I would like to raise some lilies, and I need suggestions about good methods of germinating them, please.
Asiatic lilies: coffee filters? cold treatment?
Some lilies require cold stratification, some do not. You should check one of the databases for the ones you want. Cold stratification, if you are not familiar with it, consists of putting the seeds in plastic bag in a damp--not wet--cone type coffee filter paper in the veggie bin of your refrigerator. It can take up to three months. Some seeds need to be warm first, then cold stratified, then warm again. Some germinate while being cold stratified. You should check your seeds periodically to see if they have germinated. Then put them in your propagator for a few days or a light, warm spot, out of the direct sun for a while until they get bigger. Gradually acclimatize them to the outside and then plant where you want them. They should bloom in two to three years. It is a lot of work and probably better to grow them from bulbs unless you are doing it for the challenge, in which case, party on.
