navigating tabs

Hi I'm new and having trouble with the tabs in the diary ... the only drop-down menu I see to navigate to a new tab is when I go to edit an entry that I've already entered ... clicking on the list on the right of the main page does nothing to change the tab ... also the list on the right says "diaries" not "tabs" so I'm a little confused ....
