Those Darn Earthquakes!!!!!!!!!

Mesilla Park, NM

Anyone get affected by those darn earthquakes. We got two jolts here this week. Today's quake just rearranged one of our bedrooms. It broke shelving, lamps, and lots of glassware.

If it isn't flooding down here, there's a whole lot of shakin going on....

Capistrano Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

just a little rumbling here. and terrible tsunami warnings.

Garberville, CA(Zone 9a)

We had a 7.2 earthquake on Tuesday night. Thankfully it was a ways out to sea, and a few miles down. Shelter Cove, Ferndale and parts of Crescent City were evaquated due to strong tsunami warnings. I live about an hour south of Fortuna, and only felt a small shifting in the ground.

Its crazy that they're happening up and down CA in the same week.

I'm glad! I have been worried because we haven't had an earthquake in a long time. My hope is that clusters of low level quakes like this will release some of the pressure (gently) and we won't have a big slip that sends some of us out into the ocean! I have a great website that I visit to check on them and see what's happening. It shows earthquakes worldwide. Click on "USA" under "Recent Earthquakes" and you can click anywhere on the map to get a close-up of your area. It shows when the earthquake happened and the magnitude. There are other page links you can go to to get a full list, ect. Check it out!

I'm with Kachinagirl,

Although they are a bit unnerving, these quakes are actually a nice pressure relief on our many faults. I'm a little concerned about the clusters locally around here, but that's mostly because the horses freak out a bit and we worry about them injuring themselve in a panic.

Sorry to read about your design alterations Gourd, but it is an opportunity to change things you might be getting tired of...lol. Think of it as a perfect excuse to redo a room ;-))

Here we got a good roll from the Anza quake which was just a few miles east of us. Knocked down some stuff and broke a few pieces of crystal, but all in all it was a nice ride. Yesterday's temblor was barely felt.

hope your well,
Don

I felt that too it's not fun for that lol!

It keep doing!

Santa Cruz Mountains, CA(Zone 9a)

From my perch here atop a mountain about 2000 feet directly above the famous San Andreas, I didn't feel a thing. (Can't say that was true in '89!) Thanks, you Northerners and Southerners, for relieving the pressure. I figure that in about 3 million years I can sit on my porch and look to the west across the fault as LA glides by heading north.

As a closet geologist, I seek out earth-shaping information. I recently found a new book in our local library called Finding Fault in California by Susan Hough. Read it from cover to cover, and on a recent trip to AZ to visit my mother, took back roads and byways to look at some of the sites she mentions. If you are interested, or fascinated as I am, in earthshaking information, seek out this book. She also has a website http://www.findingfault.com/

I have a great place for you to check out fault geology, CApoppy! There's a new "upscale golfing community" built in a small valley about 8 miles west of Patterson. Diablo Grande. As I drove in for an appointment I sincerely wondered about those people and all their money (and supposedly all their smarts) building huge custom homes in there. Didn't they notice the sedimentary stone lines at 45 degree angles on the sides of the mountains? You can SEE the slip marks! What are they thinking? The fault appears to run right through their valley! And they are putting in $100,000 swimming pools (you can imagine the home prices!). I just shake my head every time I go there. Very interesting place for a geologist, though! There are rattlesnakes, so wear your boots and bring your snake stick.

I'm in the thankful crowd for the small ones. We felt the Anza quake pretty good here, too, and though it was quite sharp we had no damage at all. However, our parrots went nuts before we even felt it, of course -- so I can imagine how Don worries about the horses.

I was in Placentia (at a nursery as it happened) when the Yucaipa quake hit and that was much more pleasant -- just a little rolling motion.

Kachinagirl, there's also a section on usgs where you can report how you felt the quake, and watch the zip code reports come in -- very interesting. http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/

You are all so right..

It certainly was time to redecorate (my daughter said the same thing), time to clean out and get rid of all those things you did not need anyway.

Makes sense to me to relieve the pressure there.

Gonna check out those sites you all posted. It sure has been a hot day today.

I've lived in in Southern Cal and Northern Cal since 1960, gone thru a few good one or should I say bad one?? LOL, the only thing that scared me were the tsunami warnings!!!!!! And I love California, I think we are in for the long run,

At least with an earthquake, my house will be where I left it, not wet and blown all over the territory like you folk with the hurricanes lol.

Hey Gourd, we missed you at the roundup.

I've heard that florist's clay holds the crystal down.

Just wanted to pop in and say we had a couple more quakes about a month ago... sorry I haven't been here lately, have got company for about another month.

I barely have time to get dressed lately.

Sorry I missed the RU, don't know when anything will be normal around here.

See you all later. Hopefully I can check in at least once a week here.

Everyone have a nice summer if I don't show up a whole lot here. It is hotter than heck here, 107 today.
