We have a terrace that faces south, which becomes far too hot during midsummer. I'd love to have ideas on a tree I can plant nearby to provide shade and pleasure.
The soil is heavy clay (concrete in summer). I regret to say I still haven't tested for pH, but, from the plants already thriving, doesn't seem to be strongly acid or alkaline. We are in SW France.
Being south facing, the site gets very hot sun through the summer time. It can also get high winds in the summer thunderstorms which blow up occasionally, so brittle stems aren't suitable.
I'd be very grateful for any ideas for something preferably spreading and not too tall, flowers/scent or other attractive features welcome.
