Secret Summer/Spring Plants That We Got

Collins (90 min. dr, MS(Zone 8b)

I was OVERWHELMED at what I received from CrestedChick. Started a "Brand New Garden Site" yesterday with mostly just plants she'd sent me! Look at what she sent (LOADS) & I'm not talking cutting or itty bitty plants either! I had to look several of these up to see what they were.

Hibiscus -Sun Showers Perennial
Alstromeria (I LOVE these)
Hellebore (
(Never even HEARD of this, but look how delicate the flowers are!--friend said they're to bloom in the winter)
Varigated Iris (always hardy) Hardy Geraniums (Hope they're perennial)
Crown Imperial (OMG! I've never even seen one!)
Hedychium Anne Bishop (Never heard of, but is gorgeous) Thunbergia African sun (I have an orange one & a baby blue one, but have never seen this color).
I had SO much fun opening my package!!!

Ooops. Posted above about a different trade I had forgotten about - even though it was arranged only a couple days ago - so I haven't gotten my secret trade yet. Anyone else have that over-40 brain fade going on?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

How about the 50/13 brain, going on 50/14?

Went to let the dogs out last night, through the garage and to open the door to the dogs pen, but saw the pruners to be put away, so went through with them and out the gate and wondered why I was there: WITH THE PRUNERS IN MY HAND! It was to chop back the Butterfly Bush and I did but boy is that ever annoying when the memory takes time off without warning.

Edited for typos and because I forgot to finish the sentence! Yikes!

I did the same thing eileen, except I have no other excuse at 29. I had just plain forgotten about the box coming.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Lulu, 29? You are just a baby, and forgetting already? Wait til you get where I am at?

I forget to earn a living sometimes...........

Coventry, RI(Zone 6a)

LOL, yep, just a babe at the moment. Done lots in life, still more to do. I think I get spacy because I do too much!! Building my own business(es), obsessing over 2 acres of wild yard that neeeeeeeeds flowers, taking care of my not so healthy mom, entertaining as much as possible, and of course being young(ish) and enjoying life.... I could easily forget to earn a living while in the beds. So, I'm starting at looking at moving towards something green related for income. Need a good job that will work with babies someday.....

Might want to contact Butterflychaser and ask her how she started selling plants on eBay. She's a sweetie and can give you her thoughts.

Eileenmlamb, you are preaching to the choir, as we say! Ever start a sentence, only to stop in midstream and just stare blankly into space (empty space - just like my empty head at that moment)?
Seems like I'm always looking for something I've misplaced. My DH, who really is fabulous, always asks 'What are you looking for?' This question annoys the very **** out of me because it shifts the brain into another dimension where I have to actually communicate with words! It distracts me from focusing on what I'm trying to find!

But he's going to start understanding soon. He just turned 45 (I'm almost 2 years older than he) and I witnessed him looking for something that was right in front of him! LOL Either it's "catching", or he's starting to have 'estrogen moments'!

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Kim Gaither! You really outdid yourself! I cannot believe the box of wonderful plants you sent to me. Yes, I am home during the day, I have been disabled since 2000, so most days I am here.
Here is a list of what I received today:
Peach-leaf Bellflower (campamula persicifolia)
Enchinacea Purpurea "Magnus"
Dwarf Balloon Flower (Platycodon)
Tradescantia x Andersoniana "Concorde Grape"
Daylily "Chicago Rainbow"
Carnation "Picotee"
Zinnia "Swizzle Cherry and Ivory"
Dahlia Variablis "Redskin"
Ipomoea "Margarita" and "Sweet Carolina Purple"
Iris Pallida "Variegated"
Polemonium Caeruleum "Brise d"Anjou"
Formosa Lily
Thank you for your generousity Kim, I do not at present have any of these items in my garden. You have always been a very knowlegable and generous trader. I believe you must truly be a kind person. God blesses those that bless the lives of others with kindness. I am certain you are one who will be blessed many times over.

Took my package to the USPS today.............traveling west.............and someone is getting something from their wish list...............

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

My package went out this afternoon and is headed west. If it were headed east it would be Europe!

(Zone 7a)

You are very welcome and they all seem to be in good shape..I forgot to label the varities...

The Balloon Flower is

The Iris is

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Is the Iris color the pale lavendar or is it the darker one. I love all of it and almost got it planted. Will try to finish tomorrow. Thanks again! I can hardly wait for the daylily to bloom! The Dahlia is really pretty too. I put some of them in a pot and of course some will go into the garden. I have been very sick lately and start a series of Infusion IV's tomorrow. Each one is a four to five hour drip and I will have them for five days straight. So I am trying to get as much done before 11:00 as I am able. Very slowly, but with love! LOL

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Janet - I will pray for you. Good health is never appreciated as much as it should be and that goes for my minor ailment as well as everyone's.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Thank you so much. I was diagnosed with MS last year and had four IV solu-medrol for five days each. I didn't do well with steroids so we are trying something else. Also changing from Copaxone which didn't have effect on relaspes to Beta-seron...this one has been around the longest and is the srtongest of the ABC drugs. All prayers will be greatly appreciated. Without my Lord and Savoir I wouldn't have made it through this past year. He has given me strength and courage I never knew I had.
God Bless you all, I will be back as soon as I am up to it!
JanetS

Janet, you are in my prayers. May your time with hands in the dirt be healing for you and may you feel God's love and peace wherever you are.

Colleen, I'm so glad you liked the plants. I just kept stuffing the box until it was full. They should all do just fine once they're planted. If the butterdaisies look a bit wilted, don't worry - I've brought them back from the seeming dead before. lol

Soquel, CA(Zone 9a)

I think it is kind of ironic that you were my secret trader, because I am a nurse. I wish you blessings in your fight with MS. The best medicine I have ever given any of my patients (and they have told me this) is a smile and a laugh. So, keep your good cheer, it can save your life!

Anita

Soquel, CA(Zone 9a)

OOOH my secret package arrived today! And it was from Mudgirl (Amy) in Wisconsin! I am the lucky recipient of:

Beautiful soap for garden weary hands, made by Amy herself! (and it smells fabulous!)
Lovely notecards with flowers
Siberian Iris 'Dear Delight' - can't wait to see what color this is!
Veronica spicata 'Goodness grows' - beautiful purple color
Purple pasque flower - I have only 2 of these, so this is a welcome addition!
And two large divisions of two plants she has labeled 'wish list #1 and #2'.

All the plants arrived in great condition, and tomorrow is garden day so I'll be able to get them in the ground right away! I have spots for everything already picked out, except for the 'mystery' plants. I'll need to go back to my list and see if I can figure them out!

What a wonderful package to be waiting for me at the end of a busy day! Thank you, Amy! I'm nuts about soap, too, so it will be put to use immediately. I'm looking forward to looking at the mystery plants more closely and comparing them with my list! I'll let you know when I've figured it out, or I'll post that I need help!
Oh, and I forgot to mention - a sample packet of some liquid gloves that protect your hands while you are gardening! I've always wanted to try something like that, so tomorrow is the day!

Tatyana/7sisters,
I am so glad everything made the trip, but mostly I'm thrilled that you like it all. I had a great time spoiling you! You do have another package coming from a grower there in California- It should come Thursday.....if not probably Friday.
Have a wonderful day of planting! :)

And this, gardening friends, is what makes these trades so special. I feel such joy when everyone posts what they got and the happiness they feel. (sigh)

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

Yes, Carmen, thanks for doing this too. Part of all this from your efforts.
Carol

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

None of us would have received a single plant without you taking the lead, Carmen. Thank you so much!

Coventry, RI(Zone 6a)

I got my box too! For real this time! Bward was my trader, and boy do we have opposite gardens!! But, we found some little darlings to swap in the end. :)

Other than a couple of ivies, and a few african violets, no houseplants in this house.....until my box! I recieved 3 begonias (at least one is a cane begonia), a variegated philedendron (I think), walking iris, 2 neat coleus, kong coleus, this neat sorta hosta lookin' with a white stand up "bloom" that almost looks like a leaf with seed pod in the middle (pics might be better, LOL). I know I've seen them before, and the name escapes me. Oooh, and there were some siberian iris! My windows are tiny and few in this ancient house of mine. I hope I can find happy homes for them. Electric gardening, here I come!

-Lu

My trader has been busy with some personal stuff, so if she can't pop in here, I might just list what I remember of the contents of her box. She seemed happy too! :)

West Central, WI(Zone 4a)

Pixy - so pleased to hear your box arrived--and in time for gardening day!
Sib. iris, Dear Delight is a baby blue - round ruffled form - a bit shorter than the avg sib, but not a dwarf.

If you can get to identifying Wish List #1 and #2 and need to get moving on planting them, let me know........I'll give you some hints!

I'm a non-glove-wearer and tried the liquid glove on a whim--actually works pretty good. There is more that one use in that packet--but make sure you use enough--I think they say a dime size--and rub into knuckles and around fingernails well. From the garden to a date w/ nary a trace of dirt to be seen!

Happy Planting~

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Dear bluekat76,

What an astonishing and amazing package! I AM SO VERY PLEASED! You are too good to be true! Thanks also, per your note, to Jill/Critterologist for your help.

Everything was packaged so well: the leaves of everything are happy and standing up, nothing is limp. Please let me rave over what's in the package:

Epimedium: thanks also to levilyla (It's my first one and love the height)

Mini hosta - I adore it!!!!!!!!!!

Medium hosta - eager to know the name and I know you wrote that you're getting it but still I didn't even have it until today!!!!!!!!

Coreopsis 'Early Sunrise' - loved it when I saw it in a nursery in May and now it's all mine!!!

Coreopsis 'Sweet Dreams' - love this plant and how it will match my purple spider. It's just perfect!

Salvia lyrate 'Purple Knockout' - how great is this!!! Never had it but I love it.

Bergenia 'Winterglow' - have just the spot for it and love the big glossy green foliage. Ideal!

Daylily 'Spider Miracle' - yellow w/green throat! I'm so excited - this is just my third spider!

Hosta 'Cherry Belle' - every hosta is always welcome in our garden! Cherry will have lots of good company and it's wonderful. It will go in my most special hosta garden: the friends hosta garden.

Astilbe 'Fanale' - beautiful color and form and one of the latest ones of the season. I love Astilbe and think they remind me of those big spun sugar delights at circuses. It's such a beautiful plant and I'm so happy to have it.

Kim, there isn't a thing you sent that I don't just love to bits. You are so great. You packed so well and they look like they've never been moved from their previous home. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

And Jack says Hi back to you!

What a lovely surpirse - When I got home from work today there was a BIG box sitting inside my fence! I was practically dancing! Pirl, you were truly generous and I am thrilled. There were 3 hostas, including Frances Williams and Gold Edger, which will go beautifully in the shade garden, as will the astilbe pumila. I'm trying to decide right now where to plant the penstemon Husker's Red. The Richard Wallace cannas will go right into the tropical bed and (best of all) a large lovely bunch of purple LA iris, which will complement the yellow ones in my creek! I can't wait to see them next spring - what a velvety shade of purple! It seems funny to see blooms on them; by June, mine are only a memory here in the South. Arlene, thanks so much for making my day brighter and a big thanks to Carmen for making all of us smile!
Karen

Decatur, GA(Zone 7a)

I'm blushing! I knew PIRL would make anyone happy.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Carmen - you are too cute! and REDBIRD I'm thrilled you like your package. I hope they were in the great shape that mine, from Kim/bluekat76, were! I tried my best to select the Louisiana iris with tight buds figuring you'd open the package and be greeted by blooms. I just wanted you to know positively they were purple. The yellow signal should match your yellow La's.

What a perfect day for us!

Mine are now soaking in a special solution and ready for my gardening tomorrow. I already told Jack I'm getting up at 5 AM just to start planting while it's nice and cool.

Thank you Carmen for hosting.
Thank you Kim for my package.
Thank you Jill for helping Kim with her first trade.
Thank you Levilyla for giving to Kim to give to me.
Thank you Mr. President: no no no - I just got carried away!
