This is a little tricky. I've been entering Cooley's Iris Garden Photos. When the thumbnail comes up it says 'By Doss' which is incorrect unless it refers to the entry rather than the photographer. Is there a way to clarify this or to give credit to the photographer in the thumbnail? It feels awkward at best the way it is now.
Credit to other photographers on the thumbnails
doss - if you are not the photographer then you are required to give credit to the photo source in your Comments attached to the photo upload. Also, IMHO, if you are uploading quite a number of Cooley's photographs it would be wise to insure you have their permission to use them here in the PF and state that you will give credit to them in the Comments.
Are you unchecking the box that says this photo is your own work? There is a box on the page where you upload the image and you have to manually uncheck it if it's someone else's image.
Hope this helps.
I'm doing all of that. I have Cooley's permission, no sweat. They've been great. I uncheck the box and take off my copyright. When I write the description of the photo I say 'Courtesy of Cooley's Iris Garden'. But still the thumbnail says 'By Doss.' I even give credit to Cooley's when I put notes from them into the plantfiles. Really guys, I'm playing by the rules. I just think that maybe we need to change the way thumbnails are described if that's possible when we are using other people's images. I just don't know if it's possible.
Hmmm...don't know. I've never submitted an image that I didn't take myself, so I'm of no assistance.
This is something that Terry will have to answer.
Terry, Where are Youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu?
I think you should get credit for posting it to PlantFiles, doss!! Afterall..... you've done all the legwork.
1. You're the one who got permission.
2. You're the one that collected the photos.
3. You're the one that spent the time to upload them.
4. And more importantly...YOU'RE the one that paid the subscription to be on DG....not Cooley's.
Just my way of thinking I guess.
You've given them credit, you've not claimed copyright; you should at least get credit for contributing to the greatness/thoroughness of the PlantFiles.
Sounds reasonable.
Thanks, you're both sweet. I guess I see your point. I do appreciate that I have been able to upload the Cooley photos - even though I think that it's a good deal for them. If we do this, then we can have photos of the new cultivars here. Other than people touring the Iris fields, we have to wait until DG people grow them. Since the brand new cultivars are around $50.00 each, it usually means having to wait at least two and very often three or four years to see them here - although the plantfiles are updated with the cultivar names rapidly enough.
Doss,
You have done a wonderful job adding the photos and we appreciate them. I agree it's great advertising as well for Cooley's or any other vendor that allows us to use their photos. I also understand what you are saying about your name appearing on the thumbnail of the photo and you are correct , that's because you are the one that submitted the photo. There is nothing we can do to change that. Langbr stated some very good reasons above why your name should be there.
You have been doing a great with removing the copywrite and giving the acknowledgement. You getting pretty good at this. Keep up the good work and we do appreciate it.
You are welcome. I get it. I'm probably onto another vendor, at least for new introductions. I haven't even begun Nola's Iris. We'll see how it goes.
doss, your name is the one associated with the photo (not as a watermark, but a hyperlink), because if there's a question or comment about it, you'd be in the best position to respond.
As long as
a) you're not placing a watermark on the image;
b) you obtained prior permisssion; and
c) you're including the source in the caption
you're doing everything "by the book."
Thanks Terry. It's clarified and it makes sense.
