My DH bumped into my Limerock Coreopsis and brokr off two stems, and then I "bumped" into a planter at Outback Steakhose and "accidently" broke off two Fan Flower stems.
Will these root in water or do ya'll think rooting hormone in soil is better?
heather
will these root?
What a happy accident! LOL! Heather, you're a riot.... you get a couple of AV leaves to put up plantlets, and now you may as well be running around with pruners in your hip pocket! *G* I don't know about these two plants specifically, but it's my understanding that in general some stuff will root readily in water, butmost stuff will root in moist potting medium (rooting hormone & some sort of covering to hold in a little extra humidity may both help). And I think most things take longer to root in water, but I try stuff in water anyway just because it's so easy (when it works).
This reminds me of a time we went to a pizza parlor years ago. I didn't know much about plants or what they were.
There was a pitiful wilted forgotten plant in a hanging basket baking in the window. I snipped off a long stem and took it home and put it in wet potting soil. Before long it got roots and started to grow. It turned out to be the prettiest brilliant orange impatiens. I had a lovely sunny window and it flourished there with plenty of water.
I have even rooted zinnias this way.
So I think you could bury parts of the stem by laying it sideways in moist potting soil with or without rooting hormone. I am not sure the fan flower will take, though. But the coreopsis sure will. Just remember to keep it moist since it has no roots to carry moisture to the rest of the plant.
Guess what---- coreopsis root in water! FAST! Wow I was really suprized to see a tiny root forming on the pieces Gonna get them in some soil later today (just too darn hot right now)
And Jill - - I swear I am going to make myself a snachin kit -- complete with a bag of soil, clippers rooting hormonepots and a couple of soda holders from McWendyKing ---LOL!!

I read that some passiflora root easily, just stick in water. Do you think P incarnata is that easy? Have one cutting that stuck in water yesterday. Prob putting into soil this weekend, unless someone tells me otherwise... same treatment that I do for rose cuttings.
Heather, we ALL need to get those kits ready and waiting in our vehicles! I esp liked the "McWendyKing" holders... Maybe I will look at store and see what could put in mine... too. Need gloves too, knowing my history, lol ~ Suzi :)
