Here is a photo from last week, this has been growing here for 6 years now.
It is in full sun on the southeast corner of our home.
Any ideas for low growing, flowering, plant?
Can't wait to see your ice plant Texme in person. See you tomorrow!
TxMel, ooo I just love that. That is beautiful. Will definitely have to get some of that. Do you know what variety yours is? Your coreopsis and sage is beautiful also.
Trunnels: don't mind the hijacking, after all you all are such friendly helping hijackers. LOL
Ice plant.... I think it is Delosperma Cooperii just plain hot pink.

I AM excited to learn that they develop tiny seeds, and have been watching for some weekly!
I have a corner out front that I would love for it to COVER!
This is a great variety, TXMel........I have a carpet of the stuff too. =) Did you find that it slowly built up momentum? I planted mine 4 years ago, and it has bloomed and done well every year, but is only now a CARPET!
MKJ
Yes, it really has taken off the last 2 or 3 years. It is about to take over the little flagstone walk area, so I do pull them off and move them around the yard as transplants. I find that early spring, they transplant well, but later in the summer they just burn up! I had one transplant last week that bloomed every day after moving it. Never skipped a beat!
I REALLY want to find some of the multi color that weezingreens has! That will be my next endeavor.

Wow, I love that, Mel! What a great ground cover. I need to go out and dig up more grass to make room for groundcover. :-)
I just told silverfluter yesterday (they stopped for a visit) that I wish I could take all of the grass up and put sedum and iceplant in! Ooooooohhhhh... No Mow!
Baby Sunrose, Heartleaf Ice Plant 'Red Apple' is a good one also.

I can't wait until I have full sun so I can plant all of these Ice Plant Cultivars! This has been a great thread and should continue to be a good reference for people looking for good full sun border plants for Texas.
Hazel, I don't think that link will work with the single quote!
John
I will add to this thread honorable mention for periwinkle aka Madagascar periwinkle. Low growing, blooms its heart out from spring to first frost, loves full sun and heat and is drought tolerant. Also is very neat--spent petals just blow away and don't need to be dead headed. It is an annual and re-seeds itself, but the seedlings are slow to get up and bloom. I prefer to kick start with a couple flats of blooming plants, which spread rather quickly.
TXMel, Which sedum and ice plant?
John
I have 3 different sedums, but my favorite was a stowaway in some monkey grass 8 yrs ago... from my father in law.... I have no idea which one it is, but It grows like crazy! Even has little yellow flowers on it right now! I could mail you some!
The ice plant is Hardy Ice Plant, Delosperma Cooperii -"plain" hot pink.

did you see the picture above of the ice plant? I just moved some more around this weekend. I will get this place covered with it!
I put some yellow ice plant in last fall, but it has not come back. I am on a mission to collect every one of the colors. Love the stuff!
John, thanks for telling me the link didn't work ( Ifixed it). I need to preview the posts first before I send them ... but, sometimes I kinda become a bit lazy. Here it is again:

The link doesn'i work for me. You might try getting an id of that sedum over in the Identification Forum They are pretty good!
htop- just FYI- that second link you posted did work for me!
Texmel, We went to Weston Gardens on our way home (in Ft. Worth) and across the street from them there was a commercial garden that was open to the public (don't remember the name). It was really neat because nearly everything they had planted, which was quite alot, was labelled. The sedum you gave me was there. They called sedum brevifolia. They had some fountains, but their waterfalls, stream and pond were the most interesting to us. But tell your DH that they were not as good as yours.LOL
Yep, it does but, TXMel's doesn't! ;-)
Silver... yes Weston Gardens is a favorite of ours! The display gardens across the street is THEIRS. That is where they have all of their seminars, gatherings and events. We just went to one in March, and always go for Mothers day, easter, my birthday, and every wonderful weekend we can get away! Randy Weston (owner) is very well known, and has been published many times. You can see him on Paul James show on HGTV sometimes too.
Thanks. We love their pond, too. Can't you see some similarities in our ponds...? :~)
Thanks! Someone was just asking about my Sedum. I will log that name. John, was that you?
Mel
I'm sorry, copied that wrong. Here is the link to the Ice Plant that I have:

Melanie
Yes! I will return in the am to read the link and email my addy!
Here is a link to a sedum that looks like mine! I could not find the sedum brevifolia that Silverfluter saw at Westons, but this looks exactly like mine, summer and winter. See the yellow blooms. Htop has a pic on there ! She must have some too.

So, it looks to be Sedum Sarmentosum.
Mel
They are both great! You will have mail shortly.

Yes, thanks Terri, I have 6 or 7 new finds on their way too!
Mel
That's a wonderful website. You can shop for your garden and entertain yourself at the same time.LOL Thanks for posting that.
Your welcome!
Texmel, Now that you mention it, yes the waterfalls and streams at Weston did remind me of yours. After I read your post I remembered standing there looking at their stream and thinking "Hmmmmm, this feels just like deja-vu. Where have I seen this before?" LOL
