Cypress Vine

Cleveland, OH(Zone 5b)

What will this plant do if there is no trellis to support it? Will it bloom as a groundcover? Thanx for any info.

COLUMBIA, TN(Zone 6b)

I THINK IT WILL PROBABLY JUST RUN ON THE GROUND. I HAD VOLUNTEERS THAT RAN EVERYWHERE----BETH

Celia..
yes it will grow on it's self .. run on the ground.. and cascade some if it gets to the edge of anything.. and it will bloom .. why not give it something to grow on... I don't think it would be a full groundcover as you might be imagineing...
I found a new place for my cypress vine to grow this year.. I've a standard rose [ New Zealand ] potteed with a bunch of purple flowers as an underplanting.. as I was looking at it yestrday the long stem and stake i has looked like it needed some beautification.. so now it has a few cypress vine starts which will grow up the 3' stem... I guess I'll have to trim it when it reaches the rose// or perhaps let it's light lacy foilage twine through New Zealand...

Thanx dix and Gordon,
I did have this vine growing up a trellis along with "Golden Showers" climbing rose. I thought it looked ok. The blooms are kinda small. But the downfall is the leftover dried vines at the top of the trellis that I can't reach! It looks messy now. So I thought if I didn't let it climb, maybe the flowers would look nice on the ground. I didn't know if it would bloom without climbing.
I must have about 100 volunteers from last year's vine (self-seeded). So I thought if I yanked the ones close to the trellis out, I'd keep the ones on the ground.
We'll see. Always a work in progess.
Thanx again!

I take advantage of my plumeria in winter when they are naked and use them to support morning glory vines. They don't hurt the plumerias but it gives me something to look at besides sticks.

yes, the cypress vine will bloom as it grows all over the ground, and if there is anything it can cling to it will run up. I must have pulled up 100 seedlings this morning. They will take over. Can't believe I paid two dollars for my first two in a one gallon pot three years ago. That man must be wealthy as many as he was selling. Can;t imagine how many he must have growing wild. I still have them everywhere if anyone wants some. They even come up in my lawn.

Once you plant Cypress vines, you're never without any. LOL

I got some cypress vine in a load of fill dirt 15 years ago. I have battled all this time and still find them trying to take over the world. Don't let the genie out of the bottle. It is a first class pest.

Uh oh.....Pandora's Box has been opened! They're everywhere!

Can you believe none of mine came up this year??? Not even the seeds I started! So what's with that???

Savannah, GA(Zone 8b)

I call it the kudzu of my yard. This year, it is covering everything. Today, I was pulling vines that must have been close to 100'. In just a few weeks, it was choking most everything. Covered my two rose bushes. I will get the round up when I see new sprouts sticking their pretty head up. Just give it a couple of years, you will probably have it everywhere. The hummers love it and it is pretty until it takes over!

OH.. tiny flowers .. well yes.. they bloom white or pink or red.. .. I have them growing together for years.. and I'd expect some crossses.. like a white and red flower... from the collected seeds... but I haven't run on any like that yet...
I have a standard rose.. with about a 3' - 4 ' main trunk... the stem allways looks so bare I descided to grow some cypress vines up the trunk... I do have to pull it out of the rose part on top alot... but I just pull it out and let it drape back aganst the cypress vines of the trunk..

I have them, they don't make a lot of seeds here, could be the weather(dry and hot with a constant breeze). I've got them climbing in an orchid tree, on the fence, on a dead ficus. They're light and airy and don't seem to hurt anything.

here's that little flower .. in red... tey even reseed here ... as well as the ones I planted inside in late winter ...
