Thanks for all the loverly pics...I too miss the ocean, Donna. Grew up on it. And all those flowers! Biggest spring event we have so far is that the aspens have catkins. Hot diggety. Tried digging in the garden today--had a silly idea of planting my peas, which are up 4"--but it's still frozen below 3", sob.
Round-Up....The Beauty Of Victoria
Beautiful pictures Pam and Donna. Thanks for sharing them. I also especially loved the ones from Beacon Hill Park. I spent quite a bit of time there whenever I was at University. I used to love feeding the ducks and seeing the animals in the petting zoo. I always remember going there with my mom and dad when they were down visiting me once. We were walking around looking at all the lovely flowers and they were both taking little cuttings of this and that behind their backs. I was mortified but now I'm apt to do the same thing. LOL Yes, the love of plants does seem to pass along and catch up with us.
Did DD get a ride on the Double Decker bus?
Sandy
We weren't able to do it this time...with time constraints the choice came down to the DD Bus or the Ferry Taxi. We'll have something to look forward to on our next visit. Ü

What a great thread.
It was a wonderful time for me, to see Victoria through other's eyes. To see the beauty we take for granted. To see Pam's DD as she first got to touch the ocean, I bet she coud've spent all day there.
Wonderful pictures Pam and Donna.
Linda

Thanks so much for sharing your pictures. Wish I could have been there!

Thanks Ingrid.....I'm hoping someone has some pics of them. I'll check mine again as well.
You know ladies and gents, that a mighty clever lady, created the sunken gardens........when I was a courier or tour director for years, Victoria and the environs were always on the tourist's list! They would ask me what was the garden originally? A big hole, empty of Pim's rock quarry, of the Portland Cement Co. Jenny, his wife, wasn't about to have that huge hole visible for all to see...she requisitioned tons of top soil via barges from Todd Inlet to fill the hole and the rest is history....that happens to be the same method on Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver........only this hole was a quarry also, with rock paving many of Vancouvers' streets, back in time....E
It is truly amazing Elaine.......what a gift she left for everyone to enjoy!
This am I have a lady from Vancouver here on one of the Access Internet stations (she's in town for a conference). I was telling her about our trip and she said she was interested in seeing this site....she's got a new house and plants are on her have to get/grow list so maybe we will get another BC member.
Thanks for that interesting story, Elaine. You obviously would have been an invaluable source of noteworthy facts at the RU. Wished you could have been there. :)
Still catching up with threads after being away - this is a wonderful one. Thanks so much for your pics, Pam and Donna. They're really good. Pam, I decided to set your sunken garden pic as my wallpaper for a little while, for landscaping inspiration - hope you don't mind! :-) The next one will be Donna's pic of the duck pond on Beacon Hill park.
I have many happy memories of the park too. We moved to Victoria when I was 7, and left when I was 13. Mom and I spent many happy hours in the park, all year round. I just love how there are so many different types of areas in the one park.
We used to get bags of bread ends (the part left over from the slicing machine) from our neighbourhood bakery and take them down for the ducks at the park. I used to walk around dropping bread crumbs, and leading the ducks on a little stroll from one pond to the next.
I remember one time being particularly enchanted with a family of little ducklings that were on a island in the middle of one of the ponds. I wanted to give them some bread crumbs but they were out of reach... I wound up and threw the crumbs as hard as I could, and... FELL INTO THE POND! Underwater and everything. My mother was laughing so hard that an old lady who was passing by had to help me out. I can still hear my running shoes going "squish, squish" all the way home.
Thanks again for your pics - I'm still sorry to not have been able to be there, so it's mixed emotions for me, but they sure bring the feeling of Victoria right to the viewer. :-)
Shannon
Glad the photos brought back fond memories (some funny ones for us, too! :D), Shannon. It would have been wonderful for all of us to have had you there. Next time, right?
Absolutely, Donna!! I'm glad I was able to meet Linda and Cheryl so soon afterwards, at least. Wonder how long before the first RU 2006 planning thread shows up? ;-)
Couldn't ask for lovelier places to get your inspiration from Shannon. :) It is a shame that you weren't able to be there with us but I'm glad you were able to meet our wonderful hosts Linda and Cheryl. Ü
you guys are most kind.....
remember Heather and Ian...
but mostly, all you that attended, made it easy and fun.
