Impulse buying.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I am so bad. I went on a hunt yesterday looking for a specific plant, Thunbergia alata ‘Apricot Smoothie’. My destination goal was Yardbirds in Martinez who might have had my much desired plant. Well, I never made it to Martinez and never saw a Thunbergia alata ‘Apricot Smoothie’. But I did get a car full of plants from all my stops on the way. So I guess I have to go back out today. LOL

I personally am not seeing the problem, I think you are in excellent shape! You managed to extend one day of plant buying into two. You rock. LOL

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Oh, my God. Is there anything more exciting than a car full of plants, waiting to be unloaded? Gorgeous hibiscus! What's the yellow thingie that looks like a trumpet vine? And what's that big blue ball of stuff in the upper left-hand corner? Oh, you make me want to go out shopping right away!

Rotterdam, NY(Zone 5b)

LOL Zuzu! Me too....I love it...shopping for plants even when I have no room to plant...LOL however there is ALWAYS room...just have to make it LOL Awesome selection Kell...are they planted yet? I know sometimes my plants will sit in containers for a couple of days...well weeks sometimes before I plant them...I know it's not a good practice...but like I said...I have to make room LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Again!! Yes you are right Pudgymudpies, LOL, I did manage to go nursery hopping for 2 days. LOL.

I haven't planted everything, but I am making a dent. Unfortunately, I have bought about 4 carloads in the last couple of weeks. I am on a mission it seems, a go broke mission. I have been going nuts over abutilons! I wish it would stop raining. I can't remember the last time we had so much rain so late.

Zuzu, the ar back purple one is a double impatiens. And the yellow one is a Allamanda. I wll have to go look which one.

Thanks, Kell, for the ID's. This rain is hideous! It's the first Mother's Day I can remember with rain. I always go out for brunch on Mother's Day and I remember a light shower one year, but that's all.

My shopping coup this week was at Vintage Gardens. I lost custody of my Smoky rose in a divorce in 1971 and never found another Smoky. I've looked for it on and off since then, and I periodically google it to see if anyone has it. The latest google turned one up, and it was right down the road (walking distance!!!!) at Vintage Gardens. I bought two--one for me and one for the gophers.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

OK Kell, I need to shop behind you, again! Where are you finding more abutilons, especially the smaller size varieties and the bellas?
Your car looks like the back of mine a few times last week! Now if this rain would just let up I can plant.
Went to Annie's on the Sat. for their Mother's Day special event, also to pick up plants for my brother. His house warming gift was a day of planting his new garden that day complete with plants my Mom & I helped pick out. (My muscles now ache where I didn't know I can ache!)
This is my most exciting find at Annie's, it will go in a large pot. Their specimens there were absolutely awesome!

Oh NO! Your link did not work. What did you get??? I haven't been to Annies for a long time.

I haven't really found any more abutilons, Sue. I did get a 5 gallon one called Belle (not Bella but looks like Bella, but the tag said it will get to 6ft) at HD off Auto Park. They had about 10 last week. I am busy planting them in pots with matching coleus. LOL My latest thrill.

Do you believe this rain Zuzu? I was supposed to plant all weekend. And the rain keeps coming. My roses are all full of black spot. Good for you finding that rose. I have never heard of losing a rose in a divorce. LOL. So now I just have to see what a Smokey rose looks like. LOL

Look how big these Belles are.

Fuchsia boliviana 'Alba'.
Weird that I couldn't get the actual link to work but I changed the link to the list and it's at the bottom. Very tropical/exotic looking!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Yes very exotic. I would love a close up of the leaves. They sound so pretty. Funny, I planted a fuchsia that is similar 2 years ago. Let me warn you, plant it where there is lots of room. It is huge now. I just took a picture the other day to post to ask if the flowers looked normal. They are very odd. I was expecting a much bigger bloom. maybe they are normal for this plant. LOL

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Wow, Sue. That fuchsia is worth a trip to Annie's. How much did it cost there? About $5, right? On the Website it's $8.00, and after you add the $2 for handling and the shipping, the difference almost pays for the gas to get to Richmond. Of course, every time I go there I fill up two flats lickety-split, so it doesn't really save money at all. My goddaughter owes me a Mother's Day gift. A trip to Annie's should do the trick nicely.

Kell, it wasn't really a custody case. It was one of those divorces where you run away in the dark of night, leaving all your plants and most of your other belongings behind. One of my students drove over there the next night to rescue my cat. Luckily, he was sitting in the middle of the street and was easy to kidnap.

Smoky has been described as either the ugliest rose you've ever seen or the most magnificent. It's sort of a maroonish-gray, if you can imagine that. I think it's stunning.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I did a search and no luck. You will just have to post a picture when your 2 bloom!!

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Zuzu, all annuals are $3, perennials $4 and rare's $5 so that was $4.
I will be heading to the Norcal pottery outlet in the near future for a very large pot so I can control the right area to place it considering it needs mostly a shaded area.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Oh, yes. I've read the postings about the Norcal pottery outlet with great longing. I'm not sure my goddaughter feels indebted enough to me to combine the trip to Annie's with a trip to Norcal, although they are in the same general vicinity. Sometimes I really wish I still lived in Piedmont, but then I'd probably be jonesing for a trip to Sonoma Horticultural.

I just assumed your fuchsia was a "rare" because it's so magnificent.

Berkeley, CA(Zone 10a)

Hi Everyone
I am new to DG but when I saw that car load of plants I had to post!!! Yay for conspicuous consumption!
I bet my husband he couldn't last a week without an impulse plant buy and he didn't last one day!Granted I had kept East Bay nursery a secret from him,but he keeps buying these cute little plants that when i research are enormous bushes we don't have room for! ack! ONLY I am allowed to impulse buy!!!
Nice to be here..
Annie

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi Annie,
Welcome to Daves! Funny how we gardeners can be so drawn to a picture of a load of plants, isn't it? LOL Our heart rate actually increases. :~)

Glad to meet you,
Donna

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

WELCOME Annie to Daves. So your DH shares your passion? In many ways I am so glad my husband doesn't, what if he had different plant addictions?? In our limited yard, it would be a fight till the death. Not to mention, I do not think we could afford 2 of us. LOL.

I love Berkeley. I was there over the weekend, went to Berkeley Bowl for oysters. I just love the feel of Berkeley and all the old yards. I almost stopped in front of a few and took pictures. I like the over crowed crazy yards where the plants are just spilling out onto the sidewalks. They all seem to have a huge yellow brugmansia at the entrance to the chaos, blooming its head off.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Annie...welcome to Daves! You are not the Annie from Annies Annuals are you? I had to ask!

I have never been to Berkeley and I have lived in CA. for 30 years! Sounds like I am missing somethihg!

Margie

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

You are Margie, there are 3 good nurseries I want to vsit there plus the UC Berkeley Botanical garden is worth a visit.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Want to plan a trip Sue? I'll chip in for gas...

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I'm game, I have the maps all printed out for all 3 nurseries: East Bay Nursery, Magic Gardens Nursery and Berkeley Horticultural Nursery. We can even wind it up at Annie's if we have time and room!

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

We can talk about it this week-end at Regional!! Great !!!

Berkeley, CA(Zone 10a)

Hi Everyone! Thanks for the lovely welcome!
Gee Kell, have you been spying on the hub and I ? We have been wrestling over cubic inches! I usually dislike his plant choices and he tolerates mine!
You described Berkeley so perfectly with the old houses and "lookn as if they just don't care"
carefully planted gardens.
DRUMROLL>>>>>>SURPRISE !!!
I am NOT Annie of Annies Annuals though I have probably paid for her children's college tuitions with my truckloads of impulse buys made over the years.(see leading thread pic) PictureLady,The rose garden is lovely too, and so are the radical old couples with pot bellys and grey hair(see pic) ;-)
Great to get to know you guys and sorry if i disappoint not being THE Annie.
A.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Nope...Annie...I am not disappointed at all...kind of relieved I guess...she would have been so far ahead of me in plant care...

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Annie of Annie's is a real neat lady, a down to earth person that loves to share her recomendations. When we were there last month mid week, it was pretty quiet there and she was there. My Mom said "Oh I just have to give you a hug, you are my hero!"
But welcome Annie of Berkeley!

Berkeley, CA(Zone 10a)

wow California Sue...i love that your mom hugged her! !
geeze is that her on the website ? Pretty,Smart, successful, AND nice..my hero too...
I better avoid that particular nursery due to a problem with the above mentioned buying syndrome...

Corte Madera, CA

cool thread, kell! let's play "whose truckload of goodies is that?"

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Annapet.

I haven't been to Annies this year and since I have no room I best not go. LOL.

I feel you pain Annie. People outside of California have no idea how small our yards are. i see their pictures of acres and I am so lustful. 2 gardeners with different tastes would be tough to satifsfy here.

Berkeley, CA(Zone 10a)

Hi Kell and All
Happy memorial day ! OR at least wishing you a PEACEFUL memorial day...
good thing the nursery's are closed today.....or are they???
I guess you guys inspired me...went to Annies last week for the first time this year..bought a tiny weenie mini brug (my first! inspired by the Brug freaks at DG
http://www.anniesannuals.com/signs/list/parent_redirect.htm

and two flats of linaria
http://www.anniesannuals.com/signs/list/parent_redirect.htm

My hub bought a plant the size of a dime ..oh so cute...turns out it is Coreopsis gigantea...shouldn't the name be a give away???
Now for the pots.....Nor cal...here I (we) come!
Annie

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

Sounds like some pretty fun places to shop. Kell your car looked like mine a few weeks ago, getting ready for that Garden Tour with all the rain we had, I didn't have much color happening so Annuals to the rescue! I bought about 8 different flats of common stuff with lots of color, I was so tired of digging holes! I still have a few six pacs of stuff that didn't get planted.
I'm one of the lucky CA folks, I have 4 acres. Creek, Shade gardens, Pond, Lots of trails all over the place. My DH likes a nice yard but he only does the grunt work, & he'll (over) water for me if I'm gone, & will weed eat off my weeds (& plants, he says they all look the same) but that's the extent of his gardening. One of these days I'm gonna make it down there. Bj

West Hills, CA

Yea

Buying is all the fun....sometimes they dont all make it in the ground though and then you feel guilty...

I control myself now and never buy more than I can plant

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

So many plant addicts, so little time!!!! I bought so much at Annie's on Saturday, met her, had a good time, went with another DG'r, teehee, you know what that means, you talk each other into buying more and more, LOL LOL, such fun,
anytime you guys want to get together for some fun buying pots and/or pots, I"M READY!!!!!!
I still have to finish planting those huge ones I bought, but I can always crowd my yardens some more!!!!
Annie
