I have a few along the front of the fence. The other side of where I have the beans planted. The other small flowers are Prim Rose. I'm not real happy with them.
My Garden is Now Underway
Darrell, these petunias are lovely, but can't think you got what you paid for. Were these seeds pelleted or just tiny hard to see specks? There is a picture on Parks website of their pelleted petunia seeds, I believe under the Purple Wave. I've ordered a couple of times from Parks and been quite satisfied, but never ordered Wave petunias.
One I got was Avalanche. I think it's the right one. It was a small seed, like pepper.
I ordered Dolce Petunia's too. One was suppose to be red, another was to be yellow, and another one was suppose to be, (i don't remember) I know I ended up with all Double Pink. :)
The pelleted seeds, I don't remember what I ordered.
I've always been happy with Park Seeds. I will be buying most of my things from the next year.
And, I'm glad you posted a message. Thank you, once again, for the Poppy Seeds. :) I remembered who sent me the seeds after I saw your name. Don't they look great?
This is the first year I ever grew anything from seed. You'll have to forgive me if I'm sort of over happy about it all.
That's OK Darrell, it's nice to have enthusiastic people among us. Who's counting? (19) Don't think we can usually post that many pics at once, but maybe you hit a slow time.
I thought I remembered you saying that you had started Silver Wave petunias along with Old Flower Girl Donna and couldn't figure out why yours were different. Maybe I'm remembering wrong, wouldn't be the first or last time I've done that.
Your journal here at Dave's is great for keeping track of what you've planted each year.
I can't do the Journal here. I've tried.
Some people say they post things like, "what they have", "what they would like to have", and keep track of different things they are working on, plan to do, or want to do.
I can't seem to get mine to work.
Thank you Christine. You know, it's a lot of work, but I love it. I go to bed thinking about it and wake up thinking about it. I'm up by 6AM and outside by 7AM almost every morning.
Sometimes I sit outside in the lawn chair, under a tree, drinking ice tea and watching the bee's going around from one flower to the next, or the occasional humming bird. Thinking to myself and smiling, "that's right, you just go from flower to flower and make my vegetables grow." "don't forget to tell all your bee freinds you've found thousands of flowers to polinate." (This is what happens to people when they get older and who don't get much company, well, at least it happens to me. :)

LOL, sounds like you have the perfect mindset to be a good Gardener, Darrell. Glad to hear you are enjoying your Garden. That is how it should be, and you have every right, too. Everything looks fantastic. Your lettuce and other veggies look so healthy. I am envious of your peppers and cukes. My Golden Peppers are just getting started after flowering recently and my cukes are sooo slow. Supposed to be 37 C here today, maybe after the past few days of high heat, they'll finally have a surge. And your Petunias are very nice. I see the Silver is coming along nicely. I knew they would. I am so pleased with mine. Every pot is florishing. I will have to take a photo of all of them again soon along with my Pink Wave. I have ruffled petunias very similar to yours as well. I realized too, that I have never taken a photo of my Vegetable Garden. I just put in my second round of Peas yesterday. should have the next flush for picking by the end of August or mid September.
Thanks for sharing Darrell.
Your garden is growing by leaps and bounds Darrell........it looks FANTASTIC !!! Ü
Yes, I agree, everything looks great Darrell. I'm really jealous of your green peppers. I'd be embarrassed to show a picture of mine. What few leaves they have are really yellow and they haven't grown much. It's probably because I only recently planted them outside. We had such a cold, wet spring that I was afraid to plant them out. Oh well.
I was wondering about how your roadside stand is doing Darrell. Do you have lots of things for sale yet? You must be having to sell the radishes and lettuce at least by now. And are you getting much business? I hope so.
I sent you some red and purple poppies. They're looking good.

Sandy,
My peppers have a story behind them.
I started them from seed in the seed house. (heated) They grew and grew. Looked great. About a month before they were to go outside, they started dropping leaves. I didn't pay too much attention untill they really started to drop heavy. I looked and looked for insects and couldn't see any.
It wasn't till about 3 weeks of falling leaves, that I saw the web in the plants. I had an infestation. Big time. I sprayed them all with soapy water and put them outside. I sprayed them for about 3 or 4 days while outside. They lost almost every leaf. To be honest, I didn't think they would do anything, but I kept working with them and now they're producing for me. A lot of my peppper plants look sick, but they aren't. They just lost their leaves and have plenty of peppers growing on them. By the way....I saved the seeds for my peppers from peppers I bought from the grocery store last year and I saved the seeds of my Spahgetti Squash, and Acorn Squash from the grocery store last year. They're all doing fine. :)
As for the roadside stand......I haven't started it yet. I have sold lettuce and radishes to people I know. I ate a lot of lettuce and radishes too. lol
I just finished the second coat of paint on the boards that will be out front with, "Fresh Vegetables" printed on it. I hope I can print it well enough that people can read it. I'm not very good at that kind of thing.
I've got the tarp for my roof, hooks to hook it down with. I bought some buckets that I'll put the posts down in and then cement the posts in place. That way, if the wind comes up, which it will, I will still have a stand left. The weight of the cement will hold it down.
I'm working on it and hope to have it up and running in a week or so. I'll post a picture of it when I've got it going.
Yes, Thank you very much for those Poppy seeds. They are beautiful. I never grew things like that before. I'm partial to the that lavender one. I've got to save seeds from them. I'd like a great big area full of lavender coloured poppies. Like a field of poppies. It would have to look spectacular.
Darrell:
I think you can get 'stick-on' letters for your sign that are waterproof. Or maybe trade a local artist some of your veggies for a really original sign.
~m
Well, whatever you did to those peppers it certainly seems to have worked because they look pretty good in the pictures Darrell. I'm glad you like the poppies. I have a bunch of volunteers blooming in my vegetable garden again this year. I like them too.
I figured you'd have had to start doing something with the radishes because they come so much quicker than everything else. I think that cybercrone has a good idea for you to trade an artist some vegetables for a nice sign. The greenhouse/produce market near me has some of the most beautiful signs that they put out in front of the store next to the road. They're obviously painted by an artist. I think they're very inviting and attractive. I look forward to seeing the pictures of your stand up and running next week.
Sandy
That's a great idea cybercrone. I'm going to check around today. It would be great if someone would trade.
Sandy,
I'm a little bit nervous about opening up my stand, especially with only radishes and lettuce. I don't think anyone would stop for either one of those things. However, I "do" think they would buy some if they were here for their major reason for stopping, like buying tomatoes, or corn, or beans. Also, when I say, "nervous", I mean, I'm a little scared. Like a new job, I guess. I've lived alone for a lot of years and sometimes being around a lot of people makes me nervous and I get panic feelings or anxiety to leave or get away from them as fast as I can. I'm going to do my market though. I'll work through it. I have too.
Maybe I shouldn't put personal things in here, but I did. I'm too old to care if it's right or wrong.
Darrell
Hey Darrell. You can put anything you want to and feel comfortable with in here as far as I'm concerned. I'll be rooting for you - running the market may end up being one of the most rewarding things you've ever done. The sense of personal accomplishment alone will be tremendous. --Ginny
Thank you Ginny. You made me feel good. :) (and greatful)
Well, I called a guy that does signs. I had a list of people to call, and the first one I talked with, "Hey why not? We all gotta eat." So, I'm taking my boards over to him along with some radishes, Romain Lettuce, and other lettuce, (probably a grocery bag full).
I wouldn't have thought of asking someone to help me with this sign in a million years. Thanks again, cybercrone.
Darrell
Hey that's great about the sign Darrell. I'll look forward to seeing a picture of it when it's done. --Ginny
Going into any new venture is a bit nerve wracking for everyone I think Darrell. I'm sure it'll be easier after the initial day or two after you open the stand. Hopefully you won't have everyone coming at the same time.
I agree that it's a good idea to wait until you have at least a few more things to offer. Do you have any other crops that are close to being ready? You can always sell some of your onions as bunches of green onions when they're small. Are you going to sell any of your pots of flowers? I think those are always popular.
I'm glad you found somebody to help you with the sign. You'll have to share a picture of it. One of the popular roadside stands near here has small signs with the names of different vegetables on each one. They hang out the ones with the vegetables they have available each day. I think they have those little hooks on the top and bottom edges so they can be changed easily each morning.
Sandy
Sandy,
I don't have anything right now that is ready, other than the lettuce. In a week or a week and a half, I think I'll have Green & Yellow Summer Squash.
That would make it:
Red Radish
White Radish
Lettuce (if it doesn't bolt or start going to seed)
Green Summer Squash
Yellow Summer Squash
I have a few Cherry Tomatoes that are about the size of a nickle, and the regular tomatoes are about the size of tennis ball. It won't be much longer for those.
I think I know what you mean by those signs that show the different kinds of vegetables. There is a place in Indiana that sells individual signs like that. They are on wire frames and stakes and the sign of the vegetable can be replaced on the wire frame with a different picture, or the entire thing can be pulled up and a new sign put in it's place. They're not too expensive either. They also make banner's that you can put up. They look good and if this wasn't my first year, I'd have a few. But, I'm waiting to make a little money back from the money I put into this adventure. If the stand fair's well, I'll invest a little more money. Worst case senario, I eat a lot. :)
That's a good idea Darrell. You don't want to spend more than you have to until you see how it's going to work out.
What I'd really like, is a Greenhouse.
After searching high and low for a company that sells Greenhouses, sending for catalogs, in the US and here, all over Canada, I found a place in Amherst, NS, about 2 hours from here.
I was at the Hardware Store buying a few things for the stand and while I was talking to one of the salesman, he mentioned that I might talk to a guy down the road who has 3 or 4 Greenhouses. He said, "I don't know if he sells Greenhouses or not, but he just built a new one and he might be able to tell you who to contact." Well, that's how I found out that there is a company right here in my backyard.
While talking to John, at "John's Greenhouses", he told me I would be the only one that he knows of in the area that is selling vegetables. Everyone else is selling flowers, plants, tree's, etc. That same thing applies to another Greenhouse about 20 minutes away. She calls her Greenhouses, "Farmer Browns". She sells flowers, bedding plants, etc., but no vegetables. Those two places of business are 40 minutes apart. I'm in the middle of the two.
As for me selling flowers, (I think someone asked me if I was going to sell flowers),.......Yes, and no.
I especially like "Cut Flowers". If I can grow "Carnations", "Baby's Breath", "Daisy's", "Astors", and "Glads", then the answer is yes. I'd sell the Glads for so much a stem, and make individual groupings of the others. Put them in a 5 gallon bucket, and sell them that way. If I can grow "Petunias", I might sell some hanging baskets. I mean, I would have them hanging in the Garden Stand, and if someone wanted to buy one, I'd sell it. But the main reason I'd have them at the Garden Stand, would be to make it look nice. Me and Petunia's don't get a long, I guess. Although they look ok, they aren't what I ordered and I think it's because I didn't do what I was suppose to do, at one point or the other. I've got "Striped" ones now. Who knows where they came from. lol
Darrell
That's great luck regarding the greenhouse Darrell. So....are you going to get one? It sounds like your vegetable stand is going to be in a good location with no other competition too close by. Good plan to pretty much stick to the veggies with other flower plant sellers around. They probably wouldn't be selling cut flowers though.
Hey Darrell, your Sweet Peas are lookin' mighty fine! Their siblings growing in my garden are looking good as well. Grew very tall this year 7' or so. Love the smell of them too. :Donna
