Square Foot Gardening Part II

Cypress, TX(Zone 9a)

I do have a trellis sticking up over the fence and behind the house. I have not gotten a letter yet. I still have my fingers crossed.

Here is another restriction by the subdivision. No apartments are allowed to be built. I think that is an awesome rule. I don't have anything against apartment dwellers ( I used to live in one). I just don't want them (apartment complexes) in my subdivision. Apartment buildings seem to get run down after 8-10 years and then you have problems with crime, etc.

Here is a link to the website:

The link doesn't want to come up for me here at work - too many firewalls here. I look forward to seeing it later tonight.

I guess it would be hard for apartment dwellers to do SFG, eh? Depending on the size of your balcony or windowsill, it might have to be "square-inch gardening" instead! :-)

When I lived in a high-rise for a few years, we had access to a community garden area nearby - everyone had their own raised beds. I spent all my time on the waiting list for one, but in the meantime it was nice to look down from the apt and see some flowers & veggies instead of just another parking lot.

ok this thread is dieing out, who is starting there's up again or still growing stuff in theirs? I lost everything in my after katrina but i just bought more composted and turned the soil...well and pulled out all the corn that didn't make it. i'm ready to start it up again. i think i'm going to add another 4x4 plot this year.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i am only doing my square foot beds this year. mostly herbs and flowers. i have four 4x4s, 1 9x9 divded into 9 3x3 (approx), and 5 3x3s... think that will be enough LOL

Hi everybody. It's been a while since I've posted. Believe it or not, I'm recovering from brain surgery! I've had to let the gardening go since I can't bend over, but my husband Tom has started planting. He wants to put irrigation in our square foot beds which are 4'x8'. Can anyone give us some tips/advice? Thanks, Margaret

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

well, i am glad you are recoveirng! and hopefully your brain has vastly improved?

good idea your hubby has. there is a thread where drew_n_ corrin shows his irrigation, and tells what he likes and doesn't like, and what he would do different. it may even be the first thread to this series, or it could be the Mittledier thread... i will look.

meanwhile, i am considering drip tape instead of irrigation pipe. it is more movable and flexible, i mean adjustable, well, YOU CAN MOVE IT AROUND AFTER YOU PLACE IT. there, you get my drift! and it releases the water more slowly, and conserves water too. there is one that you can even use with compost tea...

when i find that info, i'll post links here.

tf: Thanks for the info. Anything else you can find will be greatly appreciated. Tom will research as well. I am recovering very well, but as far as my brain being vastly improved.....I'll ask my family for their opinion :) Margaret

Hi, I'm going to be starting an SFG this spring. It's actually about 2' by 'very long'. lol I've got a side yard that I spared from the landscaper to put it in. The yard itself is about 10 feet by 20 feet if I remember correctly. And the garden is going around the perimeter. The only problem I can forsee is it get full sun in the afternoon. We live in Reno, NV and it get's pretty hot here, so I'm hoping it will be ok.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

Sprite~

here's an idea:

You can deal with the full sun by using a trellis at one side of the beds, and plant some fast growing vines there. morning glories, clematis, or indeterminate tomatoes you can start early come to mind. you can put them at the west side of each part of the bed, and still have 18 inches of planting space, or more, through out the whole bed.

TamaraFaye,

I'm going to try some of these as trellis' this year; I've been collecting parts for them since the end of this past summer:

Woody’s Folding Tomato Cages: These sturdy wooden tomato stands are simple to build and easy to store. http://www.motherearthnews.com/do_it_yourself/2005_February_March/Woody_s_Folding_Tomato_Ca%20ges

If the direct link doesn't work anymore. Scroll down the page till you see 'Mother's Library' and click on link that says: Do-It-Yourself - and find the topic there.

Hi all--- Great info on SFG and slug killing! Neat idea, using used margarine containers and slug bait. I've been using beer and it is messy. Ihave tons of 8 & 16 ounce containers I was just getting ready to put in the recycle but now they are destined for a higher calling (slug hotels)! a COUPLE OF QUESTIONS:
1. How often must you empty each hotel?
2. How long does bait last?
3. Does dead slugs deter new slugs from registering (entering) in our hotels?
4. Do I need to weigh down hotels or will the bait be heavy enough to keep it from being blown away?
5.5. Is the smell attractive to small dogs (not mine but my neighbors) - they're noisy sometimes but very cute and playful?
6. Is 36 inch spacing also best for flower beds too?

Another great idea and time saver from DG! Thanks again folks.

Alpha,

I update my slug traps about every 2-3 weeks, dumping out the old stuff/bodies, etc. I put the hotels next to my most prone plants and don't bother with the other areas of flowers that slugs don't eat.

I use empty peanut containers, the ones that are kinda like cardboard, round and squat? I cut 1 inch squares in the sides about half way up. Take off the plastic top, add slug killer and put top back on. This keeps my cats out of the poisen and still kills the slugs.

Yes, depending on the type you buy dogs and cats can get sick and die from eating the stuff.

I cut the bottoms off soda bottles and use those as slug beer saucers. Being clear, they are a little less conspciuous.

Whats left of the bottle can be used as a micro-greenhouse cloche.

Thanks for the idea about keeping the bait dry!

Rick - thanks for bringing this thread back to life.

Oh, wow! Six years later.

Sometimes you find the best info in threads with misleading names.
