lilypon and Durtcom, how did you fare in yesterday's storm? Hope it's better today cause my daughter is 15 today and is having 10 kids over for a birthday party! Poor kid always gets the lousiest weather on her birthday. Two years ago we got caught in a hail storm while transporting them to the indoor pool. They were all screaming and one kid asked me if we were all going to die. Crazy!
So good to hear from you Songbird Ü......I kinda figured you would be getting similar weather to what we were facing last night. Your poor sheds are sure taking a beating. :S So far we haven't flooded but we are preparing and the flood gates are open (the levels high.....between the water our rivers are carrying from Alberta and whats fallen here).
This thread tells our story: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/521000/
Crazy is right, Benda. Glad to hear that it's giving you a little break. Hope the North fends as well. It takes stories like this on the Prairies that put things into perspective again. I won't be snivelling about a couple days rain. We, too, have gotten a break from the rain this morning. The clouds are still low, but it looks almost surreal as they hover around the mountains. No rain, so I was out staking my roses that were heavy and hanging because of the rain. Our forecast is back to normal temperatures with sunshine and temps in the low 30's by Tuesday, Wednesday. That's more like it. Maybe now my tomatos, peppers, corn and cukes will get the blast of heat that they need so much. The Cherries are supposed to be ripe by the end of June, beginning of July, but I kinda wonder if they will be late this year because of the cool wet days we have been having. My DH tried a few, but they aren't ready yet. Bring on the Sun!!
Ooh Cherries! I can't wait for the cherries to be ready! I've already been watching to see when our Okanagan Fruit Stand will open.
Saturday was a weird weather day - we must have been just outside the edge of the big rain storm Friday night. Like I mentioned in my earlier post it was sunny and not much rain overnight. My folks who live in Calgary didn't fair as well. While we were enjoying the sun they called to say that they woke at 6 am to 2-3 inches of water covering their basement. In town it had rained all night and was still coming down. They aren't in a flood area but the ground is so saturated that the rain is finding other places to drain. My cousin's wedding in Calgary had to be moved indoors and my sister in Bragg Creek west of Calgary was on flood watch with a similar situation as my parents in their basement. The family spent the day in shifts between the wedding and water duty at the folks until around 3 am Sunday. On the way home in the wee hours there was a campground near the Bow River being evacuated and we could see the water up over the banks almost to the highway. The rain subsided Saturday evening and Sunday was clear so hopefully things will dry up for them.
Susan
Oh Susan what a rotten development on such a special day!!! We saw a couple here in town on Saturday that had just been married.....I commented to my husband that I bet they were on pins and needles all night.
It's time for the rains to go away!!!
Sorry to hear of the nasty news in Calgary. Saw some people being evaculated from a campsite on the news. Tsk, tsk. Not to worry, we have sunshine, clear blue skies and a high predicted of 30C today. I'll send some of it east to you guys in Alberta. You'll be dried up in no time. :D
How are you Alberta peeps doing now.......the weather channels showing the pics above, with the funnel dropping, over Lethbridge/Brooks area and close to Taber Alberta. :( So far they have said they've been dancing out in the fields but anyone nearby is advised to head to the basement and get under the stairs.

We were close to the Tornando watch. They were calling for Suffield residents to take cover and i am close enough to Suffield to here and sometimes feel the vibrations of the bombing they do out there for practise. We saw lots of lightening and activity around us but we only got a little wee bit of rain, thank goodness! Yesterday was in the mid 30's but felt like +40 with the humidity. It was a really hot & sticky day. Yesterday, I had another little disaster in my yard, this time courtsey of the neighbors bull. His bulls all got out and 4 were in my yard. One horned and horned one of my trees until it was completely limbed as high as the bull could reach. Another one tried to jump the fence and took out the top wire. Here I am first thin in the morning yelling and flapping my arms at a bull that was just ignoring me. It took the truck and two Rotties to get them out of the yard. My dogs are way to docile. If they would at least bark some and try to live up to their rep as being scary dogs it would have made the job a lot easier! To top it off, later in the day my little terri-poo slipped in a cow patty and needed a major bath! Looks pretty happy doesn't he?!
LOLOL........oh dear. Sure glad it missed you......the nights are so hot now we just sit and watch the warnings. Your yard sure is taking a beating from nature one way or another.
Poor puppy!!!
That is one shitty dog. Hope you managed to hose him down/catch him before he tried to go into the house. Looks very good and fresh. Poor puppy and poor Joelle, destinking him/her,
Horrendous picture in Globe & Mail to day of a twister near Lethbridge. Looks like Kansas or Oklahoma.
Inanda
My, Brenda, it sounds like you had yourself a heck of a day. Hope you are having a better Wednesday. Too bad about your tree. I'd a been madder than one your Rotties if that would have happened to my tree. >:-(
Poor pooch, he probably couldn't even stand smelling himself for a while, huh? LOL Lots of fun on the farm!
It's never dull around here that's for sure! Let's hope this weather settles down so we can get back to some normal gardening!
