This flower is so hard to take a picture of

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

But I love it. It froze at Christmas, started growing as soon as the sun came back out and has been blooming for over a month. The seedlings bloom the first year too.
I just wish I could get the true color of the flowers to show up, they are so dark they look black from a distance.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Knoxville, TN

Oh, is that my Hibiscus, Susie????

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

CC, I will send you some of this weather! It was 95 today with wind(you have to take the wind too).
Mel, do you want one? I have some seeds started.
Vossner, yes, it's H. acetosella. I love it in the gardens.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Susie try putting your hand behind the flower, get focused and hold it until you move your hand, then snap it real quick. Your camera is trying to focus on the folage. I have that happen all the time when it is a small flower.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Great looking color, this is a hardy Hibiscus?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

So these will or won't bloom in a season? LOL I have longed after these for years. I grew some about 8 years ago but not since. I started a bunch of seeds again this year. If they are 3-4" high right now, do I have any chance??

The color is vivid Susie!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Donna, thank you so much! I will try that. I had no idea why the camera wouldn't focus.
Chele, mine that were planted in January are over a foot tall and have been blooming for a while. I can't remember how long they take to flower from seed, but this last bunch of seedlings I'll try to pay attention to how long they take.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I have some seedlings started in Jan. and they are only about 8" tall and I wouldn't dream of seeing flowers. also, I mailed one to a buddy and it got there DOA.

Cala, what is your experience shipping these?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Ack! I don't think I started them until March. Hope they can take a cooler winter. LOL

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I need to go to the Hibiscus form to ask my questions, sorry Dave and Terry.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

they die in winter where it freezes. Have to take cuttings which root very easily in water on in a pot of dirt kept in water.

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

Suz, I love that one too, it is Hibiscus acetosella'Red Sheild' like vossner stated.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Donna, now I know why I had trouble rooting them. I had the cuttings too dry.
It took the freeze at Chrismas covered with straw, lost about two thirds of it's upper growth but recovered quickly.
Vossner, I haven't shipped any. Mel wants one, so I guess we will see how they travel.
Is there a variety that has pinker flowers? Some of the photos in the database are more pink.

MD &, VA(Zone 7b)

Nice! I sowed a bunch of seeds about a month ago! Hope I gets some flowers this year.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

So I can root the big sucker I have????

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

yes you can CC, as big a piece as you want. This plant like damp conditions and full sun for maximum growth

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I know just where I'll put it...
gunna try to root it.....
thanks!

Wichita, KS

Beautiful!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I went back out to check my seedlings, I know they didn't come up till after Christmas because I only had the one big plant. The second batch of seedlings is a foot or so tall and they have buds. We've are in the 70-80's all the time though, maybe it's the warmth. They are also against a wood fence, southwest side, the warmest corner of the garden.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

You had a three month jump and yours are a foot tall? You are killing me! LOL

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Michele, everything grows bigger in Texas! I told them if they didn't grow fast and bloom I would feed them to the gator.
The seedlings that are blooming and budded were direct sown in the ground, the worst part is the germination was slow and not very good(about 10% or less). The ones I sowed in a pot came up fast and almost 100% germination.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

So do I move to TX or just send my plants to grow bigger? LOL

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Maybe I could send you a little Texas dirt, you could sprinkle it around so they would think they were in TX.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Yeah, and then they would realize we had record breaking cold last night, for this time of year and they would spit on your dirt! LOL

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

You were cold last night? Did it freeze?
Here is a picture of one of the oldest seedlings. I'm still working on this garden, so don't laugh.

Here is another seedling that is the same age as the one above, the parent plant is on the right, seedling on the left.

Can someone tell me what is wrong with this one? It is pale.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

It crossed with a Heuchera? LOL

You know I always tell people what a sweet and nice person you are, then I look on here at you being a nasty tease! I might have to change my opinion. hahahaha

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Well, I was nice. I started to say we had a cold front come thru too, it was 59, I almost froze to death. I had to change from my shorts to long pants and put on my shoes, but I was nice and didn't say that.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL 59 is your cold front? hahahahaha We had a frost warning last night!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Oh but it was horrible Chele, I was cold. I had my fuzzy slippers and big fuzzy bathrobe. I even thought about fixing a cup of hot tea.
My poor little parakeet got chilled, I had to bring him in the house(he's old, he is 8). He looks better today. Poor Bleu, his nose was cold. He had to have a blanket to sleep.
Seriously though, did your stuff do okay? You didn't have frost did ya? Bill said it was snowing up in Virginia the other day. Very weird weather this year.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Chele, no one will mind if you bop her one. LOL

Knoxville, TN

WELLLLL Susie, So much for you being nice! Fuzzy slippers and Blues cold nose? I checked with the nice police and they gave me permission to say:
BITE ME!"

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Cala, ignore those people teasing. 50 degree cold front in Richmond. It was horrible, I tell, horrible!!!! We suffer and the just don't understand...

I feel your pain--bundled in a fuzzy bathrobe in May! Horrors LOL LOL

Cala, are the hib. acetosella in the shade? can't tell from pix

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Lily, we got snow at Christmas, first time in a hundred years! Now I was really cold that day, brrrrrrr, I had to get out a jacket and gloves.
Mel, Bleu was pitiful, his wittle nose was cold. He was shivering. I'm gonna tell him you said mean things and he won't let you near the flowers when you come visit!
Kell, I thought you were my bud, just because I killed your brug ya don't have to let Chele bop me on the head.(now I have that little bunny foo foo song in my head)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

ROTFLOL Poor Nery and Susie freezing in Texas! LOL I think 50 is our HIGH for the day. I just took down 3 arbors and didn't even break a sweat. I run out to my gh in the monings, unplug the heater and plug in the fan. Then I have to run back out at night and reverse them!

Susie, please report to my house so you can be properly bopped!! Stick the bird in your pocket. :)

Mel, the nice police?? LOL

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)
