I know this may be a regular occurence to some people but we had a power cut early this morning, kinda freaked me and my bf out to realise how much we rely on electricity. The stupid burglar alarm went off too, probably woke the whole neighbourhood... runs on a battery.
It was only off for about 25 mins or so, and seemed like it was the whole area, no lights for miles, but when it's dark its kinda scary, kept falling over the cats n stuff ! haha
Anyone out there got any funny stories about power cuts?
Power cuts
When my hubby and I were first married, we rented an apartment in a large victorian house. We had no air conditioning and it was a miserably hot and humid summer. Finally, we broke down and bought a nice window a/c, brought it home, and put it in. We'd had it on for less than an hour when a thunderstorm shook through town and knocked out the power in our neighborhood! Our friends came over and we all sat on the porch; we watched the utility company attempt to fix the transformer, groaning aloud when the first truck had to be replaced when its winch broke. We cast baleful glances toward the silent machine in our window. But, aside from being devoured by mosquitos, we made the best of it and talked by candlelight well into the night. Seems like yesterday!

hehe...seems the way, as soon as the telly and pc go down and the lights go off people have to make the best of it. i rely far too much on the telly and pc to keep me entertained. I remember at my mam's pub the fa cup final was on the telly for the lads and we had a storm and lightning cut the electricty, there was absolute mayhem! Apart from anything the beer pumps didn't work either!! haha
One time our power went out on a hot, sticky August night so we had no air conditioning in the bedroom. I decided to do what we always did when I was a kid and it was too hot at night - sleep outside. Much to my surprise, my hubby (who loves to camp, by the way) refused to join me - he was not sleeping outside without a tent, no way! I got a good night's sleep while he was miserable in the house where he was safe from bugs and critters and things that go bump in the dark - LOL.
On St. Patricks day when my kids were young we fixed a Green meal...Green Spegetti noodles and spegetti sauce with meat. My daughter added green food cloring to the sauce which made the meat look greenish irradescent like flies! No one would eat it because it looked so awful! Well we had a power outage about half an hour later and as soon as the lights went out and they couldn't see it I served dinner again and they finished off the whole pot!
mmmm sounds delish, green meatballs hehe

Zanymuse, that is too funny. Had 4 kids, and I can see it's entirely true!!!! LOL!!!
When we built our house 7 years ago, my dh requested the electrician wire a special circuit breaker to allow the house to be run on a generator (the survivalist in him). I'm sure the electrician and contractor thought he was nuts. On Oct 25, 1997 (my dd's 16th birthday), it started snowing. We woke up the next a.m. to what looked like a war zone. That fall had been unusually warm and we had not yet had a hard freeze so many of the trees were still full of leaves. We had 12 inches of heavy wet snow and broke off many trees. These trees fell on electrical wires. Anyway we were without electricity for 5 days. However, we had electricity since we had a generator. People would drive by at night and see lights in our house and would call us and ask "what's the deal?" Dh would reply - well if you would pay your electricity bill? or we just have a special "in" with the electric company. He even called the electrician and contractor and rubbed it in to them and asked if they had electricity. It wasn't that cold out at the time but it was nice to keep a freezer full of meat from spoiling and being able to take a hot shower at night.
hehe what did they say when they came by and u told them that, must have been funny to see their faces!
'we just have a special "in" with the electric company'
