CLOSED: Sedum Cuttings

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

OK folks, I need help on this.

The other day I had to trim back several of my Autumn Joy sedums b/c the other surrounding plants were getting smothered.
I had a bucketful of stems and thought it was a shame to waste them. I put a bunch in a planter w/ dirt and some in a bucket of water to see which method roots better. I have rooted sedum in dirt before before and know they root easily. Haven't tried water yet.

I would like to trade these here at DG.

Since these bloom in fall most folks would want them before then, right? Or should I just let them keep growing, overwinter here, and ship them early next Spring while they are still dormant? I would hate to send them out this summer thru the mail and them arrive all roasted and dead.

THANKS for any advice!!

UPDATE: Am posting what I want to trade for further on down this thread- thanks for looking!!

I tried rooting sedum in water and it doesn't work, they started to rot. I stuck them in the ground before they fully rotted and they rooted. Let us know if the water method works, maybe I did something wrong?

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

mvespa,
Thanks for the tip about yours rotting in water. I would have hated to lose all those cuttings. I got more p. soil today and just took them out of the water and potted them up like the others.

I will probably have close to 60-70 cuttings if they all live!! LOL!!

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Sedums root best in soil, they do rot in water!

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

BerryGirl,

I don't see any problem trading in the summer. Especially sedum. Since they are succulents, they ship very well. Trading even without rooting them would be acceptable if posted as "cuttings".

That is handy information knowing to root them in soil and not water. But makes sense due to the nature of the plant. You wouldn't root a cactus in water.

What are you looking for in trade?

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

Molly,
Thanks!
I didn't know you could send cuttings "as is." with no roots on them! Is this something regularly done here? Isn't this kinda risky? I mean there is no guarantee that it will root once you get it. I would be sorta disappointed if I traded and the cuttings I got were dead or didn't live.

I am not real sure- other than roses- what I am looking for in trade. The sedum cuttings were a spur of the moment thing and I thought I was gonna have to wait a few weeks til they rooted- or in the Fall- to trade them out.
I'll try to get a list down in a day or so.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Berrygirl,

Sedums and succulents do travel very well, although I still always send my plants priority.

When I buy S&S from Squaw Mountain, they do ship the roots in a bit of soil wrapped in plastic in rubber bands, but they do not water them first. The soil is dry.

My trade list is not up to date, but if you have any particular wishes, special interests other than roses, let me know. I have a lot of different kinds of plants down here.

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

Here is most of of my "wish list":

1 cat's whiskers- orthosiphon stamineus
2 chocolate cosmos- c. atrosanguineus
3 dusty miller- centaurea cineraria OR senecio cineraria
4 Joe Pye weed- eupatorium purpureum
5 Black Knight butterfly bush- buddleia davidii
6 crocosmia/montbretia- all colors
7 Carolina Jessamine- gelsemium sempervirens
8 Miss Huff lantana- L. camara
9 Milk & Wine lily- crinum [various species have this name]
10 Confederate Jasmine- trachelospermum jasminoides
11 Bridalwreath spirea- s. vanhouttei
12 Giant allium- a. giganteum
13 society garlic- tulbaghia violacea
14 spider plant- chlorophytum comosum
15 Roses- Yellow and white Lady Banks

If anyone wants to trade for my Autumn Joy sedums, please tell me whether you want cuttings - or rooted plants. I will have to wait to ship the "rootings" as I just potted them.

THANKS so very much!
Debbie

Any one wanna trade?

McGregor, IA(Zone 4b)

I think that cuttings of matrona could very easily be mailed dry - wrapped in newsprint or such. Especially if it is a pulled out stem with a little bit of roots on the bottom. I get a lot of pieces that break off or I dig up to divide, etc. that just lay about on the ground until I get around to doing something with them...And then that would be just to stick them in the dirt in a new spot. They are very easy...

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

Hello?
Anyone wanna trade??

I am so sorry to bump this thread like this but I am desperate to get good homes for these sedum babies!

darmadoll,
I would be VERY interested in trading- LOL!!

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Berrygirl,

Sorry I didn't come back with you on your offer of trading. I know I said I have a lot of plants here and when I looked at your list I wasn't sure I could come up with something that you really might like.

I do have some Yellow Butterfly bush, a Yellow Lady Banks rose bush and I think my lantana might be the one you like.

Only problem is I would have to take cuttings, they wouldn't be rooted and I don't know if that's what you are interested in.

Hey, I've never even tried to root a rose cutting. I received a gardening newsletter tip the other day that discussed this and I think I'm going to try it.

Let me know what you think.

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

makshi,
It is an Autumn Joy sedum. There are several good pics here at the PF. DH says they look like broccoli til the tops turn a brick red in the fall.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I have some baby spider plants, What color are you looking for? I had white w/ green on outside edge, Green w/ white on outside edge and solid green. I lost one of the vaiiegated this winter. Just not sure which one.

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

Sandy,
LOVE your screen name, BTW and thanks for the kind words on the other thread!

I would be thrilled to trade with you for both the crocosmia and the baby spider plant. It really doesn't matter which spider plant, as I have always wanted one and never had one.

I can send you a LOT of AJ sedum!
Debbie

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Debbie,

As promised, your package went out today. I sent several cuttings of each, soaked their paper towels in a liquid rooting stuff. Sorry I didn't mark them, but each plant type is easily identifiable.

Your confirmation number is 01038555749430647407. Hopefully you will receive by Friday. LMK please.

Molly,
thanks! I'll let ya know asap.

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

I have society garlic, but don't know how to divide it or even if it can be divided. I also have confederate jasmine, but don't know how to root it. If you know how, l can send a cutting or can try to root it. I have Carolina Jasmine, but need to check and see how it is doing, but again, I don't know how to root it.

I am interested in the AJ, so please let me know.

Thanks,
Sheila

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

Sheila,
I am new to this rooting stuff too! But I'll take just cuttings so you don't have to root it. Mine I send you- the AJ sedum- will be cuttings too. But sedum is a no-brainer, you just stick it in the ground and it goes crazy. I just make sure afterwards that it doesn't look wilted til it 'roots". Most folks who send un-rooted cuttings just wrap the ends [not the whole cutting] in damp paper towel covered in Saran wrap or something like it. They should be fine as long as they don't dry out in transit.
I assume society garlic can be divided like most bulbous plants? I've never had it so I'll look it up if you'd like.

I am def interested in your 2 jasmines, though.

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

How long of a cutting do you want from the Jasmine? Also, I am thinking that I should cut the new growth, don't you think? The new growth is a lighter green and more flexible than the older parts. Obviously, the length will be somewhat restricted, but how long the new growth actually is, but since I am new at this, I just don't want you to be disappointed with what you get. The Confederate Jasmine I know is not problem. I have 4 of those in different places. The Carolina Jasmine I will check on today and see how it is doing.

How many cuttings would you like of each?

The society garlic, I will have to look at and see how it grows. Hopefully, it will be pretty much like other bulbs where you just separate them. I will let you know about that also. How many would you like of that?

This works great because I got two AJ in a trade recently and really wanted some more to fill in an area. Do I need to use any type of rooting hormone on them or just put them in the dirt? Also, the ones I have were already rooted and take full sun. Do the cuttings need to be somewhat sheltered until they get going good?

Sorry for so many questions, just want to do everything correctly.

Thanks,
Sheila

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Debbie,

They're here!!!!!!!!!!!!! In perfect condition and quick. I already have them planted. Wow, mailman was early today.

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Debbie,

I stopped at the nursery on the way home and found that they had most of their plants half price, so I picked up a Confederate Jasmine for you. So you won't have to root that one!!! It's not huge, but will be a nice start for you. I still have to look at the Carolina Jasmine. I also am sure that I can do the society garlic, so we just need to work out the details.

Thanks,
Sheila

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

Molly, I am so glad they arrived safely- and I hope in good condition. Hope you enjoy them as mucha s I do!

Sheila, you have email!
