This is a seedling arborea( you know the true form)that I grew from seeds sent by a friend last fall. At 4 months old and 24 inches tall..look what I found in the top of this plant last weekend.
Is this really happening??
You'll love it! I have two ready to bloom again, have seedpod from first time blooming. Smells delicious
I hope so..I waited so long. LOL
I can wait a week or so longer I guess! :-)
What wonderful news Kyle.
That plant looks so good compared to my wind whipped specimen.
Lucky you.
Great for you Kyle, I've been wishing for one myself. It's always so nice to see you!
One question, have you used Messenger on it? Many of us have been finding very early Y's and buds this year, and believe Mesenger might be the cause.
Where's a good online source for Messenger?
Kyle, Arborea blooms profusely and early!! I have had 10 inch cuttings (not seedlings like yours) bloom like crazy. My Arborea almost blooms year round. You are in for such a treat. It is the best fragrance I have ever had smelled in my life.
It is really, reallyso much fun to really want something and then get it!! One of those great perks for living!
Wow, that is a beautiful plant, Kyle. Congrats on your bud!
Kyle, I am so happy for you.......enjoy!!!!
Way t'go, brah!!
ERUs...Messenger is sold by www.edenbio.com. Located in Renton, Wa.

It's a beauty Kyle. I'm glad that you were finally able to get the plant that you really wanted.
Kyle, I have two True Arborea White seedlings, both planted on 2-22-05, one is 28 inches tall, and the other one is about 20 inches. I just put them both in the ground and I surely hope they begin to behave like yours QUICKLY!! Wow, yours is so nice. Considering the possibilities, I'm tempted to dig my largest one up and put her in a pot, so some animal doesn't get to her, I hat two broken off at the base this week. I cannot wait to see yours bloom!!!!!
I just re-read the beginning of this thread. So this is a seedling blooming at the age of only 4 months? Wow! Does anyone know, is arborea (from seed) likely to bloom at a young age or is it something special Kyle is doing?
Thanks, Eileen
Must be the Kyle touch. I have 2 Arborea grown from seed, one in Oct '03 and one in Nov '04. Neither has bloomed yet. The oldest one got so tall, I took a long cutting (about 6 ft) and water rooted it over the winter. I'm waiting now for the soil roots to develop.
Kyle, the seedlings I'm growing from your crosses are doing nicely, (except for when the slugs eat the leaves). I'll let you know when they bloom.
OK..ya all wanna know how to get these to bloom early and short...................well heres the secret.......Beats ME!!!!LOL it was in a warm..not hot greenhouse after germination.Out of 9 seedlings this is the only one to bud so far.Surprised me as much as you people when I found it.Will see if the others bloom soon or if its just the genes in this one seedling.I'll label this one as 4 months and keep it for comparison to the other 8 seedlings.I have had some brug seedlings for 4 years and STILL no flowers..I don't wait that long now.12 months no flowers..COMPOST. LOL
:-)
WOW, if I used that rule I would have lots less to take care of.
Mine has a bud on it for the first time in three yrs. It should open next week. Yours sure looks better than mine. Arborea in my opinion is really picky. It does not like being over watered.
Gosh, thanks for that time Larry. I have my first and likely last arboreas - however, you live in zone 8a and yours is three years - that gives me hope, but waiting three years for a bloom is a little longer than I'd like to wait, lol!! Nice to see you around again...
Gosh, thanks for the over watering tip, Larry. I have my first and likely last arboreas - however, you live in zone 8a and yours is three years - that gives me hope, but waiting three years for a bloom is a little longer than I'd like to wait, lol!! Nice to see you around again...
How exciting Kyle!! I cant wait to see your bloom.
Looks like it to me!
Thanks, Eclipse!!! Hot dog, I wish I had read up on her, I had her in a tomato kit and I know it was too hot for her, and was in the blazing sun. She's now potted up and in the shade. I cannot wait to see yours bloom!! Nice seeing you here Kyle, I've really missed you!!!
I love the arboreas but they don't like TX. Way to go Kyle, you're gonna love it!
I'm sure they won't like it here either Susie, I just want to smell one, then I think I'll be okay...I've sworn not to get needy brugs and I will never purposely do it again, and it seldom works anyway. But, I did have two versi peaches winter outside and they are now growing nicely, little but they're on their way...
Well tonights the night..it finally bloomed, the flower hung down till this evening then tilted up at a 45 degree angle. Go figure! Awesome smell, not like a regular brug..more like a night blooming cactus flower or a lily type flower..definately different! Now to see what happens this summer..if it survives our summer I'll take it into the work greenhouse next fall to overwinter it.
:-)
I did not expect it to be that pretty, I just love it, I've never had a white one and I just love them, yours is elegant, yet flashy, and girlie, I hope I can grow mine out and that she looks and smells just like yours!!!! Thanks, Kyle, I have four nice seedlings - just doesn't seem like the seed would sprout so nicely if they won't grow here. I should know soon...
Kyle,
Thanks for this thread and especially for posting the last picture!!! The thread was very informative.

Wow! Beautiful flower, Kyle. I really wish I had this one, but I have a feeling that it would not like my Zone 10 climate.
What a beautiful flower!
It looks great!! Glad it finally bloomed for you!
So now you have smelled the smell. I just love it so much. I truly wish I could have it in a bottle so I could be surrounded by it.
Gosh...you mean? that's what I have in store for us? WOoooooooowser!
Oh MY! You lucky dog! The scent must be good if you say so, lol!
Not knowing much about these, could we get some more details?
I understand it's a smaller flower? How small? Should be planted in shade, and doesn't like to be watered much? Why does it prefer cooler weather, is it from the mountains?
What can it be crossed with? I understand it's self-pollinating, but it has been crossed?
Could we get this added to our database here?
Can't help it, I'm in love :)
viola, since the makers of Messenger were at the GA RU, can you tell us how to order it? or where to buy it?
Violabird, this is a species that comes from the high Andes, warm days cool nights, they need the temp difference to do well....so for now it will be OK here but soon when our days are hot and humid with warm to hot nights it may fallter. It is self fertile( can be self pollinated) and form viable seeds. It can only be crossed to itself and sanquinea forms.Vulcanicola is a sanquinea type so it too can be crossed to arborea. Sanquineas lack scent but have true red flowers a color we wish we could incorporate into the larger fragrant forms. Maybe some day. In years past suaveolens species were labeled arboreas. Care must be taken in buying seeds to know if the parent was the REAL arborea or a suaveolens. The flower is smaller than most brugmansias, but no less spectacular. This one has a totally unique fragrance as far as brugs go,in my opinion. Very fuzzy calyx and leaves with a definate toothed edge to the leaves. I keep these moist not wet for now only because its in a very fast draining soil mix. not too much fertlizer so far either...I pollinated the flower last night and will see what happens.
kyle
It sounds like there might be no way that I can grow one here, hot, hot, more hot, then humid. What about a mister and a fan to keep her cool at night and shade during the day?? I'd just like to get one to bloom, even if it's just one time...
Kyle, the first year I had her, she did not form pods. The second year I pollinated her with a couple of sangs and my pink Vulcanicola. They took. But I had some of her own pods on her too. So I have hope those seedlings will be a mix. Then last year almost every flower podded. I tried to cross pollinate by slitting the side of a bud and pulling out her anthers. Then waiting to maturity to cross pollinate. I got pods alright but I also got pods on ones I did as controls. I even sealed the flower so I wouldn't get any help from the bees. I finally gave up!
I sure hope you are succcesful. I would love arborea types with such fragrance in different colors. A dream come true.
Sherrylike..grow a small one in a pot indoors in a well lighted window in the summer with the house being cooler it should live and bloom. :-)
