Here we go!

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

What a nice pond! what is that saying, silk purse from a sow's ear? so nice of the old owner to leave it for you, it would have been a shame to have filled it. Looking forward to pics of it filled with beautiful lillies and reeds...

Thanks Viv! Don't know about having any lilies with all that shade, but I do have some water plants Staci gave me (can't recall the name right now...) and a few "rushes" one tag says corkscrew rush and the other well, I can't recall that right now either. It's too early and I've had no coffee! But they are all in a huge container of water at my front door now. Darn. I will have to find some plants to put it in when I move those plants to the pond. Oh well, I'm sure I'll manage to find SOMETHING to plant in there. Ha! So how is your sod doing?

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

The sod is in. Looks kinda like a green patch quilt? I've been watering off and on, even with the rain. Its so nice not to have dirt patchs. I think I can just pull weeds and dress the garden for awhile, no major projects lurking round the corner now.

Oh baby! You look so sexy in all that rubber muck gear! LOL

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Where's the mosquito net hat??? I bet they were grinnin' and lickin' their lips when they saw you step into that mess. lol

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Chele- I'm so hot I can hardly stand myself! LOL! You really had to get the full effect in person. You can't see it so well in the picture, but those are Abe's boots and they are HUGE on me. So watching me tromp around in them while saying "oh man... oh my God this is nasty... blah! Get off of me you freaking bugs!" was quite amusing.

On that note Terrie- believe it or not I did not get ONE bite... and normally those things LOVE to suck my blood. I used this DEET product that they gave in the Army and I swear you can see the tumors form on your skin when you rub it on. Ok, just kidding, but it really is a very high percentage. You can't buy it commercially. I'm not kidding, if I was pregnant I wouldn't use it. And I washed it all off IMMEDIATELY. But I put that on, then put on clothes. So they really did stay off. I put regular bug spray in my hands and patted it on my face just to make sure. So I went in prepared!

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

I meant to ask you if those were Abe's service boots you were muckin' around in. Wish they sold the stronger stuff on the market, and just labeled it "Extra Strength -- Use at Your Own Risk" cause I don't think any of the regular stuff works very well on our Texas sqeeters! I spray myself every morning when I go out before work and as soon as I get home, but they still nibble on me.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Well this is a green tube that just says "DEET." I think it's an FDA thing since it is linked to cancer and birth defects. I don't use it all the time. I just use the Deep Woods OFF when I'm in the yard. But like you I still get a few bites. On that note, you want to know what works?! Those propane skeeter tanks! Our neighbors got one and I didn't know it. So we were in their backyard and I realized I had forgotten to put on bug spray. Then I realized I hadn't gotten a single sting. Then they pointed out the new contraption by their back fence. I was SO impressed! It covers a full acre, but any sort of obstruction (like a house) reduces it's effectiveness. So it didn't work as well in their front yard as it did in the back yard, but it was still tons better than at our house. And the neighbors on each side of them said they felt like they should contribute some $ towards it since it was keeping their yards skeeter free too. So yeah, I'm sold. If you have a couple hundred bucks to spend, but didn't know if they really work, I'll tell you now that they DO!

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Yeah, I have heard that. Maybe I'll ask for that for my birthday!

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

And I will tell Abe that's what he wants for HIS birthday next month. Ha!

BTW- went to Calloway's at lunch. And while they do have a huge selection of various sizes of glazed ceramic pots, they did not have what I am looking for. :( I am one step closer to a 2nd drive to Forney! Ha!

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Now you know why they can charge $189. lol

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Yep! And from the prices I saw at Calloway's, if they DID have the same thing it would have been close to the same price anyway. I'm an accountant Terrie, of course I have to go to great lenghts to make sure I am getting the best deal. Ha!

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, you don't have to be an accountant to go to great lengths to get the best deal. lol

I know it's been a while. Since I last posted, we patched the holes with cement and I sealed the entire thing with the liquid epdem liner (Liquid Roof). Good lord that was expensive!!!!!!! After it cured for 4 days (dries white) I recleaned the pond and filled it up. I took the hose and timed how long it took to fill a 5 gallon bucket. Then I timed how long it took to fill the pond. Using my limited algebra skills, I got 335 gallons. Smaller than I thought it would be, but the lowest end of the pond is quite a bit lower than the higest end. I mean the plant shelf doesn't even get submerged all the way around! But that's a good thing b/c I put some non-bog plants on the edges that stay dry and we are thinking about maybe having a turtle. Maybe. Anyway, my husband (math geek) rechecked my figures on his fancy graphing calculator and got the same answer I did. So it's 16 feet long by 9 feet wide and 2 feet deep (this is the longest, widest and deepest points) and 335 gallons. The only thing I don't have yet is the urn/fountain b/c I have to simma down on the $$ part of this for a while. I did get more plants yesterday, oh yeah, and a pump/filter combo. So the fountain and then just letting the plants fill in is all there is left to do. So I am starting a new thread with my "after" pictures if you're interested.
