Starting Japanese morning glory seeds

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I am in zone 5a and wondering if it works better to start Japanese morning glories in the ground or in peat pots? If started in peat pots, what date would you recommend putting them out? Does it help to soak the seeds in a peroxide mixture? Thanks for any help or ideas you can offer. I have grown regular morning glory seeds, but never the Japanese ones and I would hate to lose them.

Hi Susan, with you living in zone 5 I would say it depends on weather or not want to get seed. That would depend on when you started your seed. I would start some in peat pots and then set them out. As far as how they do I don't think it really make that much of a difference. I have planted in the ground and in pots and I like the planting in the ground better just because it is easier.

As for soaking the seed some I have soaked some and some I have not. I think they come up faster if you soak them but it is not something that is necessary. I don't use any peroxide or bleach just plain water.
If you do lose some don't be to upset because you are going to lose some. When I plant mine I will keep a few back just in case I do lose a batch. SO if you are worried about losing seed and you have 5-8 seed or more, only plant about half of what you have and keep the others for back up. You will still get tons of blooms and seed off three or four vines..............
Keep us posted on how you are doing..............Best wishes...........

I nicked and soaked my seeds overnight as well. Then planted in a peat pot and misted the soil every morning and night. However, everything I know I learned from WillowWasp. Here is some inspirations, my babies are coming up nicely. Just have to decide where to place all of them.

I am in zone 9 and just got some Japanese morning glory seeds. It sounds like potting them up is the way to go...it will be the first time having them. I will check back and see how everyone is doing with them. Good luck!
