Is any one here from Upstate NY?

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

I usually go up there every summer, near the Swan Lake area. What are those gorgeous trees with the mounds of white flowers? Hydrangea arborescens? Snowball bush? The ones I'm talking about must be pretty old because these bushes have grown into trees.

Also, we used to go wild "blueberry" picking up there. I'm not so sure now that those were blueberries, because the plants were really tall. Does any one know the plants I'm talking about? They're the size of small to medium trees, grow in full sun and have wickedly sweet, delicious dark blue berries. What are those? Blueberries (species?) or something else?

Hi, we live in upstate NY, much further north than Swan Lake. The blueberries you are talking about are probably wild blueberries. The shrubs grow about 6-8 ft high and have small, very dark blue berries. Delicious. I'm not sure what the plant you're referring to is. When does it bloom and does it have a fragrance? Most of our hydrangeas are not tall, until the late summer/ fall paniculata ones. It could be a viburnum, especially if it has a strong fragrance. Upstate NY is beautiful in the spring and summer (actually year round). Polly

I've never been there any other time except for the summer and mostly late summer at that. I wish I could see it in the spring, maybe some day.

It blooms during the time I visit, I guess, and I don't really remember a scent... but I could be wrong.

Probably the Hydrangea Paniculata Grandiflora. They are very common here, and grow into trees, blooming in late summer. Polly

THANK YOU Polly!!! Those look like them! I'm going to go out and buy a bunch now!

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

You're welcome. If you like the size of these, I just wanted to tell you that Hydrangea Paniculata 'The Swan' can also be grown as a tree, and the flowers are just beautiful. I think a lot of the Hydrangea Paniculatas will reach almost tree size, but we have 'The Swan', and it's gorgeous. Polly

Are the "florets" the individual flowers?

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

The florets are the individual flowers, and consist of 4-5 flower petals. Are you sold? Happy gardening, Polly

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh, wow! Than those flower head have got to be super big. Lol. I'm sold!

Maybe we can set up a in person trade when I come up there in the summer.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Naw,but I had a run to Liberty for a while and I would get off the exit for swan lake,Thats how I knew it
Beautiful area down there!
Amazing how quick the rains flood stuff there though
I love the ride on 17
So scenic

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

I remember the raining from when I was younger, darting from bungalo to bungalo. Nothing to do really besides go to the movie theater, not many people had cable.

In the last few years it seems like there's been draught. The blueberries hardly produced any fruit.
