I don't know what kind of tree this is - it was here when I bought the house - but this one branch is odd -- what is going on here?

Heather, are you talking about the branch on the left side of the picture? With the larger needles?
Looks like a reversion to me.
A lot of plants that are bred to be "dwarf" try to revert back to the original parent plant. This is corrected by pruning the "offending limbs" off!
yes -- that area-- what is wierd to me is that branch looks and feels NOTHING like the rest of the tree - the rest of the needles are soft feeling, shorted and a different shape..
