Can anyone identify this Morning Glory?

Brown City, MI(Zone 5a)

First, let me say that I just can't get the color of this flower to photograph correctly, but the shape is unusual (at least to me), so I've posted the picture anyways.

It does have the lighter color around the edges, but the color of the bloom is more of a very dark blue with a purple hue to it and then an even darker center rib. The violet/purple showing in the center of the "petals" is not noticable when looking at it , but when the flower is spent, and shriveled, it's that color.

Now if that hasn't totally confused you ....................... any guesses?

Am I right that this is an unusual flower for for Morning Glories?

I bought these at a local nursery ........... no tag of course, and no one knew it's name.

Maybe I should have added ................. maybe it's not a Morning Glory.

i want seed! i want seed! :)

Brown City, MI(Zone 5a)

Well, if it's a morning glory, I should have lots of those. ;-)

I don't think it is a morning glory, the flowers are a different shape, and the leaves are different too. I don,t know what it is, but it sure is beautiful.

i want seed too if its a morning glory>

WOW!!!!!!! that is one pretty flower

Brown City, MI(Zone 5a)

hmmm........... one of the reasons I thought it was a MG, was because it was in an area with other MGs in the greenhouse.

I'm going to have to stop by the Nursery again, and see if there are different employees around that I can ask. Maybe I'll hit it lucky, and find the owner working. It's a small business, and she is very hands on when deciding what will be grown and sold.

Like I said ............. I do think this is a very pretty bloom, but the picture does not show what it truely looks like. I'll try to get a better one at a different time of day. Maybe different lighting will help get a more realistic picture.

Edited to add: The form of this flower reminds me of a clematis .......... it's definately some kind of annual vine though.

Here's another picture, it still doesn't catch the color right, but it's getting closer.

The bloom seems to be Bluer when it first opens, and turns more and more purple as it ages.

Hope this picture shows the foliage better.

Thanks Zoomer,

There is one picture that looks exactly like the one I have. (Images by WillowWasp)

Some of the images though, show the traditional heart shaped leaf ............... and a bit different bloom. (Images by Crimson)

Is there variation in this particular variety?

There is supposedly a single and a double form. I hope mine are as pretty as yours. That is if I ever get around to sowing them!

San Francisco, CA(Zone 10a)

The leaves on most morning glories are a little variable. They can go from heart shape to the three pointed shape on the same plant. Probably this variety is a sport or hybrid, so there is also some variability among the flower shapes of folks' plants. I wouldn't expect it to come true from seed, especially if there are other morning glories around.

It is a beautiful Morning Glory, unlike any I have ever seen, Congratulations!

My Lilypon, that's beautiful, and it sure looks similar.

Can you post a large picture so we can see the flower closer up?

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Boomer is right, blue picotee, sometimes they double sometimes they don't. Got this one growing too, I got the pink growing, and just bought seeds for the double red picotee. their beautiful MG's

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

I would endorse kathy ann. I grew these last year and it did not grow more than a foot, but it flowered nicely. The seeds were from a trade and I could collect a few from the previous year. I had the pink, but it did not do well the first time.

really, I had mine in a pot with a tomatoe hoop on it and tied a string to the hoop and ran it to the rafters, I couldn't gather seeds from the top it got so high. but their not suppose to run along ways, their better for hanging baskets and such. I think these are the shorter varieties MG's or at least that's what I read about them. but mine did really well for some strange reason.

Brown City, MI(Zone 5a)

Plant Files say they grow 4 to 6 feet.

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Yea, may be in the warmer zones, it will not attain that length.
