epsom salt

Alice, would you mind giving me some details re the chicken fert?? I have chickens but have hesitated to use the poo on the plants for fear it would burn them. Do you 'prepare' or dry yours or mix it with something?? Thanks for any info you might have...

Sherry, I use the chicken poo. I get it from a friend (not a chicken friend)and it has been aged composted for several months. I have lightly spread it on the top of the ground around the brugs. Then with each watering it seeps in. I have not used fresh for that very reason. Afraid it would burn the heck out of them.

Sherry,
I don't use chicken poo on the brugs. I do put it on the canna beds when I clean out their barn.
It seldom burns the cannas no matter if fresh or composted.

Oooh, oooh, you two, Kin/Alice, thanks!! I have some aged for maybe three months. My brugs are really doing nicely this season, so, I think I will try some, giving small amounts to the brugs and a little more to some other stuff. What the heck, if I don't try it, how will I ever know. Thanios kiddos!!!!!!

Sherry, invite those Brugs to tea, LOL. Chicken poo, Epsom salt, a hand full of rabbit or horse feed in water and steep 24-72 hours. Add more water. Pour some around each plant.

sugarweed, when you say horse feed, are you talking about alfalfa pellets? and if so, is it important that they have molasses on them? i've been soaking mine and used the brew once, but how often should i reapply?

thanks for all the great information! my plants will be eating gourmet tomorrow!

Sid, SOOOOOOOO good to see you!! I've been here, there, yon and I''ve missed you, et al, so very much!!! I've hesitated to make 'tea' because I've thought my poo is too new...

What a great great thread!!!

I mentioned our witches brew....with everything in a bucket. We add it about every 10" of rain. Since we get rain in great dollops, that is the measuring stick...sometimes that means every other week, sometimes every month. In between I sprinkle MG at the base of the plants.

I think (accent on t he 'think') any poo is OK...chicken is best because it is strongest. I have used goat poo as well (but didn't know about the fleas...but that is another story for another wintery night). I think the clue is to get it well rotted or composted...not too hot.

Do we obsess about our brugs or not!

JFYI I found a 4 lb. bag of ES in the health and beauty aids at Walmart for $2.19. It also say on the front of the bag plant food supplement. I think that's a good deal.

I have been using Epsom salts for a few years now on my roses and I can really tell a huge diffference in the blooming. I love the stuff! I wait till Walgreens has their big sale and then I buy tons. I mix it into my alfalfa sludge and give it to my roses every few weeks. I can't say I have seen much difference to my brugs when I have given it to them, but roses adore it.

I don't know how I missed this thread but thanks for the info. I am going to try it on my brugs and roses..

Walmart's $2.12 for 4 #. I made some of your sludge Kell and just put it on my roses 3 days ago. They sure do look good. They didn't look bad but I am expecting great things from them now. LOL

Epsom salts on tomatoes too!!!!!!! Actually, I put it on everything I water by hand.

Sherry, I never thought about it before because I use Epsom Salts on my brugs about once a week and my brugs have beautiful color. Leaves that is. LOL No blooms yet.

I think Brugs belong to the tomato family don't they? I have put it on my tomatoes for years.

Jnette, when Kell's 1 year, 4 month seedlings bloom again, it will be their third flush 2006, and they were wintered in the ground. I'm flat azzed amazed!!! I have cuttings from Susie that have been blooming forever, wintered in the ground. My cutting from Susie, Eternity, is amazing and blue green foliage, and allergic to bugs, as are Kell's seedlings. (Watch me walk out there and find them chewed to the ground) I've really had no problem with anything wintered in the ground, but I have had some yellow tinged leaves, tho wonderfully healthy, with some cuttings that likely stayed in the bubbler too long and were put in the ground late...when Kells/Susie/Kylie's bloom again, it will be their third flush...Susie's are cuttings, Kell's and Kylie's are seedlings...
