I don't know what Rainbow is like on Bandera, but the rainbox gardens at Thousand Oaks and Henderson Pass is very very nice. They have a huge variety and 6 acres to roam.
dave
Anyone for a San Antonio "Nursery Date"?
The other nusery on Bandera Road that you visited is not that great. The one I am going to check out is a different one that is in the other direction on Bandera Road heading toward town.
Dave, the one on Bandear Road sounds similar to the one on Thousands Oaks. I have never been to that one. I need to check it out too. Thanks for the input.
Hazel, the nursery inside the loop off of Bandera has closed. It was a family owned one and they recently closed it. I wish I could join y'all on the tour, but that is my weekend to work. I know you will have a great time. Wish I were there LOL. SEEYA, Margie
Margie, thanks for the information. That nursery belonged to a relative of a neighbor that I grew up with as a kid. I did not know this until a few months ago. I am sad it has closed. Sure wish you could join us ... maybe next time.
Did ya'll ever come up with a final plan on where to meet, and when? I scanned the thread here but didn't see anything definite.
dave
We're still working on it. Waiting for Susie to give us an ETA, as she's driving the farthest. Hazel is working out which two places will be best to see, and which will be the first.
Should we just meet at the first nursery?
Margie, so sorry you can't make it. Dave, hope you can join us! I hope everyone will wear Dave's Garden t-shirts, I'll be wearing mine!
I'll be wearing one of mine if I can get the dirt out of them. They have become my gardening uniforms. :o) If the other nursery is closed, I will have to find 2 that are close so we don't have to drive on different sides of town. Can't waste that gasoline and time for browsing around the nurseries. It would be great if Dave could come ... at leat maybe for lunch if he doesn't have time to go to the nurseries.
It depends on which day, and which nursery. If it's on the weekend I will only be able to spare ~30 minutes so if it's one on the other side of town I might have to skip out this time. I'll wait and see what ya'll decide on. :)
dave
Dave, the day is Sat, 6/18 (a week from this Sat.) Hope you can make at least part of it, it would be great to thank you in person for this phenomenal site you have given us!
Besides, I want to see if you look as young in person as you do in your pics! (Are you drinking some Dave Clark elixer or something?) :-)
Dave, how far is Milberger's Nursery from the Rainbow Gardens on Thousand Oaks and would you recommend us going there? I have never been to it before. Maybe we could go to that Rainbow Gardens instead of the one on Bamdera Road and then to Milberger's.
If you are talking about Milbergers on 1604, that's only about 2 miles from Rainbow on Thousand Oaks - 5 minutes.
From Rainbow, continue east on 1000 Oaks. At the first traffick light, turn left on Jones-Maltsberger. JM "basically" intersects with 1604, and just take the service road east (toward I-35) and Milbergers is literally right there.
dave
I've never visited it before, but have driven by many times. It looks pretty big with lots of plants. I'd be interested in checking it out.
dave
Y'all say what time and I'll try to be there. DD wants to go to Sea World, so we may try to come up a day early and spend the night. Can't stay the day after, my plants would get too hot!
Okay, that means Kip and I will be travelling the furthest (right?) Kip, how far from your place to San Antonio? I'll leave my home early enough to get there when we need to leave. (My guess is that it's 3 to 31/2 hrs.)
So, what do you think guys? 9 or 9:30?
Sounds like Rainbow and Milbergers, in that order, right?
trying to set the time aside. I will get back to everyone.
Maggiemoo, SA's about 3.5 hours depending on the DPS. ;o) If you're still interested on carpooling, I'm about an hour to an hour and a half, I think, from you. Send me an email and Ill shoot you a mapquest of my house.
Kip
Ya'll are going to have one wonderful day. I'm very jealous.LOL Why did my cousin have to pick the 18 th to get married? I can't count the times I've passed by Millberger's and said to myself "One day I'll stop". So after the 18 th I'll know for sure if I really should stop there. The Rainbox Gardens sounds really interesting too. Can't wait to hear the reports on this trip.
And I agree with Maggie, I would like to thank Dave in person for this incredible opportunity to meet other plant addicts and learn so much about plants and landscaping etc. Until I discovered this website, I just hated sitting at this computor. Now it's a treat.
htop, yes that was a great place to eat. Thanks for wonderful food and company. Wish your DH could have been there.
I'm confused about Milberger's though. I was thinking it was on I10. Is that something else on I 10 or are there 2 of them?
OK, I need some advice. I've finally convinced DH that it's time to dig up some Nandina. Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot we changed their name to Damdinas. They acquired their new name after we dug up, or tried to dig up some at the corner of the house where two beds intersect and they had invaded the other bed. I think it would be easier to dig up our 40 foot tall pecan tree.
Anyway, I have to find something to replace them with that will survive the drought and neglect they will receive. This spot is half way between a large pecan and a monstrous live oak. So it gets sun only from about 10 -2 or so except in the winter of course. It's on the south side of the house which helps in the winter because it's warmer. But there is another problem. This spot is in front of the porch, so if it's not an evergreen we get to look at 2 feet of bare cement wall in the winter.
I've been doing research on the PlantFiles, and so far have come up with variegated abelia, Bumble Bee abelia, rock rose, ribbon grass and something else I forgot. The variegated abelia looks really nice to me, but if it gets to be 4 feet tall it'll cover a lot of my porch. It's a very small porch and I don't want it to be closed in.
Also I was talking to my neighbor today, and he suggested maybe just staining the cement so that I don't have to cover it. The more I think about that the better I like it. There is another part of the foundation that can't be covered with plants. I could stain that to match. Does anybody have any experience with these stain products, that is using them outside? Do they fade or peal or anything like that?
I've seen good jobs and I've seen peeling stains. I do know that the primer also has to work like a glue so the stain doesnt' separate from the cement.
Kipper, are you and Maggie going to be traveling on I-10 through Columbus? I'd like to carpool with you and meet you there somewhere near I-10.
Veronica
Thanks, Dave. I think that it would be convenient for everyone to visit Rainbow Gardens on Thousand Oaks first and then Milberger's on 1604 because they are so close to each other. I imagine Rainbow Gardens on Thosand Oaks has a comparable plant selection as the one on Bandera Road. I'll try to locate a good place to eat also. 9 or 0:30 would be fine with me. Since I live in San Antonio, either time would be okay. For those travelling in from afar, would 9:30 be better?
Susie, I haven't been to Sea World this year. I usually have a season pass and go there a lot just for exercise and to view all the beautiful plants. I live about 5 minutes from it. I hope the landscaping is as beautiful as it usually is and I hope it is a nice cool day when you go there. Enjoy your visit and be sure to try to find the time to feed the dolphins (my favorite thing to do there). It will be difficult to see and do everything at Sea World in one day so try to get there very early.
Jester, I hope you can make it.
Veronica, I'm glad you are thinking about joining us.
Mary Lee, I enjoyed our visit too. I fully understand why you have renamed nandinas "damdinas". The tall ones spread by runners all over the place and from seed. I am constantly pulling up ones that have come up from seed and digging up runners which many times messes up my other plants. I now prune off the beries before they start to drop. Digging them up is an awful task, how well I know. I have had some discussions with other DGers who disagree with us that they are a problem. The dwarf ones i have do not do this so far. My rock rose is planted in full sun and wilts in the afternoon heat. I will probably have to move it to partial shade where I used to have it. It does not stay really nice looking in the winter so you may not want to plant one by your porch. I am tryimg to come up with a plant for your spot. I'll let you know if I do. I have never stained concrete so I don't know anything about it ... sorry.
Donna, hope you can make it.
Kip, it will be fun to have you along too.
Mary Lee, you might try your cement stain question on the Handyman forum. You'll almost always run into people who have done whatever you're asking about, and they give you the pros & cons, what worked and what didn't. I'll be interested in the answer myself.
Veronica, I think I-10 is the plan, should take us right past Columbus. (Speaking for Kip here) It would be great to pick you up there!
I'm really looking forward to this trip, you guys!!
I may have some plants to give away (no trade needed). I will list what I have later to see if anyone wants any of them so that I don't pack the up if no one wants them.
SA is approx 3.5 hrs away so a 9:30 meet at Rainbow would work for us. Veronica, I believe Columbus and Schoebels (yummy) is @ 2 hrs from me so if you have a cell phone, email it to me and Maggiemoo and I can call ya when we hit Sealy. That way we could catch up with each other on the road. Maggiemoo, you ready for a 6:00am departure time from my house?? Yawn
;>O
PS: I might bring a friend with me.
Kip, I'm up for it!
Oh, boy! Oh, boy! Oh, boy!
We're gonna get together!!!
Hazel, there is a plant I owe you from the CTRU. (You gave one of the 2 I was suppose to bring you to your brother. A ponytail palm, maybe?) If you'll let me know I'll bring it with me.
Anyone else want some plants while I'm headed that way?
Margie, :-( Well, at least we've done Milburger's together before. ;-> We'll miss you this time around!!
Donna, a ponytail palm is the one I need. Thanks. Is Milberger's worth viviting? I have never been there before.
Maggiemoo, thanks for the tip on the Handyman's forum. It is a good one. There's a thread on cement staining and another one on building retaining walls. Oh boy, do I ever have questions for them.
Thanks, Donna.
Question is.....how many DGers does it take to hold down an Uber to give them the appropriate number of Birthday Spanks and can it be done 1.5 weeks later ???
:>o...
ps: Happy "B" Day, Dear !
Oh,no. Now I'm scared, That's a lot of spanks! :o Thanks, Kip.
I didn't know it was your birthday Hazel!! Happy Birthday X whatever number it is.
Thanks, Mary Lee. One year away from the big 60.
Milbergers is big. It's a nice setup. They have a nice tropicals section, a large tree section, loads of florals. I'm not sure which has more (Rainbow or Milbergers).
It was much bigger than it looks from the outside..
Restaurants around the area are Casaritas, Cappirallis, tanos pizza, chuys, la madeline, zios, quiznos.
I've just been told about a dinner plate hibiscus. Does anyone going have one of those?
I'm also looking for a crested elephant ear.
jorge
Jorge, thanks. Are there any good buffets where the food doesn't taste like it has been sitting there fort 5 days?
Good to hear from you Jorge! Will you join us?
There's a chinese buffet down thousand oaks and nacogdoches that is very good. It's just the opposite way. Not too far though. There's also another chinese buffet that just opened at 281 and 1604. I can't remember the name of it. Next time I drive that way I'll get the name.
I will join you, If not for lunch, for sure the nurseries.
jorge
