Interleaving blank filter papers

Arroyo Grande, CA

The seeds were adhering to the sheet above, so I started putting a damp blank sheet in between each sheet containing the seeds, makes it much easier to go through the seeds and you do not have to worry about contaminating one seed with another. I still alternate genuses so you can tell which seeds have been contaminated and avoid doing two sets of seeds that look alike next to each other.

ummmm.... never had that sort of problem, as each seed gets its own filter paper or paper towel and its own little baggie.

If they are small and you are not using baggies, just filter paper layers, then it is a problem. You can put about fifty to sixty filter papers in a container. This way you can go through them pretty fast, not worrying about contamination.

In practice the interleaving has really speeded up the process of looking for germinating seeds and cut down significantly on lost seeds. It has also helped keep an even moisture level. I have been putting about seventy-five layers of seeds in each container and that seems about right. Anymore takes just too long to go through, especially when they start germinating and you have to move them. I change papers whenever anything is amiss or gets contaminated. Coffee filter papers are cheap when you buy four hundred at a time.
