Attention anybody who wants Jim Westerfield Mints...

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

ooh! me too please, Barb! and I'll be happy to root any of the ones I get that you don't have... at this rate, I am going to have such a big box to send you!

Lomita, CA(Zone 10a)

If anyone mentions ME doing a mint swap, you had better duck...

Of course, Critter, you can have some too... (honey bee is blooming, by the way...)

I got an email yesterday that my order shipped. Should arrive tomorrow, I suppose? Then, I'll...

1. inspect and post what I got
2. If big enough, take cuttings and start rooting...

Barb

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Next year, I won't be such a newbie, and if my JW mints do well, I'll have a decent selection to start with.... so I could see hosting a swap down the road. Sounds like there will be plenty of swapping & trading of mints this year even without a "real" swap!

I'll do the same when my order from FF arrives.

Victorville, CA

I'd swap some. I've got hazelnut, pear, chocolate, and banana but the banana doesn't look so good right now.

They're here!!! See below, coffee cup for size reference. And, some serious bits to snip.

HOWEVER, being the idiot I am, I thought I ordered Sister Julies, even though I clearly didn't list it above. ARGH! Sorry folks!

BUT, I did get all the ones I actually ordered so if anyone needs some rooted let me know...

Barb... the idiot!

I got two sister julie's winter green, but it didn't come in the mail today, so if it doesn't get here tomorrow the person who's watering my plants this weekend is going to have to take care of it for me. I think it will be here tomorrow though. they emailed me and sai d it was coming. Barb I didn't get the jim's candy lemon lime one, I could send some of the wintergreen for the lemon lime.

kathy

I am going to start rooting all I can off of my plants, in anticipation of another Seeds of Hope sale. I'll send you some of "jessie's" if you want them...LMK

I'm so curious about these mint flavors. BassetMom do they really smell like their names??

Lomita, CA(Zone 10a)

Yes and no, but I have MS and it affects my sense of smell. Also, when smelling ten in a row... they all sort of blend. My office now has mints and scented geraniums, potpourri ingrediants drying and other herbs drying....

The sweet pear is definitely sweeter than minty but still a bit minty, for example. Marshmallow is quite sweet but not at all minty (IMHO). Marilyn's culinary isn't very minty either, more savory? Candy pops is rather funky, not minty. Candied Fruit is indeed very fruity. Mint Patty is a very icy mint smell. Fruit salad is definitely more mint than fruit. I didn't really get the berry in Wild Berry until I tasted a leaf, and then its more of an "overtone" than a taste.

The differences are subtle, IMO... I'm wondering if they would be more obvious in a tea, for example...

Barb

Southern, United States

I would think they would be more distinctive in a tea or something hot. The heat would probably make the scent stronger and more obvious. It just amazes me how something green can smell so good! I bet walking into your office is like walking into perfume store with all the scents going on. It must confuse the nose lol :)

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Barb, I'll pass on the jesse's pear, thanks, though

Lomita, CA(Zone 10a)

Princess...since my husband's least favorite smell in the world is mint, he is less than thrilled with the smell in the office at the moment. Especially because I have two harvests of peppermint drying too...

Okay, Kathy...

Barb

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

My mints arrived!

Looks like I can take cuttings from some right away, but others seem a bit potbound or maybe just shocky from the trip. I'll try to post a picture tomorrow. I'll take another sniff or two as well & try to describe my impressions.

Kathy_ann, I did get a Jim's Candy Lemon Lime, and I'd be happy to get some to you... it's one of the "shocky" ones though, so it may be a couple of weeks before I can get cuttings.

Barb, I wish you could pipe some of that scent in your office down here -- yum!

Coventry, RI(Zone 6a)

Are they still offering the discount? I must get some of those into my beds! So many plants, so little time.....

-Lu

Denver, CO(Zone 6a)

The deal goes on to July 22. Put in the code davesgarden.
Are you sure you want mint in your beds? They will take over everything. I am growing mine in pots. If you do plant in beds you'll be trying to remove it for years and years and years......

Coventry, RI(Zone 6a)

Well, I have this incredible back field. I clean out, turn over, plant, mulch, and control with the mower. :) I have so much space, and so little variety. Mints are perfect for out there. The smell is amazing as you mow. Someone put some in over 40 years ago on this property, and the little bits are still here and there.

Lomita, CA(Zone 10a)

Don't forget GardenWatchdog if you're happy with your order. I was the only one to rate them so far.

Barb

Denver, CO(Zone 6a)

It will be great for that lululocks. I have mine all potted up and going nicely.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I rated them yesterday BassetMom. So now there's two. Their only two.

Paradise, TX(Zone 8a)

Got my mint yesterday! They were so nice to me-they refunded part of my money and included a shipping refund for 2 plants that I had ordered that were out of stock and then sent me an email to let me know what they had done. Got a lot to keep me busy! When I get my co-op order for heucheras I'll be set!
happy gardening!
darmadoll

Lomita, CA(Zone 10a)

darmadoll, what does teh oregano thyme mint smell like? Could you take cuttings and root them for me? I'd be happy to trade for something I have that you don't, or for some other plant you need...

Barb

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Barb, Kim (BlueKat76) got the oregano thyme mint when I ordered, and she promised to root cuttings as soon as it puts on a little new growth. I'll share and include some when I send the swap box! I'll go make a note of it now. :-)

Oh, and the scent is very herbal.... not sure it quite smells like either oregano or thyme, but it's interesting, and quite pungent. Kim plans to have fun experimenting with it in the kitchen!

Lomita, CA(Zone 10a)

Yum... see my answer to your question about Ellie on the SG thread. This could be good for that...

And, girl, you better just drive that ol' box up here with Karen when she comes to help me!

Barb

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5a)

I sure wish that I had room for some more mints. I would like to have taken advantage of this great offer. Right now I just have a peppermint and a chocolate mint in my little herb garden. I have them in the ground in pots with the bottoms removed. I haven't had any problems with them spreading.

I'm so glad to be a member at DG. I'm learning a lot from all you experienced gardener's. Maybe one day I won't be so cranky. ;-)

Mark

Victorville, CA

So did anybody actually get any of the Julie's Wintergreen? I think everybody ordered it but nobody actually got it in their order when it arrived. I wonder if it's hard to grow or something because they run out of it so quickly.
-Juli

Lomita, CA(Zone 10a)

Well, Mark, aka cranky, I'm rooting some cuttings of the ones I received (listed above). If you want some, let me know...

BArb

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I got Sister Julies Wintergreen. It doens't look too good though. If it shapes up later, I'll let you know.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5a)

Thanks Barb. I really appreciate that you'd do that for me. However, at this particular time I don't have any room for them. The little space that we have as an herb garden has quickly filled up. My wife is wanting me to make the herb area bigger sometime soon so we can add a lot more stuff. We went and purchased some dill that I need to find a place for. So much work and so little time. My Mantis tiller is down right now with the parts on backorder. I'll be darned if I'm going to break my back turning the soil over with a spade. That would really make me cranky.

Anyway, thanks again for the offer. I'll have to keep you in mind for when I get around to making the area bigger.

Coventry, RI(Zone 6a)

Heya Mr. Cranky! (my friend Pat uses the names Kermudgeon, and Kermidgit, you make me think of him, LOL) Don't know if you have one/have tried it yet, but my GardenClaw is the perfect mini version of a tiller. If the spot is too small to bother with a power tool (3x3 or less), it makes fast work of it, probably less than dragging the tiller down, starting, using, cleaning, etc. Put mints in pots if you have groomed beds, Mobi's concern is well founded. I used to have mint in them, but no more.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5a)

Lulu, that's funny that I make you think of your friend. Although I love to garden it can make me really cranky at times when things don't go my way. I don't have a GardenClaw but my brother-in-law does. He really likes it. I've tried it and I like it too. That will probably be one of my next purchases.

I got a question. If you grow mint in pots, could you overwinter them in the garage? Our garage on the coldest day is around 40F. I thought about growing some mint just in pots but I don't want to replace them every year.

Coventry, RI(Zone 6a)

I don't see why not. I had purchaced a mint last year, forgot about it, found it in the spring, planted it, and and now its a big 6 inch mound. Time to move it already....

Lomita, CA(Zone 10a)

Mark, this was discussed above at one point. I am going to overwinter my potted hybrid mints in the shed so I don't lose them. My peppermint, orange mint and chocolate mint are in the ground but the others will go inside...

Barb

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I thought I'd bump this thread up... I overwintered my mints in pots against the south foundation, burying the pots in a mound of mulch for good measure. I noticed that most of them are putting up a little new growth already! *Hamster Dance*

I'll pull them out of the mulch soon and hope their tags are intact so I can be sure of their identification.... With a little luck, I should have cuttings to share & trade down the road!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Too Cool Jill! I hope mine survived also. Maybe we can trade sometime. Mine aren't showing any growth yet, but it's early here for anything to show growth. I've had mine mulched, and under a bed of snow some of the winter. We've had an unusually mild winter, so I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I lost a few i'd love to replace, others have started coming back, the ones in pots are taking longer to come back, but I"ve just planted them all in the ground yesterday, and with a little more luck LOL they should be coming around soon too.

My grapefruit mint really is puttering around, and banana I think maybe gone, I did get some banana in 4 in pots before winter will have to save a couple of those for myself LOL

kathy

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

Im glad this thread was bumped...Kathyann I bet your gardens are just sprouting all over the place..I cant wait for mine to just show some green...zone 5/6 just doesnt do anything for awhile but with thems in the 60s yesterday I run out and look for signs...Judy

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Joan, I'll be happy to send you whatever extra sprouts I have when I get those daylilies to you.... I'll Dmail you when I'm dividing the lilies (need to check on the daylily forum & see when the best time is to divide them, but I think spring should work), so remind me then about the mints please. My daylilies aren't popping up yet, but I'm thinking they should start showing up soon.

Judy, hang in there -- spring is just around the corner!! :-)

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5a)

Grapefruit and Banana? Well I'll be darned. I never knew there was such flavors.
