Question about Asiatic Lilies - Maybe I'm just going crazy..

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Last fall I know I planted 3 Lollypops and 5 Magentos, that's all there was per bag....but now that they are coming up, there are 4 Lollypops and 7 Magentos and with the Magento, I know I didn't plant one because I came up right under my soaker hose! I'm not talking about extras coming up right beside another stem like with my orientals, these are at least 3-4" apart.

This is my first year with Asiatics, do they multiply that fast or has the Lilie Fairy been playing in my garden?

Vicki

Edited to add: So far these are the only 2 Asiatics that have done this.

They do multiply fast. Some of them send underground runners to nearby places, so it is not impossible.

Thanks! I almost want to go digging around down there to see what's going on. I just didn't know what to think because Sunday there were 5 and today 7....ah well, that's ones of the great things about gardening, you never stop learning and after all, who can complain about more lilies : )

The more, the better.
As I know,a certain kind of lily bulbs can be made into hearty salad and served on table in some luxurious restaurants.
Have a look-up to see if yours are edible. :)

Maybe that's what I can tell my husband when he askes why I'm planting so many lilies - "they're food dear" : )

The Lollypop ones are really fast multipliers. You may not get blooms from all the little ones this year, but will have a god clumpin just 2 or 3 years. At that point, I usually divide them because the bulbs are getting smaller and need more room.

Thanks Susan! I'm glad I had left them room to spread instead of crowding them, I never expected them to multiply that fast!

Some lilies will create offsets very close to the mother bulb but then grow a flexible stem and appear quite a distance away. I found this in particular of lilies related to "Grand Paradiso". Here is an example:

Hmmm, maybe I'll go scratch around a little and see what I can find : ) The extra ones are a little smaller than the ones I thought I planted, so I bet that's what's going on!
Thanks!

Sadie,

Dont go digging. Keep your hands firmly behind your back. You might break off some underground sprouts if you go investigating...

Name of the game is patience, patience. Mantra My hands are firmly behind my back. My hands are firmly behind my back.

Ok : ) I was busy picking up rocks from my new bed site and didn't have time to do any harm tonight, thank goodness!!
