Need help selecting clematis for my area....

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

I am getting ready to place my order....probably tomorrow...one from each of the following color groups...

What do you think of the following clematis:

Whites...Huldine, Edith and Henryi

Lilac...Emilia Platter, Prince Charles, Perl d' Azur

Pink/Rose...Princess Diana, Etiole Rose, Ladybird Johnson

Thank-you, Margie

I just planted 'Etoile Rose' and I can't say enough good things about it. I put it in this spring and it's already 4 to 5 feet tall, multiple stems and blooms galore. None of them get afternoon shade but they go from about 4 hours of sun on. All are blooming the same.

They look sparse, but remember that I put them in only this spring. The flowers are about two inches across and one inch from top to bottom, but they are really lovely.

I was going to post these in the plantfiles, but the entry I made hasn't shown up yet.

doss...yes, your etoile rose is lovely...I think I will try for that one....I will be getting some from Chalk Hill, that Shirley will pick up for me when she visits them and I see her next week. I spoke with the manager and he said that although some of the clems are sold out for mail order...they do have some in the nursery. So tomorrow I will write and see which ones they will beable to provide me with.
Thanks for your input...it is really nice!

One caveat. This cultivar is very hardy but is supposed to be suseptible to mildew and I haven't gone through an entire season yet. But in my yard, mildew starts early - none yet although I've sure had it on other plants.

Yes, thank-you...I read that about the mildew suseptibility too...because it has Texensis influence... the sepals look very thick in your last photo! Sweet looking...

They have a very nice substance - and the color variations with the white is good. Even in pretty deep shade the flowers stand out as small as they are. The flowers start out the bell shape where they look pink with a white inside, but as the open they become recurved and the white inside shows. One good thing about them is that a different form goes very well with the large flowering types.

It's supposed to bloom all summer. We'll see.

And you're right. It was only recently reclassified a viticella.

I have bought most of my plants from Chalk Hill Nursery but I just bought a few from Joy Creek nursery. If you call them, they are very helpful about selecting clematis culitvars. I just asked for cultivars to grow with roses in certain colors and they steered me away from what I had picked because it would have smothered the roses. I haven't received my clematis yet, but they get an A+++ in customer service.

Good to know...I will have to check them out too!

Something funny...at the AHS regional convention this past week-end, 2 gals from OR recommended Gail Austin for clematis...it turns out that she is the owner of Joy Creek! They couldn't say enough good things about her! Please let me know how your package turns out! BTW...they are sold out of Etiole Rose!

Chalk Hill has it in stock. Their plants are fabulous. It's where I bought my etoile rose.

What did you decide to get? And I'll be happy to let you know about the clematis from Joy Creek - when they get it here. They did tell me it would take a couple of weeks because their season is so busy right now.

doss...I have an e-mail written to Chalk Hill, but got no response yet. I asked if they would have Huldine, Emilia Plater and Princess Diana. They do have Etoile Rose...So now I just have to see what they say about the others. The others are not available for mail order.

I wrote an email to chalk hill a week ago and they haven't gotten back to me yet. Maybe you should call. Joy Creek has Huldine and Princess Diana in stock but not Emilia.

PL, I see you are getting a white. I have this one & it does great, no problems & it's so showy that on our recent Garden Tour, everyone thought it was a rose! Here it is on the arch. (sorry not a very good pic of it)
It's called Artic Queen (a close up to follow) Bj

Bj...it looks very nice...I started out only knowing about the singles and likeing them and now slowly likeing all of the clematis! Very pretty...do they have a sweet fragrance?

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

They have a slight fragrance, more like honey tho. Most of mine Clematis were givin to me or I got them at CostCo. The costco ones took a long time to get healthy, but most are doing well now.
