I've been a little busy, lately

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

That is good news. Now, let's hope they don't start developing good taste in music.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Gretchen ever thought about planting them a corn crop in a small part of the pasture where ever they are coming out of the woods from. That wouldn't be expensive.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Thanks, Shirley -- let's hope not!

Donna -- that's a great idea, but I fear that the corn wouldn't have a chance to even get beyond seedling size before it would be devoured...the other problem would be irrigating it in dry times. For now I'm going to rely on the radio and the Liquid Fence.

I have worked on potted plants all day today. Begonias, bananas, euphorbias, schlumbergeras and a few other miscellaneous tropicals all needed to be re-potted in bigger pots. I had planned to take a couple of hours and then mow... I couldn't believe what time it was when I came in, and I started at 8:00 am! Where do my days go????????????????????

Needless to say, I didn't get anything mowed, nor have I cleaned my house. Those two things I really wanted to get accomplished today. Hopefully tomorrow :)

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Gretchen hi! I know how times flys...today went by so fast. I've not planted my brugs out but this year will be my first. You have inspired me :) Tomorrow the tractor comes out with the auger (sp?) to drill holes for their new homes in the earth.

Thanks for all your inspiration!

Jules, Looking great!! You are going to have a beautiful brug row this year!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Looks wonderful, Julie!!! Will they get full sun, all day??? If so, I'll look forward to seeing how they do, we are in the same zone, ya know...

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Thanks sweetie, I sure hope so...If it weren't for the ummm tractor drilling the holes with the 'auger' (sp?) lol I can't spell that Argh, then I probably wouldnt be planting them there...he isn't real thrilled with digging LOL....I'm gonna have to work on the holes with some good soil mixed in.

I just wanted to show Gretchen what she inspired me to do. There is no way to get a flower bed over there or I'd never be in my house doing anything...I'd live in that yard!..I think once they go into bloom...Sunray has dropped from her calyx..sorry ya'll I can not spell lol. I'm excited about that. I'll take pics promise...

:-)

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

It's going to be beautiful!!! Both of you!!

Judy

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

What's the matter, Julie, can't you handle that shovel? LOL The auger comes in handy especially when the ground is so hard. My neighbors field that I'm planting is terrible, the top two or three inches are okay, then you hit cement. LOL I'm having to add a lot of mushroom compost, cow manure and bark soil conditioner. Just think how it's going to be to dig them up this fall. LOL

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Ada, your neighbors are surely fortunate! I hope they know how lucky they are...

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Gretchen and rest of you, this has been very interesting reading. I haven't spent a lot of time with the computer lately, but today was very warm and i felt I needed to sit down . So I enjoyed all of your posts. Gretchen I sure don't know how you accomplish so much. Your brugs will be beautiful. Hope you can keep the deer out. Best wishes. DonnaS

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Thanks, Sherry or they may want to move me out for all the mess I have behind my house and garage. LOL Pots, both full and empty and a thousand plants.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Gosh, Ada, I thought everyone had a garden mess behind their house and garage, lol!!!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

But not as bad as mine, Sherry. LOL

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

I'll get a shot and show you what a mess looks like LOL...I have the same thing as you Sherry & Ada LOL!!! A mess but ohhhhhhhhhhh such a wonderful mess and soooooooo much fun lol...until I have to clean it up. My back porch is finally clearing out as I move out to the yard.

Thank you Judy! I hope so, all this work it better be lol...

Ada, LOL no I can't handle a shovel...well, not at this point anyway. I just took a fall off my porch when I rocked back just once and the darned leg on the back side of it rotted off! Off the porch I went, sideways, landing on my side hip, knocking my head sideways kinda jarred my neck and shoulders so....the 'auger' is the answer LOLOL! I just want these in the ground. I've got to do the same and work some other nutrients into my soil as well. You can get but so far in the ground then you hit clay...we'll see this afternoon when we start!

Still have to get the others off the porch and put out on the other side of the property. I found I had the starting of SB on one of my seedlings I was growing out. It has the dreaded dark circle around the what appears to be cracking in the stem. It's a year old this year. (insig. Pink x Becca Lynn)
It was a pretty white last year and grew up to 8+ feet tall. But off to the burn pile this evening!

Ruth I don't know how Gretchen does it either but she does it so good!! Everything she touches is like magic :)

That row of brugs should be really pretty in a couple of months. Looks like you have a lot of lawn to mow. Wish it would warm up so I could get mine done.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Thank you Shirley, I do hope so, and yes there is alot of lawn to mow! Thank God somebody invented the riding mower and a weed whacker hehehe. I can do the mowing...it gives me time to vent sometimes. I do hope you can get out and enjoy the weather soon Shirley. Watch what you wish for, seems like just when you get it mowed...it's time to do it again way too soon! lol And the ants are busy making mounds everywhere. Gotta get some ant killer cos' these things are so determined to live everywhere in my yard. Grrrrrrrrrrrr

Hugs

Julie -- its going to be gorgeous! I can't wait to see it all in bloom! Is that your driveway or the public road? We have an auger too, but I'd be kidding myself to even ask my DH to drill holes for plants... I have to do it Ada's way, with a plain old shovel. You are blessed to have help! How are you going to water them? Do you get enough rainfall that they'll be okay without supplemental water? It really will be beautiful! Keep us posted!!!

Donna -- thank you...days, like today though make me almost wish I didn't have so much to take care of. I've been going non-stop since I got up this morning!

Shirley -- I sure hope it warms up soon for you!

Sherry and Ada -- I think all gardeners must have a spot where they "stash" stuff!!!

I'm tired. I cleaned the house from 7:30 am to 2 pm, then mowed, edged and did a few other ourside chores. At least I didn't have to cook dinner -- DH only wanted a sandwich -- yeah!!!

Hppy, blessed evening to all -- see you tomorrow night :)

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Hi Gretchen! They will be planted in the ground...pot-less lol! Yes, they will have to be mulched heavily this winter but thats ok. I forgot to mention I won't be digging the little one's up after planting them this summer.

I have a well that I use specifically for watering/fertilizing/ and treating my plants. I have a deep well so that will help with the water bill this year lol. DH is happy and says it's the best investment he's made yet far out here at our new place. He bought me like 4-5 hose's LOL, they stretch from one end to the next lol...!

No, that's not my driveway, That's the side of our property that runs along side a dirt drive back to someone else's house. My DH's cousin's home. This is 'Brown Hill' and everyone out here is kin LOL!

Julie, I know about injuries. LOL I fell last year and fractured my sacro then I fractured my thumb drilling holes in pots but I still dug them holes. LOL The auger helps but if you have to dig the hole wider, it would be helpful to dig three holes together and dig it out especially if you ground is as hard as what I've been digging in at my neighbors. I think it's concrete under two inches of soil. LOL

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

LOL Ada, yes I've encountered clay around in the yard, but I don't know for sure what will be over there where my plants are going to be planted. We had planned on drilling 3 holes around together for one plant just to loosen the dirt and mix in better soil just in case. The area where they are used to be farmland so if the soil is anything like the dirt in my garden for vegetables then I won't have to add too very much to it. It's pretty healthy looking soil.

Julie, the three holes together really helps when you start digging. I think the closer I get to the wooded area, the harder the soil is where I'm digging. If it gets much harder, I'll have to quit. LOL

I'm new to this and simply amazed that anyone even has so many Brug's as Gretchen, no less her photos and her property. Good grief! Do you take super vitamins girl? I need some. I'm sitting here (still in PJ's) reading all these great posts and I'm enchanted! The energy part amazes me. We have less than an acre and many separate gardens (all on paper, too, so I won't forget names, etc.) and over 1300 of our own hybridized daylilies but they don't require the work that Gretchen does! Amazing Gretchen instead of Amazing Grace! I'm so impressed.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Pirl -- its funny, you find the time and energy to do what you want to do, don't you Shirley, Julie, Ada and others? 1300 daylilies is a bunch! I sure love them, and roses, but the deer do too! So, I stick to my beautiful brugs, which all have a healthy dose of black pepper, chili powder and Liquid Fence! So far, so good!

How sweet Gretchen !!!

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

I know I can find time to do what I want to do but it's according to what my back will do for me that is the question lol!!! Most of the time, I will go the extra mile though if it's something I really want done. I feel blessed to wake up and be able to get out of bed and do anything out on God's green earth...and my backyard lol!

Awwwwwwwwwww that is adorable...when I saw your picture it reminded me of what my brother's dog drug up to the house to him. It's such a shame too, they are adorable little creatures :-( Maybe this cute little fella got ran over and my brother's dog was trying to rescue him. :-(...It made me sick...

Julie -- there have been three abandoned babies in our yard this week. None have survived. A neighbor's dog carted one off, and they've all been left by the mamas. And we have seen the mamas with their udders full to the point of being painful, I'm sure. We have tried to figure it out and the only thing we can come up with, is that they're starving. That's why they continue to desecrate my garden! We think this may be their way of reducing the herd. Very sad. We even tried to bottle feed the one in my image, but it was already too far gone. Breaks my heart, even though I can't stand them as adults!

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

This is aweful...mother's starving their young?? Oh my goodness! Breaks my heart too :-(

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Kaufman: I agree. An adult one kicked through my dog's chest and he came home, slowly, with his lung hanging out. Got him to the hospital, they operated, he died later. It's hard to admire them, as I used to long ago, after that episode.

And, Kaufman, I did hybridize those daylilies and plant them and replant them but it's not the annual work that all of you dedicated people shower on your brugs. We're using Deer Scram but the deer usually stop their morning feast at my neighbors. Praise God. We've had them visit but not stop for a meal.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Oh, that's a terrible story, Pirl! Bless your heart fo having to go through that!!! I love my dogs, so much... Glad those pests aren't feasting at your garden!

Lanny is ADORABLE!!!!!!!!

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Thank you all! She's my "baby girl". David was off fishing a few days ago, and when he's not here, she sleeps right in his spot. He didn't believe the part about her being under the covers with her head on the pillow, so I had to take the pix to prove it to him LOL!
Needless to say, he's now a believer!!!

Does Lanny get jealous when DH wants his rightful place next to you?

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Precious!!!

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Pirl -- she's so funny! Yes, she would like it if he never slept there! Sometimes she gets in-between us and puts all her weight against him, thinking she can push him out! Its really hysterical, because she adores him, but not in "her" bed! And, she does have her own beds throughout the house that she uses during the day... They are such wonderful companions.........

Sherry and Judy -- she's quite a hoot!
