Happy Victoria Day weekend!!
The garden centres will be like a zoo on Saturday .... I think I'm going to stay home and deal with what I already have, for once. :-) Like these moon vine seedlings, pic taken a few days ago...they all have their first set of leaves wide open so should be ready to go. DSO is leaving for Saskatchewan at 7:00 am ( :-P ) tomorrow to visit family, so I plan to spend a relaxing weekend alone puttering around.
What are everyone else's plans for the long weekend?
~Shannon
Happy Victoria Day long weekend!
My DSO is away for the W/E as well, leading a retreat. I'm planning on staying home and clearing out some of the awful yucca plants and bushes beside the garage, I saw a big rat coming from there this morning, and THAT's not going to happen again! It'll be very clear around the ground when I'm done. So I'll be puttering around in the garden as well.
Planting rest of the veggies and trying to get indoor pots from 3rd. floor nestled happily into the garden. One is a 5 gal. pot of arum lilies. Have to get a neighbour to carry it down. I can't lift it.
MIGHT start planting out flats of impatiens. Not too sure if it is safe to this though.
Oh yes, most of the hostas are showing now so will give them a feed.
First vase of iris too. What an exciting time of year.

No need to buy any more annuals or anything for that matter. I have everything out and hanging, and thankfully, growing well. All my veggies are up, and the flower seeds like Moon Vine, Butterfly Vine, Sweetpeas, Peony Poppies are all getting pretty big now. Had DH make some cedar trelllis' for me, so they can start climbing. My bulbs are all up including Stargazers and other Orientals, Pineapple and Calla Lily are up and finally the Abyssinian Glads are poking through. My Red Humbert Canna are getting tall now. The foliage is such a gorgeous color as they grow, even before they flower. Love 'em! My Delphinium is getting ready to start it's first bloom. Already about 3 feet high and grew in quite bushy this year. Looks good. Liatris is a foot high as well, but probably won't bloom for a couple more weeks. My Schubertii Allium are getting ready to open. They are much smaller, I noticed than the Purple Sensation that started blooming a couple weeks ago. And my Roses have a gazillion buds. Woo Hoo. Can't wait! My Rose of Sharon that Linda gave me some months ago, is starting to take off as well. I was worried after I transplanted it outside as a seedling a few weeks ago, and she promptly lost all her leaves and looked quite sad. But now it has new growth and so, it appears that it has finally settled in. Whew.... and Ingrid, the Mimosa Silk Trees are doing wonderfully. They are pretty small yet, but seem to be happy.
We are spending a quiet long weekend. Thought we'd get started building an Ark. We have had a lot of rain this past week and expect to have a little reprieve today with the sun shinning, but another system is moving in to give us more rain for the next 3-4 days. Oh well, at least we aren't worried about forest fires!!!
You saw a big...RAT, Linda?!!! OK, that's pretty gross. If I would have been there to see it, I think I would have been joining Cheryl...REAL FAST!
Donna, your yard sounds like it's in great shape.
Good luck with that rat, Linda! I heard something on the radio the other day, saying that rats are really nurturing animals. We must get freaked out by them because they tend to live in dark, sometimes unsavoury places - ?
Well, our sunny weekend has degenerated into a cool, windy, rainy version of its former self. Fortunately I have already broken my vow today, by going to Lee Valley Tools .... not a garden centre, per se, but it was still a zoo today .... and now have all the parts of a nice new little drip irrigation system to play with. The challenge will be to get it set up before the cats decide that the connectors are great little toys that I've bought for them, and knock them under the furniture, along with what must be a dozen chapsticks over the last 3 years..... cats! good thing they're cute ..... :-)
LOL.......sounds like you will be keeping busy for awhile Shannon.
Pouring here and I looked like a drowned rat getting my goodies (huge hanging baskets for $8.99) from the Canadian Tire Sale at 6:00 am today. Man did the heavens drop a load here we didn't see this much rain in B.C.! They had very large and well established hanging baskets of Osteopermums, Fuschias, Geraniums, Bacopa, Million Bells, Huge Begonias (3 to a basket), Coleus, mini Petunias, etc., etc. Only those prices made that chilling experience worth it! ;)
They sound terrific, Pam. And you can't beat that price! Saw them advertised at our CT too, but was a good girl and stayed home. Got no where else to hang anything!
Great price, Pam! Boy, it would hardly be worth it to start baskets from seed at that price. Good going!
LOL, thanks for sharing these photos, Pam. Felt like I was there! Glad I wasn't, but I am sure most Moose Jaw peeps were happy with the outcome. The things we Gardeners won't do....
great shots Pam.. They better be worth it for all that effort.
I heard on the news today that you guys were getting whalloped with winds in the 90kph range, hope you're safe. We're having a blow too, I've got most of my brugs laying down. Those that didn't blow down repeatedly, I laid down, our gusts are only about 50-60 km.
It was worth it! :D Truthfully tho after looking at those pictures I think it's that sale that makes me look like a person on a mission when I get near a greenhouse. I find even little 90 year old ladies can be dangerous when they spot a plant and will practically run peeps over if'n it's one they were after! :S
The winds picked up around 11:00 am Linda and when we went back to CT at lunch it was b*l*o*o*d*y freezing out....I hung on to DH!!!! My little portable cold frame didn't blow away tho...the back yard was very calm but the front certainly took the brunt of the wind....more shingles are on the lawn now (I am soooooooo glad we are somewhat sheltered partway down the hill).
Linda crossing fingers and toes here that we all have a calm, sunny, and warm day tomorrow!! ;)
Great pics, Pam! I got a little stressed out just looking at them :-) But in a good way. Looks like Moose Jaw's weather has now settled down a bit....shingles, yikes! Is there going to be some roof work in your future?
We're having a nice, cold, rainy, early April weekend down here...although Tuesday and Wednesday are looking good, just in time to go back to work!
Roofers have been called and now we wait. ;) It's an old house and the old wood shingles are underneath so we were covered and buckets weren't needed.
I'm always amazed at how our weather is often the exact opposite Shannon. Moose Jaw was very warm and humid today....we spent the day in the yard and finally accomplished a lot of work. We are also greening up nicely now and more rain is in our short term forecast. Hopefully you will be blessed with nice weather next weekend.
