My star gazers are just pushing up through the mulch now. One plant has a smaller off-shoot growing out of the main stem at ground level. Should this smaller off-shoot be pruned away? Will it effect the main plant? Thanks.
Off-shoot on emerging lily
Aren't you lucky, that is a second stem and you want to leave it so it can grow and feed the area of the bulb it is emerging from. Eventually the bulb will divide and you will have increased your bulbs.
I noticed that I am having quite a few of these 'sideshoots' from newly planted bulbs that I put in the ground last fall...ummmm
Thanks Lilyfan! I had some experience with gladiolus and the new shoots seemed to take away from the "parent" stem. I will keep what I have and hope for more.
The offsets are very prolific in some lilies, and among the oriental lily ground, stargazer is extremely prolific. You can dig and divide the plants every 3-4 years. In that time, you should have several lilies blooming.
You're welcome Glenn
I just planted some Stargazers this spring and am looking forward to the fast increasing oriental lily.
