Ahhh yes Victoria!

Isn't that the most wonderful thing????? I've seen it on several garden shows and it is truly amazing. There is a botanical garden someplace (famous, but the name is eluding me right now) in Pennsylvania I think that has quite a collection of these and a gal in Colorado who specializes in them also.

In your next garden Candy you will have to splurge on one.

gorgeous. I'm guessing it costs oodles of dough

oh, gorgeous! is that the sacred lotus, candy? that is an amazing photo. how huge are those leaves?

before brugs and roses, lotus is my love. i have one growing in a cement tub, and the leaves are the size of mini-pancakes. i'm afraid i don't feed it enough.

Mine is Sacred Water Lily, Lotus 'Perry's Giant Sunburst' (Nelumbo nucifera)

I just had leaves that stood not far off the surface last year in its first season in the pond. There are two buds so far and since it hasn't bloomed before I don't know how long it will take the bud to develop fully. The leaves this year are much larger, the largest leaf is probably 18" in diameter and stands 18" off the surface of the water.

The Victorias are just magnificant, but just a few pads would take up my whole pond. :-)

Not the clearest image I've ever taken, but a storm front is coming through with winds kicking up. As I passed by, look who came visiting.......he returned again and again to just this one bud. Looking for some sweet nectar perhaps?

thanks for plant file link, candy. the lotus is one of the reasons i wanted to learn to paint. and that led me to gardening, too. last fall we were in beijing, and while visiting the summer palace, all i wanted to take photos of are the lotuses. (the temples and other buildings all look the same anyhow. lol.)

the dragonfly visiting is another treat...wow. what a moment. you take beautiful photographs.

i will definitely paint tomorrow.

Well the red dragon fly is enamored with these buds, but wasn't around this AM when I took an updated photo of the largest bud. It is now a good 4" tall and getting very fat. It's been two weeks since the last image was posted and there are now two smaller buds developing.

WHAT A BEAUTY Candy!!! It's taking my breath away! :D Ü :D

I purchased 'Charles Thomas' and am hoping I too will see a Lotus flower this year.

Northern California, CA

It is just an amazing bloom.....probably 9-10" across.....wow. I don't know much about these, last year was the first year for them in my pond. As I was rushing around this AM to hurry off to my appointed rounds (nursery hopping, what else!), it began to close up.

So I need to do a little research on these, since it closed up completely in the heat of the day. Will keep an eye on it this evening and see if it opens at night. It may have been just closing when I snapped it early this AM, rather than opening. :-)

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

happenstance, what a beautiful and amazing bloom. And I loved your wonderful dragonfly, don't see too many of those around here. Your lotus is just great and shows the good care you have given it. DonnaS

Northern California, CA

Thanks Donna, but I haven't done a thing to it. :-)

I purchased it at a local home center last summer, dropped it in the pond, watched it make leaves last year, watched it die back this winter, watched the HUGE leaves re-emerge this Spring and then I spied the buds!! This is one beautiful plant!

A couple of hours ago there was a blue dragonfly hovering on the next largest bud, which hasn't opened yet....but he took off for home before I could get the camera.

There's are a couple of additional images of this amazing bloom over on the Photos Forum:

Do you have it in a pot or is it an earth-bottom pond?

Northern California, CA

The pond has a liner, the plastic pot which has no holes in the bottom sits on the bottom of the pond. Here's a link to an interesting story about Lotus:

Are you thinking of Longwood Gardens in Pa...What a place...was there Many years ago..

Hap

Northern California, CA

I think that was it......Longwood, yes! It was a great show which I saved on Tivo, which then crashed & burned its brain. Lesson learned.....back it up on a tape. :-)

I've posted some additional images over on the Photos Forum as this bloom evolves:
