Hap,want was always my middle name!!!
Who wants to grow up??
I'm already old!!!
I still think that first pic looks like Oz! LOL
The garden is looking beautiful Tman! After seeing you brave the elements, I started sticking stuff out too. I wish it would take off faster. I think you have a better zone 6 than I do. LOL It really looks awesome!
The garden is looking really nice. Can't wait to see it when everything is blooming.
Tropicman,
You're really WOW'n them in Wichita........ I just now got my tropicals put out ...... I'm encouraged by all your hard work and wonderful results......... Hope my attempt at the Tropics in Kansas isn't a total bust because I'm truly envious of you and Rootdoctor's yards........
Thanks guys!
Chele,I forgot to put down plastic over my planting beds,a couple weeks before planting my tropicals, and things aren't going as good as I would like them to be,all because I didn't warm the soil up first. But getting them out a few weeks early toughen the plants up somewhat, they even went thru some light frost, and some burnt leaves, but I think that makes them want to grow and branch out more as if I had pruned them.
HG,I can hardly wait myself,I did a little fertilizing tonite, just to help the flowering .
I too am envious of roots yard,he does such a great job!!!
The trick is to get them adapted to the soil and water and feed, and make them grow in 6months,what would be a lifetime in there natural habitat.
*grin* I opened up three of your pictures in separate windows so I could make your garden grow through the magic of photos. Quite fun!
I don't know how much effort this garden takes you, Tropicman, but it's more than worth it. BEAUTIUFL!
WoW.....
Fabulous Don!
I loved seeing your yard last year.So I'm really looking forward to watching it grow again this year!! Your yard looks like a zone 10 yard!!
Bonnie
LOL! Love it,I still say I am coming down to kick back with you! This may be the summer, you sure have a great jump on it.
Wow! Look at that garden grow! Fabulous, Don. You sure have two very green thumbs. I hope you and your family are well.
Thanks everyone, with all the rain we had in June, and now temperatures
in the 90's,things are growing faster than I could ever imagine.
Can't hardly wait to see Julys August,Septembers pictures!!!
Downside, the mosquitos are driving me crazy!!!!
When I was a smoker they didn't ever bother me,now 11 years without a smoke they attack like a kitty to catmint !!1LOL
I know what you mean tropicman about the smoking. It has been 9 years since I quit. I use a lot of Avon Skin So Soft to keep the mosquitos off of me. I use the bug spray with Deet during the day while outside working, but after I come in and shower I don't want to put on the bug spray, so I use the skin so soft. It really works.
Linda
Will have to get some, can't stand those pesky critters, especially when they buzz around my ears.
Holy cow! Now I'm seeing hog wild with tropicals in zone 6 and no longer have an excuse for holding myself back! Your garden is fantastic; I love the way you've made your yard feel like an exotic, far away place. I'm already digging lots of tender babies in the fall anyway, so why not plunge deeper into the tropicals? What temperature do you overwinter them in your greenhouse?
Thanks,Thinks are just now really starting to grow, and they will get really large before the first frost.
But this is what I do,I cut everything back about halfway, bring inside either to a garden room, sunroom or greenhouse, night time temps are around 45* to 55*,and they do just fine at these low temps, and watering is at a very minimum, but I do mist to keep the humidity up.
I compost over winter right in the flowerbeds where I'm going to plant everything, work it into the soil and cover the bed with plastic to warm the soil for a couple weeks before planting in the spring
This helps them to get off to a fast start,as soon as I see some leaf growth I start fertilizing just a little ,until I see more growth them start fertilizing full strength.
I really like experimenting with new tropicals ,so go ahead and enjoy yourself like many other northerners getting into the tropical gardening.
WoW Tropicman...... that looks so wonderful and its great to see the progress each month...... look forward to August pics....... When will you start putting plants away for the winter.... and do you wrap up your bananas and leave them out or do you dig them and store them away ..... I have a couple of bananas in my garden this year - one has gotten much bigger than I expected and I'm debating on leaving it in the ground and wrapping it up.....
Beautiful! I bet when visitors enter your back yard it's like " I don't think we're in Kansas any more"LOL! You've done a great job of creating not only a fantastic garden, but a vacation atmosphere-makes me want a margarita! Neal.
I'll start about first week in October,no I dig them up,tried several times to leave in the ground and over winter, but its to cold for too long of a time, trunk and corm both rot, best to dig up and store in basement or under crawl space of house.
Yep,sort looks like Cancun without the hurricane, altho we just had a heavy thunderstorm this morning.
Wow !! Tropicman, that looks incredible and what a difference from your first postings. I planted a small tropical area for the first time this year. I get heavy frost in the winter, so unfortunately everything has to be dug and put in the greenhouse overwinter. Otherwise, I would probably try to do the entire yard in tropical plants.
I tried to grow alot of tropicals from cuttings this year, but I had a terrible time with mealy bugs on them. I grow about 300 hoya plants in the greenhouse. I found very few mealy's on them, but they were all on my tropical's. I am not sure I want to go through that again this winter. I also overwinter quite a few brugmansia cuttings in there over the winter.
Thanks,I to plant everything in the ground and have to dig them up in the fall and overwinter in the greenhouse, mealybugs where bad for me last year also, year before it was whitefly, year before that was spidermites,no telling what this winter will bring,no bugs I hope!!!!
I love it!
