The Epis Are Here, The Epis Are Here!! 2005 PART FIVE
OK......Imma moving down to California!!! Your "Room with a View" shows me how dangerous (to the pocketbook) it is to be a plant lover there but oooooooooooooh my to have an Epi bloom like that would be sooo loverly (now I gots to win me the lottery ;)!!!
Pack your bags and get yourself down here for an Epi fix!!
On second thought, just bring two empty bags and fill them with cuttings. :-)
Candy, you have to give me more details on that cutting you got of Red Sails. It doesn't look like 'typical' epis to me from your pic. Is that just me or does it have a different form? Close up please! :-) The reason I ask is that I adopted a cutting (this one with permission LOL) at the botanical garden near the Dead Sea. The person who let me take knew nothing about it. And I think it may look like the Red Sails cutting in your pic. I sure would love to think that my cutting will produce a lovely flower one day. :-)

Hi Julie -
Just getting ready to go off to bed......hang on and I'll go take a picture. I'm going to be gone most of the day tomorrow.
This has gone waaaaaaaaaay beyond temptation Candy!!!!! You have noooooooooooooo idea what I can get packed into a couple of bags! ;)
LOL Lilypon, I feel sorely tempted myself sometimes. Only the Big Blue keeps me from taking the spontaneous leap ;-)
-Julie
LOLOL....yup that would do it Julie! ;) We are just going to have to buy lots and lots of lottery tickets and then, with our huge winnings, descend on poor unsuspecting Candy! With lots of empty bags and clippers! :^))
hehehehe (evil cackling) ;-)
Oops. Sorry if I made you do that Candy. But I'm very happy upon viewing your pic. Perhaps you can see my big grin all the way there? :-D
-Julie
Oh I can see it because I remember the story of you getting that cutting. (How could they NOT remember what color it was????? LOL)
Ooooooooh my! Ü
Candy, hen I saw the night photo, I assumed QOTN but since they are still blooming the next day, I huess not, or at least none of mine have lasted until the next day.
So, what is it?
Okay I goofed, go to part 4 to see my Oxy DUHHHHHHHH
corky, it looks wonderful coming from what looks like a smll plant!
Oh, goodie... she may have sent me one of those last year!
Candy, that's one fabulous display! All those elegant white blooms just showing off like crazy! :-)
I'm excited, I'm getting some from Antoinette too.
Well, since I have no more blooms to share, I hope you don't mind me sharing my cuttings. See what you all think. Are these some kind of orchid cactus, epi or not? These pics come from 2 different yet similar cuttings I received in two very different locations (one from the manager of the garden center who clipped off an arm from a pot and handed it to me for free...the other is a cutting taken from a huge sprawling plant in the botanical gardens near the Dead Sea. I'm talking 3 meters tall and wide with hundreds of 'tenticles' reaching and twisting in every direction). Each has 3 sided 'leaves'. The cuttings were thick, but all new growth has thin 3 sided leaves.
Cutting #1:
The one in the 1st pic gets full sun. The one in the 2nd pic gets the same light conditions as my epi, ric-rac and holiday cacti (a little dappled sun, otherwise bright shade). Both cuttings are growing just fine. Question is, if they are the same or similar type of plant....which environment is best to get them to flower one day?
-Julie
Hi Julie,
They look like either Hylocereus undatus or Hylocereus polyrhizus to me, also known as Dragon Fruit. Here's a link: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/54131/index.html Hylocereus has very large white flowers which are fragrant and bloom at night. Here is a picture of one that belongs to a fellow gardener named Nate in San Dimas:
Edited to fix spelling of species.

Julie, Mine have gotten very big, very fast. I have two that I got at Home Depot and one that I got as a cutting. I have mine out in full sun. I think full sun is best for the best flowering. They will grow air roots and cling to walls or tree eventually.
Here are two of mine when I first got them. They are now much bigger.
Clare, thanks! That does look like mine. And wow are they pretty blooms...very similar to Epi blooms :-). Do you know what time of year they bloom? I think I'll gradually move the one in shade out to the full sun area with all the other succulents.
Mine have grown very well too. The one I got from the garden center in January (or was it December....) was just one 'limb' about 5-6 inches long. Now it has half a dozen new 'limbs' between 2-6 inches long each. The one I got near the Dead Sea was about 8 inches long and took quite a while to do anything. But suddenly 2 weeks ago I noticed a little 'wart' on the top of it and now it has 2 arms as you can see in the pic. :-)
-Julie
This is the first bloom on this one I've gotten in about 4 years. Does it have a name?
Weegy....that's really pretty! :-) Congratulations! :-)
Pretty in Pink, Weegy!
Nanny Nanny Boo Boo, My epi Oxy is making more blooms. So I guess the one that survived and bloomed was the beginning. The weather here is so awful 5 days of rain. Marilynne
Julie, if I'm not mistaken, Hylocereus can bloom several times a year, but I think summertime is probably the most common time. If you have both Hylocereus undatus and Hylocereus polyrhizus -- and you could have both because of the different places that you got them from -- then they could cross pollinate if they bloom at the same time, and then you could get Dragon Fruit following the flowers. See this link for some really cool pictures: http://www.tropicalfruitnursery.com/dragon/
Weegy, your blooms are lovely! That pink one looks like it could be Padre, but I'm not sure. I love those white blooms also.
I have three Epi Oxy plants that I got from three different sources, and they all have buds! I just got them last year. One is from Logee's; one is from Glasshouse Works; and one if from my pal Don in Kansas. I can't wait to compare them all. I wonder if the flowers will range in size or if they will all look the same.
Thanks guys, it made my day! Padre will do for now Clare, Camarillo, huh? I'm jealous!
Weegy, thanks! There is nothing to be jealous about if you are in Zone 11! I hear Chino is very nice (except for the prison, of course).
darius -
The white Epi is a hybrid whose name I don't know, it is fragrant and generally opens anytime it feels like it....morning, noon or night. :-)
corky - beautiful oxy you posted on part 4! And good news that you are getting more blooms on your mower disaster!
Julie - great cuttings......I've ordered a couple of books on "orchid cactus" type plants, I've decided that I know very little about them, except perhaps how to get them to bloom. :-)
weegy - Lovely pink one! And "Hi" to Momma plant, her babies are doing good!
Not much to report from here, still have lots of the white opening, some large & small pinks. I have a few large buds from the odd-shaped spiny leaves to coming and several large flat leaves with some unknowns that look like they are going to be RED! I knocked one of the largest buds off yesterday......clumsy clumsy clumsy!! But, I stuck it in a bowl of water and it is continuing to develop and open. Looks like it will be all red with perhaps a few inner pink petals. Have no idea where this and the other mostly white/w pink came from.....they've never appeared before and there are no new cuttings that have been added to the mix.
I actually live in Rancho Cucamonga, I have a commercial garden in Chino...ummmmm, Camarillo is very nice. The prison is the only downfall to Chino, you're right...ok, ok back to epi's...I told mama you said hi, Happenstance! Is that one you sent me?
Clare, thanks for that link! I've seen that fruit in the supermarket in the summertime but enver knew what it was. Now I do :-)
Candy, I'm also thinking about getting an orchid cactus book. Let me know which one you get and it you like it. That's so cool that your bud continued to open after it got knocked off. :-) It's lovely too! :-)And don't you know where those new colors came from? Why, the bees of course :-)
-Julie
Well, Now my red Epis getting more buds? I guess they are all "breaking out?" SO awesome. Bye, Me
