Gloriosa Lily

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

I purchased some Gloriosa Lily tubers from QVC last year and planted them in my garden rather than a pot like they suggested. Needless to say they were a failure. Took forever to sprout and only grew about 1ft. with 1 flower. The vines were very thin and wiry and seemed to lack vigor. I have oriental and asiatic lillies that do great and multiply every year.

Is anyone familiar with the Gloriosa? Should I plant them in a pot this time? I have only 4 tubers (two the same size they sent me and 2 half that size).

Thanks

Thanks to Calalily who provided some great links in an old thread from 2004. My questions were answered.

Would you share them heer, please?

I plan to grow some in the future and was hoping to read some info on them here.

Please forgive my computer ignorance but I'm still new to all this copying/pasting and hyperlink jazz. My computer wizard is snoring right now so I'll give you the websites that Calalilly googled. www.gaygardener.com and www.tesselaar.net.au

If that doesn't work I found the info in the Vines & Climbers forum in an old thread from 2004 posted by rylaff. I did a search on gloriosa lilly.

Hope this helps.

Toni

Yes, it does.

Thank you, Toni!

Thank you! I planted some in pots about a month ago. After the squirrels had a taste, they are sitting in their pots doing nothing.I will get some and try again using the info you provided.

I bought Gloriosa Lilys last year from QVC as well..they were put in pots with a trellis and only had a few hours of sun...they said they don't like too much sun and mine grew beautifully...They are just now about 2 foot tall in my pots..so give them time..they may still resurface...Hope this helps...Here is a pic of mine from last year...Jeanne

Thanks Jeanne!

I guess I did a few things wrong then. Not only did I put them in the ground but also in full sun. That was last summer and I dug out the tubers to overwinter. This year I'm putting them in a pot and I'll move it to a semi-shade area. Hopefully my lillies will look just as beautiful as yours!

Toni, mine grow in full sun here in Florida. That is a lot of sun!!!!! They all have multiple flowers and multiply like crazy in the ground.

Hi rylaff:

All of your lillies are so beautiful! Why were mine so pukey?

Both JeanneTX and you are in warm climates. Do you think maybe it's not warm enough here in Chicago? Our true warm temps don't begin until about June.

Do you use any special fertilizers? Please please tell me your secrets!

I dont fertilize at all , unless they just happen to catch some fertilizer when I am giving some to something else. Too much water, and they will rot. They dont seem to mind a little drought. Mine are in full sun, except I did put a couple in a spot that gets part sun. And they did just as well. The only thing that seem to bother them is the cold. Once the temp drops down , they tend to yellow and die. One of my neighbors decided to grow his in a pot, and they did alright, although they did not seem to multiply in the ground like mine. They like to have something to climb on.I like to have mine grow up through the azalea bushes. They cling to the azaleas and seem to get longer that way. Our soil has a lot of sand in it. Which means it drains pretty fast. Water does not sit. That seems to help.

Thank you so much for all your advice. I'm hoping my lillies will look alot better this year than they did last year! I'm going to wait for the ground to get good and warm before I put them in.

Hey rylaff...are you out there?

I took a picture of the pitiful tubers I have. Do you think they're viable? I think the bigger ones might do something but what about the little ones?

Thanks

Toni, actually they look fantastic. Not shriveled or anything. They will be fine. You have a monster one which should put up a thick stem. The smaller ones will put up smaller stems, but that is okay. I have had them as small as peas and still grew nice plants.

Oh thank you soo much!

Now can you send me a can of sunshine! LOL
