Yes....I have had them and they die off . In the hosta world, white seedlings are refered to as the "lethal white"! Let me know if yours survives, I'd be interested to find out!

Thanks,

I just discovered a Christmas fern volunteer seedling in my garden - and it is all white! Ferns love to self-sow around here, and I've never seen a white one before. Any one have any ideas what causes a seedling to be white? no chlorophyll for photosynthesis?

Unfortunatly Marie I have had a few of the white seedlings and they did eventually die. Some take forever to give it up. Usually they just sit there and do nothing for weeks, with little to no growth, then the stems turns brown and they just fall over...........
I hope you have better luck.........as they say "Theres a first time for everything".........
I did notice on my Umi seedlings the leaves were an olive green with red veins in them.........wonder whats up with that?

White in foliage means no chlorophyll. The white could be a genetic change or it could be caused by a virus. At any rate, If the plant or seedling doesn't have chlorophyll it can't photosynthesize. When the seedling uses up all the energy contained in the seed, it dies. :-(
