Blue Dawn going outside?

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

I have a couple of blue dawn mg from Emma. I know they are perennial in some zones and I was wondering if I can move mine outside here. We are in the high 60s during the day to the mid 40s in the evening. I can bring then in if there is a chance of frost unless they are somewhat hardy. Does anyone have an idea how cold they can take it? I am running out of room!!

They freeze back to ground here (8b), only to come back in the spring, so if they were to take a hit of frost, it probably wouldn't phase them.

Are yours grown from seed, or are they cuttings? I have one strain that's sterile, and just sprouted some seeds I collected in Florida.

thanks for the info. Mine were rooted pieces. I don't know if the original parent was from seed or not. I thought they were all sterile! I'll watch for seeds.

i have one that is just now coming up outside agian. i never did take it inside. our weather is about the same as your right now so i dont think it will hurt it. but for a few days i would keep it in the shade till it got used to being outside agaian.

most of them are sterile but it takes two totally different plants to make seeds. i have seen seeds on them before but never know how mine gets that way as i dont have another one. maybe someone in my area does. but its only rarely that i do

Thanks imzadi,
Out they go! I think they will double in size in the real sun. I have 3 plants so maybe I will get some seeds to share!

I'm not so sure about the two different plants theory with mine. I collected these off a roadside fence and in a separate field, and they were loaded with seeds. The plants grow wild all along the side of the road in the Keys, and there were lots of them. I am, however going to try to cross them with my sterile plant (if it grows successfully from seed), and see if the sterile one will produce seeds. My sterile one seems to have a much sturdier vine than the wild ones.
