Does pruning on old wood promote new blooming the next year or is it primarily for size and shape issues?

Pruning out the current seasons spent bloom will prmote new growth and larger number of blooms the following year.

I had lilacs in my old house and bought a new one three years ago when we moved to our new house.

This year was it's first bloom (a single cone)! Now I can't wait for it to wilt so I can cut it off for next year.

We had HUGE bushes of them along with other plants but the people who bought the house didn't let us know that they didn't want any of the plants and they got rid of all them. What a waste, we could have had them dug up.

Pruning: if you cut off the flowers, it will really bloom. And your house will smell good. And your friends' houses too.
