New branches grow along existing branches:
I'm Not Buying Any More Plants Until...
About 1-2 months after I repot the new Adeniums, I'll begin fertilizing them to see what kind of new growth I'll get.
Delecie, You have nice branching on yours, with a nice overall shape! I do fertilize mine, but don't have near the amount of branching and foliage as you do. Could be my shorter growing season is to blame (and not the grower, LOL).
Nat:
I've seen photographs of your brugs so I know it's not the grower! I agree with you that it's probably your shorter growing season. My adeniums get to live outside year round although their growth slows around late winter. I always look forward to seeing the new leaves and buds develop. I hope that I'll get some branching on the new adeniums when I begin fertilizing them. If not, I'll follow your lead and give them a big chop! LOL
That was a good deal on the Hilo beauty, when are we going shopping? we can make it a shopping up in stead of a Round up.
ely
Hi Nat! Thanks so much for the clarification! That was really nice of you to take the time to show me where to cut. I really appreciate that. I've saved that picture for reference. Thanks for the warning about the sap too. My skin is particularly sensitive to those types of things. Life is good when I've got a little help from my friends;-) You're a doll! I'll be sure to post after pictures too.
Delecie, I have that exact same container! I got it at Big Lots. Your adenium is gorgeous.
Ely:
I like that, "a shopping up". We're going shopping this weekend because it's a long weekend. Woo Hoo! Aroids here we come. :-)
Thank you Clare. It's my favorite adenium. I bought my container (and others) from Big Lots also. I really like them because they are inexpensive and light weight.
I bought a couple of adeniums from Mr. Ko as well, and they're finally here! They were shipped 5-2, came to Houston, then the post office couldn't find the aphis office for inspection, so they went back to Taiwan, were repackaged and shipped back to America. It looks like the aphis office in Houston was moving from one location to another, because the phone number changed and the zip code was different. I got Beauty Cloud 2 and Super Yellow Maple Leaf (a variegated one!). The second time that they were mailed, they were delivered in exactly a week.
What potting mix do y'all use for your adeniums? I've tried several different mixtures, and haven't come up with anything that I'm really happy with yet.
Ronna:
I use Scott's potting soil for Cactus and Succulents. http://www.scotts.com/media/media/pdf/productGuide/labels/7307475.pdf
Please post photographs of your new Adeniums.
Ronna, that is awesome! I can't wait to see your blooms! I've heard that there is now a fragrant adenium. I may have to get one of those.
Scott's is a good one. I use Super Soil's Cactus Mix from Home Depot or Sunshine Mix #4.
Phil from Cornell University emailed me once with his mix:
"Make sure you use a porous mix - here is mine -
3 parts Metromix 560 with coir
1 part fine pumice or Aliflor
1 part extra fine pumice
1 part Turface
If you can't get these items locally, substitute but make sure when
you squeeze the damp mix in your hand it crumbles when you let go
(does not stick together). Otherwise the rule of thumb is to tailor
your mix to your watering habits. Adeniums grow well in just pumice
alone 1/8 - 1/4 inch size but would require more regular fertilizing."
Clare, I am SOOOOO proud of you. Now, where are MY clippers!
Clare are you going to try and root the cuttings?
:) Donna
Hi Donna, yes, I'll probably stick them in potting soil and root them, but to be honest, these flowers are the least attractive flowers of any adenium that I've ever seen. They are thin and spindly. That probably made it easier to hack away at the branches. I don't think I could have done that to my $40 Noble Concubine. I'll probably eventually give this one away to my mother unless the flowers improve, but I don't think they will. Here is another look below at the flowers when they were flowering in my portable greenhouse.
Thanks, Nat. I felt a lot better cutting the branches knowing that it was the right thing to do! Thanks again for your help.
No problem, Clare. I was reluctant to do it until I tried it out on my orphan one. Now if I can just get the nerve up to pinch out the tops in my seedlings. Maybe, I'll do one and see what happens. :-)
Don't worry Clare, I changed my mine about pinching my seedlings. LOL
I looked at my 2 last night which are starting to put out some big leaves and I thought to myself "nahhhhh, not gonna do it".
Look at those cute chubby babies! Very brave of you to whack your big one back, Clare, I need to do it to some of mine, but haven't gotten the narve yet. Thanks for the soil recipes, I'll look for the stuff on Saturday.
My plants are here, but they aren't HERE yet. Since I live out in the boonies, my plant boxes always go to my sister's house. Her mailman knows that we both get boxes, and that they usually have plants in them. He knew about this one, and that the box had already been back to Taiwan once. Yesterday morning, my sister was outside, chatting with her DH and a neighbor, when the mailman pulled onto the street. He came straight to Julie's house, in the middle of a several block street. He was as relieved that it was here as we were!
What odd names Ronna, I can't wait to see them. (Beauty Cloud 2 and Super Yellow Maple Leaf (a variegated one!). The trouble I have with them is they need to overwinter inside. I am so limited for space. I bought 6 from HD a few weeks ago. They had great bulbous bottoms. I thought I had read one adenium coop last year that to get fat bottoms you needed to have them grafted. But these were not.
Delecie, I have seen adenium trees in your zone, you are so lucky! Your new bromeliad is so great. I love it. I would have bought that in a second. I see where you said you were now addicted to aroids and variegated plants I too seem to being tugged toward aroids and variegated aroids. I love them. I was at a hardware store the other day and they had an orange and a chartreuse philodendron. I had them in my cart for awhile , then returned them to the shelf. I just do not have the room. But I may go back and get them. LOL.
Clare, you are so funny calling Dave's a support group of sorts. Yea, it supports our addiction. Since Dave's I have branched out to so many more plants that I just have to have.
LOL, Nat. Thatta girl.
Thanks, Ronna. I think any well-draining mix will do. I just bought a $40 Noble Concubine and $25 Harry Potter from a friend who bought them from Mr. Ko. I have a feeling that I would have paid much less if I would have ordered them directly from Mr. Ko. His prices seem fairly inexpensive. How difficult was it to send payment to him? Does he take PayPal now? That would be so much easier. Did you have to pay for an inspection? I have my Import Permit, and I am thinking about buying some directly from him if it is not too much hassle. My friend was very pleased with his order. He said everything was very well packed.
Hi Kell, congrats on your purchases! Don't you love the fat bottoms? Whoever said that about the fat bottoms wasn't correct. Adeniums store nutrients and water in their bottoms. Seedlings have them right away, as do grafts, but cuttings take a while to develop a fat bottom. Here is a good link: http://www.cactus-mall.com/andre/large.html There is a four-year-old cutting called "Crimson Star" that has a fat bottom. What they probably meant was, in order to get an exact cultivar, you have to propagate an adenium by cuttings or by grafts because the seeds don't come true.
Kell:
You were able to leave a chartreuse and orange Philodendron?!! You go girl! I wouldn't have been able to leave it because my VAA ( variegated aroid addiction) is too strong now. I'll be keeping my eyes open for that philo...and since we have a long weekend coming, I think I should visit some plant nurseries...LOL
Clare, I bought them on ebay, and it was no trouble at all. He does take paypal, and there wasn't a charge for the inspection. The shipping is expensive, of course, but not as bad if you buy more than one plant. The shipping is $18 for one or two plants, $22 for three or four, and $27 for five or six. He sometimes starts his auctions at .99, I ended up paying 8.50 each for the plants, and since there were two, the shipping was a few pennies over $9 each. He sends an invoice so that you know exactly how much to pay. If that aphis office hadn't been moving, they would have gotten here in a week.
I just looked, he isn't running any special deals on ebay right now, but his plants are anywhere from $10 to $20 each, and most of them are dutch auctions, so that's probably the price that you would pay.

Thanks so much, Ronna. I didn't even know he was on eBay. I really appreciate this information. I've got his auctions bookmarked now. I am very interested in this fragrant one if it is indeed fragrant. And there a few others which I really like. You are right that shipping is pretty expensive though. Thanks again.
Hi Kaleem. How old is your Adenium? Did you grow it from a seed?
I bought this one last year and in winters ......roots were rotted because of overwatering, I cut the roots and planted again and completely hopeless..... but aftera month found signs of life in my plant and then I wa dancing with pleasure......... This spring have blooms and next year this will be much healthy. When my plant rotted I went to the same nursery from where I bought and told them my problem they showed me their plants .... all were have the same problem... I came back with broken heart but soon my plant made me happy again
Kaleem
Hi Kaleem! That is a beautiful color of your flower. I had the same thing happen with a couple of my seedlings. The bottoms started to rot; so I cut to clean white wood and let it heal over for a few days and then planted it again. They took root! They will develop a fat bottom again in time.
Luv the color, Kaleem! Way to go!!
:) Donna
