Jacarandas are blooming!

Spring Valley, CA(Zone 10a)

Even though it's a little messy, I still love this tree. Here's mine! Where's yours?

Nice,

we have three that all froze really hard last winter. Each are back, but in total recovery. I don't expect any blooms this year. Your's is really nice indeed.

Well, that's it. You've broken my heart. I never see those in Northern California. It's fabulous. Any chance it would grow here?

Well Zuzu, drdon says he has three of them and he lives in a half-zone colder than you. I don't see why not. Actually, where I'm at I have a blooming seedling from this mother plant just on the other side of the driveway. This tree sprouts babies all over the yard, so I have to pull them up when I find them. They are pretty vigorous trees. As you can see, this one is just starting to leaf out for the summer. (This is a 3-4 year old seedling from the previous tree I posted)

hiya Zuzu,

RWhiz is right about us growing Jacarandas. Right now they're growing...lol. We almost lost them this winter however. We had several dry evenings in the teens last winter and the trees got toasted pretty good. I've seen healthy ones in colder areas than ours and that's why we are trying them. They love the heat here and obviously in Spring Valley down in San Diego County. If Sebastapol gets hot enough in the summer, your mild winters would be fine for them.

We had them at the coast in our old house in Cardiff/ Encinitas and they did well but didn't bloom as well as those inland from us.

I don't know if you get hard frosts there, but if you do start with a larger plant.

Ron, your trees are marvellous.

Ron and DrD, you have inspired me. I'm going to grow one of these. It's exquisite, and the temperatures here have never dipped into the teens or even below 25. I get a few mornings of frost each year, just enough to make the peonies bloom.

Super!

Good luck with your new trees.

I drove down to San Diego last weekend and was absolutely charmed by all the Jacarandas in bloom.

My jacaranda flowers are all over my grass, but I get alot of compliments on it!

Alameda, CA(Zone 9b)

Jacarandas do beautifully in Alameda, so there is definitely hope for growing them in No. Cal. We do dip below freezing occasionally, although not that often. Most of the local trees are in full bloom right now, but mine (about four years old) is just starting. I think the key is sandy soil, Zuzu. If you have that, it's definitely worth a shot. Good luck!

Arroyo Grande, CA

They are beautiful right now. Very messy and can get quite large and unruly, but beautiful I planted a bunch from liners in the common area last year. It will be a while but they should provide a spectacular display this time of year.

I mowed my yard yesterday and it was so pretty and green, now it's pretty and purple...5 minutes after I mowed it, it was purple. I especially love picking those purple flowers off the floor in the house!
