Ok, the selection at the local nurseries just isn't cutting it. I have seen places on HGTV shows that people shop in and it's nothing but pots- ceramic, stone, terra cotta, various shapes and sizes. Is there anything like this in the Dallas area?! I have a very specific item I want to make my pond fountain out of. It needs to be a tall, skinny urn and I want cobalt blue. There is one in my office as one of our many decorations... TWO of them in fact. I am about to go off the deep end and just sneak one of them out of here. Ha! Just kidding. But I really would like to find a cool pottery type shop around here.
Thanks!
Jamie
Pots and urns in the DFW area?
I have found gardenridge on I 20 Arlington to have a few good ones. The big Walmart on Carrier and I20 also has a few good ones but they are plastic . . . Check out Big Lots to I have found the DFW Big Lots to have lots of Cobalt colored pieces. Hope this helps - Mitch
Thanks Mitch-
I have not had much luck with Wal-Mart. I was thinking about Garden Ridge just the other day as a possible option. Big Lots- there's an idea! I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestions!
I was going to suggest Garden Ridge but didn't know if they had them in Big D.
They can be expensive, but Calloway's has a good selection. They have the tall skinny urn type kind of like what we saw at the Neil Sperry Garden Show. Occasionally they will put their stuff on sale or a coupon will come in the mail. I just bought a 16" tall glazed pot about 2 weeks ago with a 30% off coupon. It was in one of those Coupon Mailers that come stuffed in a blue envelope.
Besides that there are a couple places out in Forney (antique row on Hwy 80) that have alot of pottery, but not as much of it is glazed. The place by Philbecks (first area on the south side of 80) and possibly the last place on the North side, but I think they have more garden art than pots.
hi,there is an open air stall on Golden Triangle, anout 1.5 miles off 35w which sells alsorts of varieties f pots. I think they are direct from Mexico, I spotted some deep blue glaze on some as I drove past yesterday. No ide about price as I haven't stopped yet.
Carol
If the man can order direct from Mexico, they can make what you want. We do that with a dealer here in the small town of Alvin, Tx.

Now I know my problem guys.... I don't go out in the boonies if I can help it! :) Step OUT of the city Jamie, step OUT of the city!!!! Ha! Thanks for the tips guys. Staci- maybe we can hit "antique row" one Saturday. Terrie too if she's reading this. She did tell me Calloway's has a good selection and they put them all half off in the fall so maybe I'll wait until then if I don't find anything soon. And now I have a good reason to actually OPEN those blue coupon mailers instead of just tossing them huh?
Hitting Antique Row would be great. It's been a while since I have been out there and it was with Ronny, who is not the best shopper. :)
A man not being a good shopper?! You don't say! Ha! But we have to give them credit for being willing to go out to places like that with us at all. :)
Well my weekends are open for the most part so just let me know when you want to go.
Jamie:
There is a great place in Plano that has Mexican pottery. I don't remember the name of it, but it's right there off of 75 just past the Parker exit on the east side. You can't miss it. It's right next to Mario's Chiquita restaurant in a red barn, and their goods are mainly outside. That's also where the farmer's market is. Oh, here, I just found the name. Amigos Imports at Fairview Farms. They have lots of great urns, pots, chimneas, many different sizes and shapes. I can't remember if they have cobalt blue since it's been quite a while since I've visited -- in fact, you've inspired me to make a trip -- but it seems to me that they did have glazed items. I bought two huge urns the last time I was there, four foot tall, and the price was very reasonable.
Don't know if they'll have what you're looking for, but you might find something else while you're there instead! And perhaps Plano isn't that far of a drive for you.
Stormy
Thanks Stormy! No, Plano isn't that far. I will definitely go check out that place! I am meeting Staci (Sweezel) out near Forney this afternoon to check out "antique row." Maybe I'll find what I'm looking for, maybe I won't. But I think I will probably find a new "junk" place to shop. :) Next weekend I'll hit Amigos Imports.
You might try Jackson Pottery on Lemon Ave across from Love Field. I bought concrete stain from them, but was amazed at the selection of pots, "hence the name". AND it's not in the boonies!
mel
Oh, I forgot about them. They do have a really good selection. It's also pricey, but it's a good selection, plus the have plants too!
Texasgarden, I'm with you--OPENING the mailers now!! Plan on stocking up when Calloways has their 1/2 off sale in the fall too! By the way, the Grapevine store currently has all of their J&P 3 gal. roses on sale for $5! And, no, they're NOT crummy!
Anyway, pardon the sidebar--another place that I've seen some of the big, stone planters, like I see in amongst city plantings, is the stone quarry place on Davis. Are you familiar w/Southlake Boulevard? It's on Davis right off of S. 1709 (SB), up from the Plant Shed.
Kathleen in Trophy Club
Thanks Kathleen-
I live in North Oak Cliff so I don't get to that part of DFW very often. I was going to just b/c I wanted to check out the Plant Shed, but then I heard they are kind of expensive anyway. Well I will drive to that area if there is a pot place... wait, that sounds kind of bad huh? LOL!
Mel- I work about 10-15 minutes from Love Field so I could check out Jackson Pottery on my lunch hour. Hmm... sounds like a good Monday or Tuesday afternoon outting! :)
Well, I did find EXACTLY what I wanted with Staci this afternoon at the place in Forney. But it was $189!!! So I will bite the bullet and go back for it if I don't find anything else. But I feel like I need to check out a few more places just so I can say I honestly did comparison shop before dropping that kind of $$! I just have a feeling I won't find a glazed pot that size any cheaper. :(
Jamie
Tell you my secret - I go to Laredo 6 hours south good weekend trip. Right there on the US side are thousands of pots, and garden things for really really low cost. You can cross the border for even lower cost - and cheap pina coladas! I try to get all my pots there they are ready to go and they bicker with you... gas one night hotel and the pot might be cheaper then the 189! You can bet I drink more down there then I bring home in pots but hey it saves money right? ? ?
Thanks 75154. If I ever have another reason to go down that way then I will for sure check out the pots! :)
I just thought of another place, but I might not remember all of the details... but here goes.... Moreno's Tile or Moreno's Pottery. It's on the west side of dallas, south of I-30, west of spur 408. Hope those are correct. She has lots of imports. We used to buy mexican tile (Saltillo tile) from her, and one time, she sold me a few pots when I was there (years ago), but the prices were to die for!
Maybe you could look up the address and phone number.... wish I had more info, but just thought it might be worth the digging!
mel
I found it.... but call and see if they have anything close to what you're looking for! "Habla espanol recommended..."

TXMel - the link for me does not work....
Don't forget about Hobby Lobby. There's always one closer than Laredo.
but not the fun you will find on the border!
Guess what Mel? Per Yahoo maps that's about 7 miles/14 minutes from my house and it's a straight shot! So even if she doesn't have what I'm looking for I'm sure it will be worth a visit! I can get my MIL to call for me since she can habla espanol! :)
I did check out Garden Ridge yesterday and while they did have lots of glazed pottery for 30% off, and they did have the shape and color, they did NOT have the tall ones. I need one that's 3-4 feet tall. They did have big, as in wide, pots but not the tall skinny kind. :( I am afraid Hobby Lobby will be the same way but I will check it out.
Thanks for the tips guys!
Oh but Mitch, you just don't know how much fun a girl can have in Hobby Lobby!! ;)
My wife keeps tell me that .... I still dont see it, I think if I can shop with a drink in my hand - now that is shopping...
Just saw this thread. Sorry I missed the Forney trip, girls. I love going out there! We only returned from Mexico on the 11th. Jamie, the best selection of Cobalt blue I have found is at Calloways. Jackson's usually doesn't carry glazed pots but they do have a great selection of cement and cast stone. You can make the Calloway's on Greenville at Walnut Hill on your lunch hour -- I do it all the time. :-)
Wish you could have joined us. We had a nice lunch also with me telling her about my unorthodox family and her sharing about her friends and family who are in similar situations. Hmmm... maybe good you did not join us since we were being gossips. ;-)
It was good that the place by Philbecks had what she was looking for. We did a little more looking around and, of course, then it got too hot to do much more looking since we'd seen all the pots and we were off.
Well, believe me, I have some pretty good family stories, too. lol So. . . Jamie, did you go back and buy it? Did you take pictures of it?
Staci- Is it still gossiping if you are talking about yourself?! :) I have my own messed up family stories, but we would need another afternoon to cover that topic. LOL!
Terrie- I didn't bring my camera so I didn't get a picture of it. But I am going to hit Calloways and that place by my house that Mel mentioned. Though I'm sure they will be limited on the glazed pottery selection too. After I check those 2 places I will go back and get the pot. We will have to make the Forney trip when it cools down again and go to all those shops. I just couldn't handle the heat! :) But since Abe said he was ok with me spending that much $ on the urn, I figured I should honor his request and not buy it until we are at that stage. Right now we still need to excavate some dirt from around the pond b/c th e soil line is higher than the edge of the pond in some places so when it rains dirt runs into the pond. Then patch the holes, then seal, then get a filter and pump and THEN I can get the fountain going! I have no patience. :)
I hope you had a good time in Mexico!
LOL I know what you mean about an afternoon. Isn't family lovely. Can't live with them, can't live without.
Sounds like you have plenty of work to do. If it wasn't going to be so darn hot this weekend, it might be something you could tackle. There's always getting up at 6am though.
I can get up at 6:00 a.m. and still not get it all done, Staci. Usually I start one project outside and then on my way to get something I need, I see something else that needs to be done and start on that, forgetting what I was working on until a little later. Go back to the original job, forgetting that I was headed out to get something I needed earlier, going back again to find what I needed, see some weeds that must be pulled at this very minute because if I wait, I will forget to pull them later. Then see a totally different project that needs handling, forgetting the original project. I'm doing this all day long so by the end of the day (and we're talking weekend days), I have a lot of different things that are half done and have to start all over again the next day!
Terrie, you just described my typical day in the yard! :) Someone in another thread had a term for it- they said I suffered from the "but firsts." You know, I need to dig out around that fountain, "but first" I really need to fertilize those brugs. Then I go to get the fertilizer and on my way see some weeds so I say well, I'll fertilize those brugs, "but first" just let me pull out a few of these weeds. Ha!
Well, this weekend I WILL get that dirt all dug out- it isn't much and the pond is spotless inside which was the part I was dreading! And Abe is going to patch the holes so that phase will be over. :)
Good for you, Jamie! I can't wait to see your pond finished. I know you will, but just a reminder to take before, after and between photos!
I have already started to chronicle the whole thing in the Water Garden forum. Here is that thread:
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/518725/
Me too! Can't wait to see it finished. :)
Sounds like me too. I do that whole disctracted working thing too and nothing gets 100% done. Of course I am good about doing that in the house too. I will take the watering can in the other room to water a plant and after doing that see that I need to put a book away or something, set the watering can down, and then after putting the book away, I will remember something I need to do in the other room and forget all about bringing the watering can back. I can be a scatter brain and it drives Ronny absolutely crazy. LOL
Yeah, Abe says I have ADHD. :)
It must be a woman thing cause John NEVER does it.
It's Adult Onset A.D.D. Have a wonderful little email joke about it....
Please let us know when you find that perfect Cobalt Blue Pot! That is my favorite color too!
Mel
Well Mel, I did find the perfect pot, technically. I am just trying to see if it exists anywhere else for cheaper. Ha!
