seeking "golden lady" seeds

Corte Madera, CA

hello everyone. me again. i'm looking for brug seeds and googled away. the sites i found have almost the same descriptions of seeds, though different companies. and most of them list seeds as datura/brugmansia. i just want BRUG seeds.

thank you very much for your time. looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi, Annapet -

My understanding is you can't get seeds for a particular hybrid. Seeds are created by crossing two different brugs (for example Golden Lady X Creamsicle) and the resulting plant would be a new hybrid. To get a true "Golden Lady" you would have to get a cutting or a rooted plant.

If it's just seeds you want - I have some different crosses that I could send you some to experiment with growing. However, if it's really Golden Lady you want - you will have to try and locate a cutting or plant on Ebay or another grower or else wait till the fall when the many, many generous people on this forum start to cut back their plants for the winter and offer them to other members in trade or for postage.

When I can get outside in a bit, I'll see if I can get you a cutting off my GL. If so, I'll root it and send it on it's way. :) I can't remember right off the top of my head, how big she is. LOL

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Annapet, I just answered your E. :) I found a nice piece to cut on and will root it for you if it doesn't have roots already.

Corte Madera, CA

maraming, maraming salamat (many, many thanks - - - in my language), diane and michele! for those who sent me e-mails also - - - you all make this place rock. THANK YOU.

sincerely,
annapet

I remember reading somewhere that your real name was more 'funny' than your dg name and for the life of me I do not remember where I saw it. I think it's cute. Now you have to tell me what language that is? :)

Your GL is in the dirt. Hoping I can send her on in a week or so.

Corte Madera, CA

oh, my. already in the dirt...i'm dancing around like a fool!

annapet is a little unusual, don't you think? and it doesn't mean anything in pilipino/filipino either. my parents made it up. (how creative, ha-ha.) the reference to my name was mentioned in drdon's "bigasslififolia" (?) thread. see, now i'm thinking about taro recipes again. i'm hungry.

=) salamat.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Hey I know that language- a tiny bit - I use to live in the Philippines. I loved it there.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

That was the thread! I remember the recipe for the taro root now. I like your name. It sounds more like a loving nick name than a given name but it's cute. :) I work with a man from the Philipines and he is such a riot! His name is Apolinar but he goes by Apol (AH-pool) He and I have discussed my obsession with elephant ears many times. I have taken him in pics. He tells me which ones taste good. LOL I told him he can never come to my house because he would eat my garden! He gets a good laugh from that.

Corte Madera, CA

wow, kristi, you did? where? did you ever see brugs there? my friends who still live in the philippines swear brugs are allover the place and grow like weeds. out of boredom some people i know rolled and smoked the leaves and got in trouble...

my family lived in fords, an hour away from you, before we settled in san diego. i miss joisey sometimes.

chele, that's the thing with taro. in the philippines, they were never ornamental. ha-ha. we eat that stuff. the leaves are especially yummy sauteed in garlic, onion, ginger, and hot peppers, then simmered in coconut milk. nickname is a way of life in the islands. you'll see real names only on important documents.

I was wondering, would the taro root from the grocery grow into a plant? I planted a piece of ginger one time and it grew.

Corte Madera, CA

linda, that baby will grow. and you know for sure that taro is EDIBLE.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Linda, many of the ears I have this year came from the grocery store. LOL I got some in an Asian Market and some at an awesome store called Jungle Jim's. The second carries food from all over the world! Eclipse does this too. You want to buy the ones called Melanga and taro. You never know what you are gonna get! People are probably tired of this pic, but this is my baby holding the biggest one I bought. It was almost ten pounds!

Edited to say, before I get into trouble...rootdoc sent me the first produce I ever grew! LOL

if this is "iron chef" taro battle...i'll have a five-course meal for you - - - with that one huge taro your baby is holding. so adorable, btw!

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

OH, MY gosh - Badseed - ADORABLE little one!!...I bought a bulb about that size off ebay a year or so ago. It was for the upright EE -- it took FOREVER for that to root and start growing but then it was massive. I love it!

Diane

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Thanks! I am not sure she was thrilled with it. LOL She couldn't eat it and couldn't play with it. I put it in a pot just a bit larger than itself and had roots coming out the bottom and little nubs on top. I finally stuck it in the ground a week or so ago and it sent up the little preleaf things. I said on another forum, if all those itty bitty ones shoot out stalks, that thing might explode. :) I have only been waiting since April. Sigh.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

What a cutie pie (and I don't mean the bulb). The ones I saw weren't nearly that size, they were more like a long lemon size. How do you tell top from bottom?

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

That baby is adorable, is that red hair??? My absolute fav hair color!!! I have Upees, Up Right Elephant Ears. They are huge and I winter them outside, which is why I started off wintering my brugs outside, I've had the Upees for years and years, they are wonderful and such a rich shade of green...they were very slow coming up this year and the brugs came up very quickly. I dunno. I'm going to buy a taro, hopefully this week, sounds like a fun plant...

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the compliments. :)

Most of the time when you look at the tubers, one end will have little holes where the roots were and the other end will sort of have rings or the hint of what I call a little 'nipple' sticking up. There really is no science to round ends or pointy ends. They are like potatoes. Sometimes they are round, other times short and fat, etc. If in doubt, you can lay it down but I don't think it is that hard to tell the ends apart.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Awwwwwwwww that baby is adorable I agree! So sweet holding that lol...huge thing! LOL It would probably feed an army! LOL I love EE's too

I don't understand what it is...but I just can't keep a 'GL' :-( They always die on me. Even the big log ones...they don't like me :-(...

Corte Madera, CA

Does that mean GL is not "easy" to grow? Oh, my. I sure hope I have beginners LUCK.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Well for me it isn't LOL...but I don't think I was doing something right, who knows...it upsets me greatly because everytime I see one in bloom I could kick myself Grrrrrrrrrr...

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Heck, I abuse mine. Sometimes I don't water until they wilt. I toss them in the garage and don't water them all winter and don't leave lights on for them either. Maybe she doesn't like your weather Gabby? As much as I love my brugs (and I am down to about 20), I love so many other plants that I can't just baby one type. :(

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

LOL ya think???? I'd agree with you IF lol...she were outside to enjoy the weather! rofl...She just don't like me I'm tellin ya! I love it when you call me Gabby, I love that name :-)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL Some things I never forget. Good people, I never forget. :)

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

You're one of my favorite peeps too! Muah!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Ahhhhhhhh tru elove. LOL Ho wsweet you guys.

So Chele your baby IS too CUTE!!! I just want to hug her so tight. So is it about time to do it all again?
LOL

I find GL very easy. I left her in the ground for 2 years now and she survives light frosts. She grows like crazy!! A favorite of mine. Maybe it was just the one you had Julie. I think some cuttings just are not meant to survive for some reason.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Kell lol...the one's I get are destined to croak! That and Dr. Suess :-( What is UP with that? I wish I knew. I have murdered them and it is puzzling...I mean they look perfectly fine one day, then they get mushy. Oh well...maybe in the Fall...seems that's the best time to get them going and stay alive. Don't ask me why lol!

Chele, yep, it's time to start all over again, the baby is adorable and growing too fast! My new GD has grown super fast since they got here 2 months ago. *sigh* Can't they just stay little longer??? lol

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

She's already 14 months. :( She is walking, talking and being a real turkey! You oughta see how she smells my plants. LOL Sometimes they stay where they are, sometimes they get decapitated and other times they fly across the yard. Woe is me!

We are actively looking for a home with serious acreage. I'd be happy with 3+ and hubby says it must be 5-10. If we can make plans and find something within the next year, I'll take two more. LOL

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Awwwww Bless your Heart! I was fixing to say ...Hubby is saying 5-10 acres?....lol well you best get ready cos' if you ain't....HE IS!!! LOL You've got such a sense of humor, I love it, always have.

LOL decapitating and flying across the yard LOL...I can't wait till my GD gets to that point!!!! I probably won't even care. hehehe I can't believe she's already 14 months...where does time go? *sigh* as I said, they just grow up too fast

Corte Madera, CA

she sure is a cutie.

my 3-year old son follows me around...or vice versa. he helps me water the plants. sometimes we both get soaked. i don't mind it when it's hot outside.

i hope i don't kill the GL michele is rooting for me. maybe GL will love the weather here so much it will bloom in no time. dream, dream, dream.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Hey I know that song! lol You'll do just fine MG, I'm sure of it :-)

You must really enjoy your 3 year old son...and spend lots of time with him. I always say to my children...who are no long children LOL anymore...but I say, 'Today's moments are tomorrows Memories' and I take pictures all the time. I love taking pictures but more to make memories of moments that are precious today, and will be even more so later down the years. :-)

Hugs
Julie

Here's a pic I took of my GD LOL...she makes some funny faces hehe lol...I think I woke her up and the light came on the camera and made her, shall we say....unfocused? lolol

She sure is a pretty baby, Julie. I can see why you would enjoy taking pictures of her. What a cutie. Michele, I can't believe that little gal has grown so much. She shouldn't be that big or that old already. I've heard that the older we get, the faster time goes by us and I think that might be true.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

That picture is so great! Looks like you sneaked up on her or like she was keeping her watchful eyes on YOU! What a cutie!!

Yeah Brugie, things are speeding up. I have my seat belt on while I try to get ready for PMS x 6. LOL The oldest will be 12 soon and the other are all 2 years behind her and each other. 12??? Where the heck did I lose 12 years? Did you see this from last fall? http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1325309 It's been almost a year already.....

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

OMG Michele, those girls are all just beautiful. You are going to have some real fun when the boys start knocking on the door. They do still knock on doors, don't they? Things have changed so much since my kids were dating age. You should be super proud of that six pack.

Corte Madera, CA

julie, how adorable. how did you get that shot?

michele, they are gorgeous! what a blessing. i wanted to have 6 kids, no kidding. 5 boys, and one girl. i had trouble coming up with just one. he is a blue-light special.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Your GD is just too cute, Julie. I bet you just love her to death!!

Chele, lucky you. What a great kids. I bet they all will be best friends all their lives. What is that saying, "a daughter is a daughter all of her life, but a son is a son until he takes a wife."

Annapet, I think you and I are in big trouble having a son and no girls. LOL. Show us a picture of your 3 year old. I loved that age.

Corte Madera, CA

oh, kell. that saying scares me! lol.

here's my pride and joy wearing a traditional filipino garb.
